Sustainable, data-driven supply chains imperative to withstand trade disruptions, says Sheikh Nahayan
Smart procurement and In Country Valuation (ICV) have redirected AED 145 billion to the UAE economy since 2018
Dubai, UAE: Reaffirming the UAE's global commitment to sustainability and innovation, His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Bin Mabarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, said data-driven, resilient and sustainable supply chains are imperative to help withstand global trade risks.
Sharing his insights at the International Procurement and Supply Chain Conference (IPSC 2025) in Dubai organised by the global leader in supply chain training and consulting, Blue Ocean Corporation, Sheikh Nahayan said that supply chains must be effective and responsive to rapid change, and should continue to improve.
'We have come to realize the fragile nature of supply chains, and to appreciate that, in this globalized world, we must have supply chains that can respond to freer trade, to technological advancements, to increased automation and use of robotics, and to the forces of market economies. We fully understand that supply chains must be sustainable, resilient, secure, innovative, data and evidence-driven, and cost efficient,' he said in his key note address.
Paying tribute to the nation's leadership, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Nahayan acknowledged their visionary contributions to infrastructure development, economic resilience, and sustainable growth.
Congratulating Blue Ocean Corporation for organizing IPSC, he said that procurement systems and supply chains are susceptible to complexity and vulnerability in the face of unforeseen global circumstances and it is the collective responsibility of governments and businesses to ensure that they remain sustainable, resilient, and beneficial to society and to the wellbeing of the planet.
IPSC 2025 was held under the theme of 'Redefining Global Trade: The UAE Shaping Sustainable Supply Chains for the Future.
Regenerative Supply Chains, Local Economic Growth
Focus on carbon-negative regenerative supply chain models that even goes beyond sustainability practices are a must in the current times of trade to further reinforce circular economy, said Dr. Sathya Menon, Group CEO of Blue Ocean Corporation, at IPSC 2025.
'Regenerative supply chains are increasingly seen as a panacea for trade disruptions like higher tariffs, climate change and geopolitical bottlenecks as it focuses on local procurement leading to reduced burden on logistics and supply chain costs. Local procurement is also carbon negative as sourcing happens locally resulting in reduced carbon emissions, and also comes at lower transportation costs, in turn helping local economy thrive,' he said.
Experts at the IPSC 2025 said digitally empowered and purpose-led local procurement has become a tool of economic empowerment in communities across the world, fostering innovation and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) integration. For instance, Dubai's smart strategy through its DubaiNow app platform has unified procurement across over 40 government entities, improving efficiency, vendor experience and public spending transparency.
'Procurement has shifted to national value creation and digital excellence, fostering local supplier growth driving economic diversification and innovation partnerships,' said Nabil Sousou, Vice President & Chief Procurement Officer for Africa, Middle East, and South Asia at PepsiCo, adding that key initiative like the implementation of the In-Country Value (ICV) Program tied to procurement contracts has helped redirect AED 145 billion into the UAE economy since 2018.
IPSC 2025 brought together over 650 international delegates, including procurement experts, policymakers, and industry innovators to discuss on redefining global trade and supply chain ecosystems.
Sourav Ganguly, former Indian Cricket team Captain, and Amruta Devendra Fadnavis, renowned Indian social activist and Chairperson of the Divija Foundation, joined as Guests of Honour, bringing international spotlight to the conference and reinforcing the UAE's leadership in promoting global cooperation.
'Success isn't won alone. It is forged through teamwork and recognizing every teammate's role. Be it in sports or business, true leaders should lift others up,' said Sourav Ganguly, who is also a Board Member at the Blue Ocean Corporation.

The next edition of IPSC will be held in New Delhi. Earlier editions were in London, Mumbai, and Riyadh before Dubai.

Ministry of Economy, Dubai Police partner to strengthen cooperation
The Ministry of Economy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Dubai Police General Command to strengthen cooperation and coordination in developing compliance mechanisms for anti-money laundering (AML) and combatting the financing of terrorism (CFT) requirements. The agreement facilitates the exchange and integration of information between the two entities, thus enhancing supervisory roles within the national legislative framework. The MoU was signed on the sidelines of the fourth edition of the World Police Summit, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The agreement was signed by Safia Hashim Al Safi, Assistant Undersecretary for Commercial Control and Governance at the Ministry of Economy, and Major General Expert Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansoori, Assistant Commander-in-Chief for Criminal Investigation Affairs at Dubai Police. Safia Al Safi emphasised that the UAE has made significant strides in developing advanced strategies, policies, and legislation to combat money laundering and terrorism financing in line with the highest international standards. This has further reinforced the national economy's position as a competitive trade and business hub committed to the highest standards of integrity and transparency. He noted that the partnership with Dubai Police aligns with the Ministry's vision to enhance collaboration with federal and local entities, thereby strengthening the national framework and developing mechanisms to combat financial crimes and enhance regulatory infrastructure in accordance with relevant international standards. Safia Al Safi explained that the MoU establishes a sustainable institutional framework between the Ministry and Dubai Police to collaborate on various AML/CFT procedures within the country, including control, inspection, and monitoring of illicit activities. This partnership aims to elevate the efficiency of control and follow-up systems and serves shared objectives in combating financial crimes within the country. Dubai Police is committed to supporting national efforts to counter money laundering and combat terrorism financing by advancing its technical and human competencies. We aim to leverage Dubai Police's research, investigation, and financial analysis ecosystems to develop effective, proactive mechanisms for detecting suspicious activities and enhancing rapid responses to associated risks, in line with global best practices. This plays a role in reinforcing the UAE's position as a secure and transparent global economic hub.' He further emphasised that the collaboration marks a significant step forward in integrating national efforts and unifying resources and expertise to develop more precise and effective regulatory tools, while continuing to invest in national talent and smart technologies to build a safer and more stable environment. Counselor Salem Al Tunaiji, Director of the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Department at the Ministry of Economy, explained that the MoU provides advanced mechanisms for technical and security coordination between the Ministry and Dubai Police. This includes the exchange of data related to money laundering and terrorism financing crimes, aligning with the Ministry's role in supervising Designated Non-Financial Businesses and Professions (DNFBPs) and identifying the real beneficial owners of legal entities. Under the scope of the MoU, both parties will collaborate on developing integrated mechanisms and programs to elevate risk response efficiency related to suspicious financial activities within the DNFBP sector, which include real estate agents and brokers, traders of precious metals and stones, auditors, and company service providers. This will be realised through the exchange of data on suspicious transactions and activities and the activation of secure and effective institutional communication channels to ensure the swift exchange of confidential data in line with the approved legal and regulatory frameworks. These efforts support their awareness endeavours to prevent and deter violators, in line with the applicable legislations and regulations in the UAE. The MoU also outlines the implementation of joint training programs and specialised workshops aimed at enhancing the professional competencies of both parties' staff and the development of periodic analytical reports to support decision-making, ensuring the comprehensive application of administrative and regulatory procedures. Additionally, the MoU includes provisions to support awareness and media campaigns related to institutional compliance and financial crime prevention, as well as collaboration in developing relevant policies and legislation and reviewing regulatory frameworks to ensure their alignment with international requirements. SEWA launches 10 lighting projects in Kalba
Key projects underway Engineer Youssef Al Hammadi, Director of SEWA's Kalba Department, confirmed that the authority is executing development and lighting works according to a defined timeline, following the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah . Among the significant projects in progress is the lighting of main roads in the new industrial zone, where SEWA is installing 100 lighting poles and 200 fixtures, in addition to laying 11,000 metres of electrical cables. The project began in January 2025 and is expected to be completed by July, with an estimated cost of AED 2 million . Work is also ongoing on the second phase of Al Hefaiyah Lake lighting project, aimed at fully covering the tourist area with modern lighting units. This phase is valued at AED 1.5 million . In the second phase of the Jabal Deem lighting project, SEWA is implementing specialised technical solutions due to the area's unique geography, with a budget reaching AED 13 million . Additional work is being carried out in the Ghail area, including the installation of 400 lighting units and 250 poles, alongside 15,000 metres of electrical cables . Upgrades are also taking place on Kalba–Sharjah Road, Lake Street, and within the University District, where 1,400 traditional lights are being replaced with energy-efficient LED fixtures . The authority's lighting efforts in Kalba also include the implementation of an annual maintenance programme for the city's lighting network, as well as a dedicated project to improve lighting in the residential area of Al Qadisiya . Completed projects Several lighting projects have been completed in recent months. One of the most notable is the lighting of Khatmit Al Malaha Road, finished in April 2025, which included the installation of 100 lights, 50 poles, and 7,000 metres of cabling. Another completed project is the lighting of Saad bin Abi Waqqas Street, which saw the installation of 100 lights, 60 poles, and 10,000 metres of electric cable . These initiatives reflect SEWA's continued commitment to sustainable infrastructure development and enhanced public safety across Kalba .
