The ‘Mortal Kombat II' Team Worked Hard to Do Noob Saibot Right

You don't make a sequel to Mortal Kombat without a few key things. One is bringing in a ton of characters that weren't in the first movie. And two, make sure those characters are as recognizable from the games as possible. Director Simon McQuoid has done both of those things with Mortal Kombat II, in theaters October 24, and he recently pulled the curtain back on one fan-favorite character in particular. Noob Saibot, named after the creators of the original game, Ed Boon and John Tobias, has been part of the Mortal Kombat franchise since the second game. He's got a rich history and is often portrayed as the shadowy reincarnation of Bi-Han, the first Sub-Zero. Bi-Han was killed in the first film and, as teased in the film's trailer, has been resurrected in one form or another as Noob Saibot. But Noob isn't a normal fighter. He's got new powers to replace Sub-Zero's icy moves, including a shadow clone version that can fight alongside him, and figuring out how to bring those things to the screen practically was of paramount importance to McQuoid. 'To translate his distinctive 'shadow wraith' look onto film, we drew most of our inspiration from the recent version of the game,' McQuaid told Collider. 'Cappi [Ireland, costume designer] had the brilliant idea of creating unique materials and finishes that would reflect the light while always being true to Bi-Han's singular idea of being a shadow. His body was made of low-gloss textured black rubber under-skin, while his armor was organic in style and featured a dark grey pearlescent reflective finish. The shadow clone within him is a different character, so we needed a different costume and color, but they shared materials, ensuring his unique look was clearly separated from his shadow clone while always being born from the same character.' The director also said that, even beyond making the shadowy figure look as real as possible, one other piece was exceedingly difficult. 'The most challenging aspect of his design was his long-sided hat, which can defy physics in the game but can't in reality,' McQuaid said. 'Cappi and her team spent a lot of time creating a design that hung elegantly but also looked awesome at the same time.' From the little we see in the first trailer, it's clear that those intentions were achieved. And that Scorpion makes quick work of the shadow clone. Thankfully, we won't have to wait much longer to see what happens beyond that. Mortal Kombat II opens on October 4. Want more io9 news? Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection Gets Physical, Pre-Orders Live

Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection Atari Today, Digital Eclipse announced that not only are Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection pre-orders for a 2025 release, but it's also getting a physical release on each platform. The Standard and Deluxe Editions for all platforms will ship on December 12. Plus, they've confirmed that Mortal Kombat Trilogy , the only game in the series to include every single 2D Mortal Kombat character in the franchise, will be added to the collection. That brings the total game count up to nine different titles, but 20 total when you include all of the individual versions and variations, with still more to come presumably. There will be three different versions of the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and Switch 2. The Standard Edition will be $49.99 on platforms except Switch 2, where it will be $59.99. And anyone that pre-orders, will get a special Day One bonus slip-cover for their case. Then there's the Deluxe Edition, which will cost $69.99 for PlayStation 5 and Switch, or $79.99 on Switch 2. This edition includes the Standard Edition release, as well as a Steelbook, mini marquees, magnet, poster, lenticular card, arcade flyers, and arcade cabinet cards. Finally, the Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection Kollector's Edition is designed by Limited Run Games and will include the entire Standard Edition with a Goro controller holder statue, commemorative arcade token, hardcover art and lore book, as well as a pin set—with everything in a special, numbered, collector's box. This edition costs $149.99 on all platforms and pre-orders are only available until August 31. There's no timeframe for when this version will ship. Mortal Kombat: Legacy Kollection—Kollector's Edition Atari On the bright side, the press release specifically says, 'the Nintendo versions will ship with a game card containing the full game data,' instead of being a key card on Switch 2, but on the downside the Switch 2 version seems to cost an extra $10 for both Standard and Deluxe editions. Personally, I'm extremely excited to have all of these games together in a single release like this. The games I played the most growing up were Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat II on Sega Genesis, as well as Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on SNES. I also had a brief stint of obsession with the novelty of Mortal Kombat on Game Gear and Mortal Kombat II on Game Boy, because the portability factor blew my mind as a kid. I've never actually played Mortal Kombat Trilogy , but I've often considered picking up a Sega Saturn copy. This is really shaping up to be a great collection and with the sequel to the last Mortal Kombat movie coming up soon, it's a time for fans.

‘Peacemaker' Came to Comic-Con to Tease the End of Its Own Universe

The most in-your-face explanation for what's going on with Peacemaker in the new DCU can be found outside of San Diego Comic-Con. Simply put—as soon as you walk in past the HBO Max activation marquee for the Peacemaker 'Peacefest' in the Gaslamp District, you see a sign that reads, 'Relax, it's a state of emergency; you're fucked', dude.' io9 was invited to scope out the space, which allowed for some rocking fun as you walk in through a Quantum Portal into the 'altered dimension' of the Peacemaker universe. Hmm, we suspect Lex Luthor's pocket dimension, and that crack Clark and Mr. Terrific noticed at the end of Superman, might have something to do with this. The timed experience gives you a chance to look at some of the props for the series, which returns August 21 on HBO Max. One of the major things we noticed right away was the giant Mighty Crabjoys poster adorning one of Peacemaker's helmet walls, so we at least get the sense that Superman might not be the only person in their fan club. Which really, lucky for Peacemaker, in case he needs help from Big Red whenever Rick Flagg Sr. finally gets around to revenge. Peacefest also invited con attendees to get their rock show on to the show's theme song with a live band, while stations offered the usual photo-ops, drinks, and some Mortal Kombat stations to celebrate Peacemaker's addition to the roster for Mortal Kombat 1. One of the signs our Peacemaker friends might be in danger was also literally this TV under a 'Lost and Found' sign with an arrow pointing to the show playing on a real fuzzy and deteriorating VHS tape. It was, however, the closing song that gave way to some really distressing spoiler-ish answers. As the show ended, the band left, but Peacemaker sent a message to GTFO while another flashed across his face: 'Warning: Alternate Dimension Collapsing.' We know season 2 is going to be dealing with bridging the gap between the old DCU and DC Studios' post-Superman, canon, but this makes it feel like stakes are going to be very dire as Peacemaker tries to make it over to the new normal in one piece… especially as we know there's going to be some Peacemaker vs. Peacemaker shenanigans as well. We'll find out more at the San Diego Comic-Con panel later this week! Check out the gallery below for more hints and a look inside Peacefest. Stay tuned here at io9 for more SDCC '25 and Peacemaker coverage. Want more io9 news?
