Coronation Street's Sue Cleaver calls cast member 'impossible' to work with

Daily Mirror09-05-2025

Coronation Street's Eileen Grimshaw star Sue Cleaver has opened up about which cast member she finds it 'impossible' to work with as she gears up for her big exit
It's not long until Sue Cleaver bows out of Coronation Street after 25 of playing iconic character Eileen Grimshaw.
During her time on the ITV soap, Eileen has been involved in a number of hard-hitting and emotional storylines. Most recently, the tragic death of her sister Julie Carp (Katy Cavanagh). However, Sue revealed the moments aren't as emotional off camera, as she finds herself in fits of laughter during the most "inappropriate" times.

Speaking on the soap podcast Off Script actress Sue revealed: "I laughed with Katy Cavanagh when she was dead on the floor bless her heart." She then explained how one of her tears rolled into Katy's nose, which had the duo in fits of laughter.

However, Sue revealed there was one actor who tops them all, revealing that Simon Gregson, who plays Steve McDonald, is "impossible" to work with.
"Working with Simon, that's just impossible," she said. The two work together in cab office Street Cars, as Sue explained: "We have a diary where we can be seen writing little notes. Really what is in that book is the most disgusting photographs of 'Sue by Simon, aged 4.'"
Sue then went on to explain that she returned the favour - but the book went "mysteriously" missing one day. "I think they removed it in fear of it getting into the wrong hands," she laughed.
Elsewhere in the interview, Sue revealed all about her "emotional" and "perfect" final scenes. which are expected to air in the coming weeks.

"I can't give anything away but it's absolutely fabulous. They really did me proud," she said, keeping quiet on the details.
"When I read it and saw it, I was really emotional. It's the perfect ending. It is everything that I wanted. They asked me what I would like and I decided a year ago that I was gonna go.
Sue then went on to speak about Ryan Thomas ' return, who will be reprising his role as her son, Jason for the big exit.

"I rang Ryan Thomas and I said, 'Ryan, I've not told work yet but I'm gonna leave. Would you come back? I'd really like you to take me out'. He said, 'I wasn't planning to but I can't refuse that can I'.
"It just felt really right that he was there," she said.

Sue Cleaver reflects on '25 years of laughs' after Coronation Street exit

Eileen Grimshaw had a special send-off during Friday's episode of the soap, where she was seen leaving for Thailand alongside her son Jason Grimshaw, played by Ryan Thomas. Simon Gregson's character Steve McDonald, Tony Maudsley's George Shuttleworth, and Eileen's son Todd, played by Gareth Pierce, all said goodbye to the matriarch before drivers from the local taxi firm honked their horns as she was driven off. In an Instagram post, Cleaver said: 'Well… that's a wrap. 25 years of laughs, tears, costumes, chaos — and one unforgettable journey. A post shared by Sue Cleaver (@officialsuecleaver) 'I'll miss this character like crazy, but what a ride it's been. Thank you for every moment.' Cleaver has played the outspoken and uncomplicated Eileen in the ITV show since 2000. Eileen came to Weatherfield to work at the local taxi firm, Streetcars, to provide for her two tearaway teenage children, Jason and Todd. She soon became friends with her boss Steve and came into conflict with Helen Worth's character Gail Rodwell (also known as Gail Platt). Cleaver took part in I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2022, where she opened up about reconciling with her birth mother, and was eliminated third. She also said her family is 'bizarrely interconnected' to other Coronation Street stars, including Worth who is godmother to one of her half-sisters, while her other half-sister's husband, John Bowe, appeared on the cobbles as Duggie Ferguson. In 2024, she released a book A Work In Progress in which she discusses how she feels she is not past her prime. In recent years she has appeared as a panellist on ITV chat show Loose Women.

Coronation Street spoiler videos for next week as unexpected pregnancy confirmed

Coronation Street continues to deliver the drama next week, as confirmed in our new spoiler videos, with unexpected bombshells dropped, secrets investigated and a horror showdown on the cards. Weatherfield is nothing if not dramatic! Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) is suspicious of mum Lisa (Vicky Myers) and thus asks her outright why she's being so secretive about what's in the files she was looking at previously. Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon), meanwhile, witnesses something and puts two and two together, believing that she's caught Lou Michaelis (Farrel Hegarty) up to no good. But is she on the right track? Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce), however, receives the biggest of all shocks when Theo's (James Cartwright) daughter Millie makes an unexpected revelation. For a first look at all the above, check out our new videos below. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Theo rushes out in the wake of Millie's arrival, much to the dismay of Todd, who is tasked with keeping an eye on her in his absence. Todd, however, stumbles upon Millie on the phone as she makes an appointment, prompting her to reveal that she's pregnant. Just what will Todd do with such information? Will he inform Theo? To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Following a memorial service in honour of Craig, Betsy quizzes Lisa on whyshe reacted the way she did when she caught her snooping through files. On the spot, Lisa claims it's because the files in question contains information regarding Betsy's donor, which she's not allowed to know until she's eighteen. Betsy agrees to leave things be, but it appears from her expression – not to mention the fact she sneaks out of the bistro! – that she has other ideas in mind.
