US just dept. to probe pardons issued by Biden in last days in office

Washington, June 3 (UNI) US Pardon Attorney Ed Martin informed his staff that he has been instructed to investigate the pardons issued by then-President Joe Biden during the final days of his administration, Reuters reported, citing the senior official's email. More specifically, Martin plans to investigate whether Biden "was competent and if others were exploiting him through the use of AutoPen or other methods," the report said on Monday. US President Donald Trump, along with senior officials and Republican lawmakers, has claimed that Joe Biden used an autopen to sign nearly all documents, raising questions about whether he was the sole individual with access to this device. Martin's investigation is centered on the preemptive pardons Biden granted to several family members, as well as the clemency that spared 37 federal inmates from the death penalty, converting their sentences to life in prison, according to the report. In his final days in office, Biden granted clemency to his siblings—James Biden, Frank Biden, and Valerie Biden Owens—along with their spouses, John Owens and Sara Biden. Additionally, on December 1, Biden pardoned his son, Hunter Biden, who had pleaded guilty to tax violations and was convicted on firearms-related charges. On May 18, Biden's personal office said that the 82-year-old has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has metastasized to his bones. UNI SPUTNIK GNK

AAI Unveils Mega Incentive Plan To Restart International Flights At Port Blair

Last Updated: This new scheme will be in effect for the first three years of international flight operations, a crucial period that often determines long-term sustainability. To promote international flight connectivity, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has approved a mega incentive scheme at 13 airports which includes Veer Savarkar International Airport at Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, an official said here. This scheme will be applicable for first three years of the operations to bridge the viability gap for the initial phase, which is a very crucial phase for the sustainability of operations. Speaking to PTI, Port Blair Airport Director Devender Yadav said, 'As per this scheme for the first year 100 per cent UDF (User Development Fees) which is Rs 709 per departing passenger will be waived off to the airline. For the second year, the incentive will be 85 per cent of UDF and for the third year incentive will be 65 per cent of UDF." Considering the flight load of 180 passengers, the incentive scheme has the potential of savings of Rs 128 lakh per flight for airlines, which is a significant amount to bridge the viability gap, he said. Veer Savarkar International Airport was designated as an international airport on April 1, 2007 and the first scheduled international flight was started on November 16, 2024 by AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur to Port Blair. But due to less passenger load the international operations were not viable for airlines and international flight operations were stopped from April 10, 2025. 'We have learnt a lot of lessons from the previous international flight operations by AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur to Port Blair. Now, we are better prepared for sustainable international flight operations with this incentive scheme and readiness to swing international cargo operations. I would like to thank the UT administration for jointly taking up the viability of international flight operations and achieving a significant breakthrough in it," he added. First Published:

If A Road Accident Victim Has No Insurance, Can The Family Still Get Compensation?

Last Updated: Having third-party insurance ensures if a vehicle causes injury or death, the insurance company must compensate the victim's family, even if the deceased had no insurance coverage In the event of a road accident where a family's sole breadwinner loses their life without having life insurance, the question of financial support naturally arises. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, such families may be entitled to compensation, providing a legal route for financial assistance in the absence of insurance. The Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 provides a legal framework to offer compensation to victims of road accidents or their families. This law includes two important provisions—Section 163A and Section 166—that deal with compensation claims. Section 163A of the Motor Vehicles Act allows the family of a person who dies in a road accident to claim compensation without having to prove who was at fault. Even if it is unclear who caused the accident or how it happened, compensation can still be granted. This is known as a 'no-fault claim" and is especially helpful for families, as gathering accurate details about an accident can often be difficult. On the other hand, Section 166 of the Motor Vehicles Act applies when it is clear that the accident was caused by someone else's negligence. In such cases, the victim's family can claim compensation from the vehicle owner or their insurance company, but they must prove that the other party was at fault. For example, if a truck is driven recklessly and causes a fatal accident, the family can seek compensation by proving the truck driver's negligence in court. What If The Deceased Did Not Have Insurance Even if the deceased did not have personal insurance, the family may still be eligible for compensation. In India, it is mandatory for all vehicle owners to have third-party insurance. This ensures that if their vehicle causes injury or death to someone, the insurance company is liable to compensate the victim's family—regardless of whether the deceased had any insurance coverage. Many times, the driver responsible for an accident flees the scene, and no information is available about the vehicle or the driver. Such incidents are known as hit-and-run cases. In these situations, the victim's family cannot claim compensation from any insurance company or individual, as the offender remains unidentified. To address this, the government launched the Motor Vehicles Accident Fund in 2022. Under this scheme, families of those who die in a hit-and-run accident are entitled to a compensation of Rs 2 lakh, while those who suffer serious injuries receive Rs 50,000. This initiative is especially important for low-income families or those who lack the means and resources to pursue a legal battle. It provides essential financial relief in times of crisis. Can Compensation Be Obtained Without A Lawyer? Yes, it is not mandatory to hire a lawyer to claim compensation. India has special courts called Motor Accident Claims Tribunals (MACT) that handle compensation cases related to road accidents. The victim's family can approach MACT directly to file a claim. The claim can be submitted in the district where the accident occurred or where the family resides. Importantly, if the family cannot afford legal representation, government legal aid services or certain non-governmental organisations (NGOs) offer free assistance. They help with filing the claim and managing the necessary paperwork. MACT examines the case, and if the claim is found valid, it directs the insurance company or the government to provide compensation. Watch India Pakistan Breaking News on CNN News18.
