Tuchel: England players can't shy away from criticism
Thomas Tuchel says England cannot shy away from criticism if they are to make the improvements required to win the World Cup. After Gareth Southgate called time on his eight-year reign having lost a second European Championship final, the English FA turned to German coach Tuchel in a bid to take them that last step. Tuchel's contract takes him through to the end of next summer's World Cup, where England will be among the favourites but have plenty of work to do judging by Saturday's forgettable 1-0 win against minnows Andorra. Boos from unimpressed fans greeted the half-time and final whistles in Barcelona, where the frustrated head coach spoke frankly about his unhappiness at the side's lack of "seriousness and urgency" as they "played with fire" towards the end. Asked if it was a risk being so publicly critical of the team, Tuchel responded: "What risk? You were in the stadium. What should I tell you? That we played a good match and are happy. "The risk is only that you exaggerate it and make something of it that was not there. Everything I said I said already to the team. There is no harm done. "We were not happy and no single player will be happy with what we showed today. Why would the coach be? And why would we be shy of saying so? "If we want to get better, we first need to address that we were not happy with the end of both halves." Put to Tuchel that some players can be thin-skinned, the England boss said: "I didn't name a single name. "We do this as a team. It's always a 'we' and I didn't like how the way we ended the match and the way we ended the first half. I didn't like the attitude or the energy level and how that dropped. "I liked the beginning of the team. It always includes me. Everything I say I tell the players." Tuchel feels he has a "top group" full of players whose quality and character he loves – a side that will attempt to lift the mood by heading into the summer on the back of a promising performance in Tuesday's friendly against Senegal. The visitors are ranked 19th in the world, 154 places above Andorra, and will be the toughest test since the 51-year-old took charge, but the honeymoon period could end if they play badly at the City Ground. "I always feel pressure as I am not happy with myself," Tuchel said when that was put to him. "The biggest pressure comes from myself. We have three wins and three clean sheets and we have a friendly match on Tuesday. I have felt more pressure than that." Tuchel is expecting a "good test" against Senegal and will look to balance rotation with the need to extract everything from their limited time together, saying: "We worship every training and we worship every match." Ivan Toney, called up for the first time since joining Saudi side Al-Ahli, is among those pushing to start after Ollie Watkins withdrew through injury and Harry Kane completed Saturday's win against Andorra. "We have opportunities and we will see some changes but I am not going to give you names now because I don't know the line up," Tuchel added.

Gary Breen: Heimir Hallgrimsson's Ireland are improving but they should be further down the line than they are
Manager's decision to not call up Championship players is a missed opportunity and attacking patterns need ironing out ahead of World Cup qualifiers. Today at 14:00 There seems to be a different energy around this Ireland squad, a sense that confidence is building as the World Cup qualifying campaign looms. The arrival of new, emerging players who do not have the baggage of repeated failures will bring enthusiasm and change the dynamic but Heimir Hallgrimsson and his coaching staff deserve credit for nurturing the improvement in the environment.

France defeat Germany in UEFA Nationas League play-off, Italy sack manager Luciano Spalletti
Goals from captain Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise earned France a 2-0 victory over Germany in Stuttgart to claim third place in the UEFA Nations League. Hosts of the finals, Germany were looking to bounce back from defeat in the last four against Portugal but fell behind on the stroke of half-time after Mbappe controlled and finished well to score his 50th international goal. Germany thought they had levelled through Deniz Undav early in the second half, but the VfB Stuttgart forward's finish was ruled out following a VAR review. France did, however, remain in control and should have made the result more comfortable before Mbappe squared for Olise late on to secure third spot, with Iberian neighbours Portugal and Spain facing off in the final later on Sunday. Cristiano Ronaldo's winner ensured Germany tasted defeat for the first time since last year's European Championship on Wednesday. They did start well against a France team who were beaten in a thrilling semi-final by Spain, with Florian Wirtz seeing one first-half slotted effort clip the post. Mbappe, however, made no mistake after collecting Aurelien Tchouameni's long pass. The 26-year-old now sits just one goal behind second-placed Thierry Henry in France's all-time top goalscoring charts. Undav's fine finish seemingly restored parity early in the second half, but Niclas Fuellkrug was penalised for a foul in the build-up. Had it not been for Manuel Neuer and the woodwork, France would have been out of sight long before Bayern Munich's Olise tapped home to secure victory that ends their season on a high. Meanwhile, Luciano Spalletti has been sacked as Italy head coach. The 66-year-old announced the news during his press conference ahead of Monday's World Cup qualifier against Moldova. Spalletti came under pressure after his country's campaign began with Friday evening's 3-0 defeat away to Norway. His imminent departure - after he takes charge of the Group I meeting with Moldova in Reggio Emilia - was later confirmed by the Italian Football Federation. "I spoke with (federation president Gabriele) Gravina last night and he informed me that I will be relieved of my duties as national team coach," Spalletti told a press conference, according to The Athletic. "I am disappointed: given the relationship we have, I had no intention of stepping down. Especially when things are not going well, I would have preferred to stay and do my job. "However, it is a dismissal and I have to accept it. "I have always seen this role as a service to my country and I want to facilitate the future of the national team. I think it is right to seek the best solution." Former Roma and Inter Milan coach Spalletti succeeded Euro 2020 winner Roberto Mancini as Azzurri boss in 2023 after guiding Napoli to the Serie A title. He has won only 11 of his 23 matches in charge of the national team and oversaw a last-16 exit to Switzerland at Euro 2024.
