US push for Australia to ‘step up' on defence aims to deter China
The US Defence Department is increasingly concerned that Australia isn't pulling its weight when it comes to defence.
'This is because they think that will contribute to a more effective deterrent against Beijing,' Mr Kelly told Sky News host Sky News host Sharri Markson.
'Implicit in that is really an admission that America can't deter Beijing on its own, at least not anymore.'
