Up to 1,000 people partake in Raise the Roof rally in Cork
Up to 1,000 people took to the streets of Cork this afternoon calling for urgent Government action to end homelessness and the housing crisis. The rally, under the umbrella of the Raise the Roof campaign, followed last Tuesday's protest outside the Dáil in Dublin. The national campaign is organised by a coalition of trade unions and Opposition political parties. Among the unions present were SIPTU, Fórsa, the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation and the Community Action Tenants Union. Joe Kelly of the Cork Council of Trade Unions said it was great to see people coming out in force to demand that there is a change to the housing policy of the Government. "People are very angry. We have workers on all sides of the economy and they are just priced out of housing. People have good jobs and they still can't a roof over their head," he said. TDs and councillors from Sinn Féín, the Green Party, the Labour Party and the Social Democtrats marched as did members of People Before Profit, the Socialist Party, the Irish Traveller Movement and Derelict Ireland. Jude Sherry and Frank O'Connor of Derelict Ireland carried a banner showing dozens of photographs of derelict homes from across the country. Ms Sherry said: "The whole of the country is crumbling. Every town, village and city has vacant and derelict properties in it. "So we have enough homes in Ireland to meet the emergency of getting everyone a home, even just the amount of council homes in the country is enough to ensure there is no child in emergency accommodation or going without a home." Labour Senator Laura Harmon said the State has to step in to build houses. "Something absolutely has to be done, we are losing teachers, gardaí, nurses, key workers from this country because of the housing crisis. I believe the housing crisis is the biggest threat to our economy here in Ireland, we need to treat it like an emergency," she said. Social Demoncrats TD Pádraig Rice said their message is that the Government's housing policy have failed and they need to change, while Sinn Féin's Thomas Gould said the clear message from today's rally is that "we need homes, and we need them now".

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts gifts pink toy luxury car to Shohei Ohtani's baby daughter
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts and his wife have gifted Shohei Ohtani's baby daughter with a pink toy Porsche. Ohtani posted a video of him, Roberts and the toy car on his Instagram account. 'We had a little running practical-joke situation going on,' Roberts said Wednesday, 'but this was a gift for the baby.' Last May, Roberts joked that Ohtani should give him a Porsche when the slugger broke the Dodgers record for most home runs by a Japanese player. Ohtani obliged, gifting a purple toy model Porsche for Roberts' office. In breaking the record, Ohtani surpassed the mark set by Roberts, who was born in Japan, during his playing days. Ohtani went slightly bigger in March, when he left another toy Porsche in Roberts' parking space at Camelback Ranch in Arizona. Ohtani gifted Ashley Kelly, wife of Dodgers pitcher Joe Kelly, a Porsche for her husband giving up his No. 17 when Ohtani signed with the Dodgers in December 2023. Ohtani's first child was born on April 19. He and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, have not revealed the baby's name or any other information in keeping with Ohtani's penchant for privacy. Ohtani's reaction to the gift from Roberts and his wife Tricia? 'He was very grateful,' Roberts said. ___ AP MLB:

Yankees Embarrassing Inning Remembered in Dodgers Championship Ring
The Dodgers got their World Series rings on Friday night and somehow, the New York Yankees were owned again. The ring is covered in gems and symbols. There are palm trees and the Dodgers' iconic logo along with each player's unique signature and the logo and series score of the teams they beat on their way to the franchise's eighth World Series title. New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge misplays a ball in the World Lang-Imagn Images But that's not the only mention of the Yankees. Advertisement As part of the ring's design, the back band of the ring includes five diamonds. Those five stones represent the five runs the Dodgers scored in the fifth inning of Game 5 of the World Series. Yes, that inning. The one where the Yankees forgot how to field, throw, catch routine fly balls or cover first base. It was the most embarrassing stretch of baseball the Yankees played all season, and it happened on the biggest stage. And now it's literally memorialized in stones. It's not the first time the Dodgers have trolled the Yankees about Game 5. The team's charity auctioned off the ball that Aaron Judge missed in that inning this winter. Advertisement During the offseason, Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly took every chance he got to remind the baseball world just how lopsided that inning was. Kelly, as usual, didn't exactly hold back, saying his son's Little League team had better fundamentals than Gerrit Cole, who failed to cover first base in that inning. The Yankees have agonized over that inning all winter. They have not made excuses and admitted that it stings. They did not take the bait when the Dodgers made comments this winter. They have said all the right things and have used it as motivation. Now, that memory will be glistening on the fingers of the 2024 Dodgers for the rest of their lives. The Yankees? They'll keep wearing it, too—just without the ring.
