US stocks end at records after benign inflation data

Wall Street stocks surged to fresh records on Tuesday after US data showed stable inflation despite worries over President Donald Trump's tariffs, lifting expectations for Federal Reserve interest rate cuts.
Major indices spent the entire session in positive territory, with both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq finishing at fresh records.
"We're in a bull market," said Adam Sarhan of 50 Park Investments. "The bulls are strong and getting stronger."
The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished up 1.1 percent at 44,458.
The broad-based S&P 500 also gained 1.1 percent to 6,445, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index jumped 1.4 percent to 21,681.
The consumer price index rose 2.7 percent from a year ago in July, the same rate as in June.
While "core" inflation stripping out volatile food and energy segments accelerated from the month before, analysts described the report as largely in line with expectations.
Analysts said the report confirmed expectations for a Fed interest rate cut, after the latest jobs data pointed to weakening in the labor market.
"Nothing potentially blocks the Fed from likely cutting interest rates in September though we still have one more inflation reading before that and one more jobs report," said Angelo Kourkafas, senior global investment strategist from Edward Jones.
Kourkafas said it was still likely "premature" to conclude that there would be no major inflation impact from the tariffs.
Large tech companies were generally higher with semiconductor company Micron Technology and Facebook parent Meta Platforms especially strong. Both piled on more than three percent.
Boeing jumped 2.9 percent despite reporting lower commercial plane deliveries in July compared with June. However, the figures were still above those in the year-ago period.
Intel rose 5.5 percent after CEO Lip-Bu Tan met with Trump, who praised the executive after previously calling for him to step down. (AFP)

Hang Seng Index races up amid rate cut hopes

Hang Seng Index races up amid rate cut hopes The Hang Seng Index put on 643 points, or 2.58 percent, to end trading for Wednesday at 25,613. File photo: RTHK Mainland and Hong Kong stocks rose for a third straight session on Wednesday, with the Shanghai benchmark posting its highest close in nearly four years, as prospects of a Federal Reserve interest rate cut next month lifted investor sentiment. The benchmark Hang Seng Index added 643 points, or 2.58 percent, to end trading for the day at 25,613. The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index ticked up 2.62 percent to end at 9,150 while the Hang Seng Tech Index climbed 3.52 percent to close at 5,630. Mainland stocks closed higher, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.48 percent at 3,683 and the Shenzhen Component Index 1.76 percent higher at 11,551. The combined turnover for these two indexes was 2.15 trillion yuan, up from 1.88 trillion yuan on Tuesday. Shares related to glass and non-ferrous metals led gains while stocks related to petroleum and breweries suffered major losses. The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, gained 3.62 percent to close at 2,496. Expectations have firmed for a Fed rate cut in September after the US consumer inflation report indicated the pass-through from President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs to goods prices has so far been limited. With rising expectations of a Fed rate cut, risk appetite improved and "emerging and developed equity markets resonated," analysts at Guoyuan Securities said in a note. Lifting market sentiment further, China said it would offer interest subsidies for businesses in eight consumer service sectors to support services consumption amid a slowing economy. "China retains the fiscal firepower to stimulate growth and absorb slack from reduced exports should tariffs from the US be punitive," said Vivek Bhutoria, portfolio manager for global emerging market equities at Federated Hermes. "We believe the market has been over-discounting risks in relation to Chinese equities, and even if Trump levies punitive tariffs this week, China has the ability to grow its way to prosperity and, as such, we are still positive on China."
