UKHSA unveils Britain's first priority pathogens list

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has published a list of the pathogens it believes pose the greatest risk to public health in Britain.
The list identifies 24 viral, bacterial and fungal diseases, ranging from Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) to measles, that currently lack adequate vaccines, diagnostics or treatments – leaving Britain vulnerable to future outbreaks.
The new database of 'priority pathogens' was created to 'protect the UK against infectious diseases' and prioritise investment in vaccines and other solutions, said Prof Isabel Oliver, Chief Scientific Officer at UKHSA.
Among the viruses of greatest concern are MERS, Nipah virus, and avian flu – which is currently spreading rapidly through global animal populations and has infected at least 70 people in America and one person in the UK in the last year.
The list also classifies Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM) – a rare, polio-like illness that attacks the spinal cord and causes paralysis in children – as having a 'high' pandemic and epidemic risk.
First detected in 2014, AFM has since caused sporadic cluster outbreaks among school-aged children. The virus, a type of enterovirus, spreads through respiratory droplets, similar to Covid-19, and is highly infectious.
In 2018, at least 40 confirmed cases of AFM were reported in the UK, mainly in children under 10. While some made a full recovery, others suffered permanent weakness or paralysis. No vaccines or treatments currently exist.
Several viruses carried by mosquitoes and ticks are included in the priority pathogens list, as rising temperatures create more favourable conditions for the insects to survive and spread diseases that were previously confined to tropical regions.
Among the key concerns are Zika virus, Oropouche virus, and dengue fever – the latter of which is predicted to become established in southern parts of England as soon as 2040.
'This list has been developed with the intention of strengthening resilience and biological security in the UK, and includes both global threats and threats that are already endemic in the UK,' Prof Oliver said. 'Infectious diseases don't respect borders,' she added.
Some experts have praised the new initiative, which the UKHSA has committed to 'updating regularly.'
A key criticism from the Covid Inquiry was that, before 2020, Britain's pandemic preparedness was too narrowly focused on the possibility of an influenza pandemic – leaving the country ill-equipped to handle other infectious threats capable of causing large-scale outbreaks.
'When Covid arrived, it took too long to adjust our response to a different threat, which was part of the reason we ended up in lockdown,' Mark Woolhouse, Professor of Infectious Disease Epidemiology at University of Edinburgh, said.
'Since the pandemic, there have been many initiatives to better understand the diversity of pandemic threats that the UK and the world may face in the coming years. The UKHSA's pathogen prioritisation exercise is a welcome contribution to this global effort,' Prof Woolhouse added.

Scientists in Scotland have created the first soft robots that can walk straight out of the machines that make them. The flexible, four-legged devices were developed using a new 3D printing system, which could pave the way for the use of intelligent soft robotic systems with no electronic parts. Soft machines – made from compliant materials such as soft plastics – have huge potential for use in areas such as nuclear decommissioning, the biomedical sector and in space, researchers say. A lack of standardised design and manufacturing processes, expense and the need for specialist expertise has so far limited real-world use of the devices, experts say. A team from the University of Edinburgh sought to overcome these challenges by developing a low-cost, desktop 3D printing system for creating soft robots. The team demonstrated the capabilities of their new system by creating robots made solely from a soft plastic material and powered by air pressure. Once printed, the palm-sized devices are connected to a compressed air supply before walking out of the machine on which they were made. Building and operating the new system – known as the Flex Printer – requires little prior knowledge, with first-time users able to assemble it and begin making robots in just a few days, the team says. They have made their designs publicly available to broaden access to soft robotic technologies and to help foster collaboration and improvements to the system. The research was funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The lead engineer on the project was Maks Gepner, with support from Jonah Mack, both PhD students in the Centre for Doctoral Training in Robotics and Autonomous Systems. The lead academic was Professor Adam A. Stokes, Head of the Institute for Bioengineering at The University of Edinburgh. Maks Gepner, of the University's Schools of Engineering and Informatics, said: 'It used to take years to figure out how to print using these materials. Using our new platform, anyone can now easily print things which were previously thought to be impossible. This is a game-changer for engineers and artists alike. 'Our hope is that this technology will help drive the next wave of research breakthroughs. Without the long-standing manufacturing and design bottlenecks holding it back, we believe soft robotics is ready to make a major real-world impact."

A virologist has said mosquito-borne diseases are "likely" to increase in range after West Nile virus was detected in the UK for the first time. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said fragments of the virus - which can sometimes make people seriously ill - had been found in wetland in Retford, Nottinghamshire. Prof Jonathan Ball, director of the Centre for Global Virus Research at the University of Nottingham said climate change meant tropical viral diseases would become more established further north. This summer, Gamston in Retford will be among a number of locations to undergo mosquito surveillance as part of a national project to understand mosquito activity across Britain. The West Nile virus has two hosts, Prof Ball said, birds and mosquitoes. "Occasionally, that virus can pass on to humans and cause disease," he said. "About two in 10 people who are infected can show signs of disease, which is fever, those kinds of things. "But occasionally, about one in 150 people who become infected can show more severe disease." There have been no human cases of locally-acquired West Nile Virus in the UK to date. Prof Ball said the discovery of West Nile in Nottinghamshire was not something the general public needed to be "too concerned" about. "It is something we need to be aware of - it's likely that these are going to increase in range," he said. "It's just a general trend that lots of these viruses – knows as flaviviruses – these are viruses that circulate in mosquitoes and they're general around the tropics. "But because of global warming they're increasing their range northwards and it does mean there is a risk that we're going to see some of these tropical viral diseases become established further and further north." He added the best way to avoid the virus was to "avoid being bitten" by covering up and using insecticide. The project in Gamston will see the UK Health Security Agency work with Bassetlaw District Council and Nottinghamshire County Council to increase surveillance on land along the River Idle.
