Dubai approves Dh650 million Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary project
To be completed over two phases, the first of which will be finished by the end of 2026 at a cost of Dh100 million, the project aims to boost biodiversity and establish the sanctuary as an eco-tourism destination.
It is hoped the development will place Dubai among the world's top three tourism destinations, with designs for the sanctuary based on the needs of both residents and tourists.
Sustainability in mind
New mangroves will be planted to increase coverage by 60 per cent within the sanctuary. New irrigation channels will also be built while mangrove forests will be rehabilitated to create new habitats.
The first phase of the project will see a 144 per cent increase of water bodies within the reserve, expanding their total area to 74 hectares and increasing carbon dioxide absorption by 60 per cent. An additional 10 hectares of mudflats will also be added.
The second phase, to be implemented at a later stage, will focus on enhancing the main infrastructure and recreational services. This will support the hosting of various events and activities, while a visitor centre will also be built.
It will involve the construction of 5.6km of cycling tracks, as well as 3km of walking trails throughout the sanctuary. The project is being co-ordinated by Dubai Municipality and the Dubai Environment and Climate Change Authority.
A natural haven
Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the largest and most significant nature reserves in Dubai, covering approximately 6.4 square kilometres.
It was the first site in the UAE to be listed under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance in 2007 and is classified under the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) guidelines.
The sanctuary is counted among the most biodiversity-rich natural reserves in the region, hosting nearly 450 species of flora and fauna, including 47 hectares of mangroves. It welcomes around 20,000 migratory birds annually, including the iconic flamingo.
'With its unique design, the project marks a major milestone in the development and preservation of natural reserves, Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, director general of Dubai Municipality, said. 'It reflects Dubai Municipality's commitment to protecting biodiversity and natural habitats through innovative practices that support sustainable growth and ecological balance.'

New US visa rules: Will UAE residents face delays? Embassy responds
The US Embassy in Abu Dhabi has urged UAE-based visa applicants to plan ahead for possible delays in processing as new rules requiring in-person interviews for most applicants take effect from September 2. When asked about the expected rise in interview demand, a spokesperson for the embassy told Khaleej Times that consular staff are 'working diligently to ensure an efficient, smooth, and effective visa process' despite the changes. 'All visa decisions are national security decisions and we will take the time needed to get these decisions right,' the spokesperson said. When asked what the embassy had to say to families or students in the UAE preparing to travel to the US in the coming months, the spokesperson said: 'In every case, we will take the time necessary to ensure an applicant does not pose a risk to the safety and security of the United States and that he or she has credibly established his or her eligibility for the visa sought,' the spokesperson said. Under the new policy, almost all non-immigrant visa applicants, including those under 14 and over 79, will need to attend an in-person interview with a consular officer. Exemptions will remain only for certain temporary visitors under the B visa category and for some official government travellers. When asked whether pending applications submitted before September 2 would still be processed under the old rules, the embassy did not confirm any exemptions, instead directing applicants to embassy and consulate websites for detailed information. The same response was given when asked about a potential grace period for those who had applied earlier. When asked about urgent cases such as medical, educational or humanitarian travel, the embassy said applicants may request expedited appointments through its system, with requests considered on a case-by-case basis. 'The Department of State is committed to protecting our nation and its citizens by upholding the highest standards of national security and public safety through our visa process. Effective September 2, 2025, the Department of State will update the categories of applicants that may be eligible for a waiver of the nonimmigrant visa interview,' the spokesperson added. This change reflects a move back to pre-pandemic visa procedures, when in-person interviews were conducted and waivers were only given in very limited cases. During the Covid-19 period, waiver eligibility had been expanded to reduce the number of visitors to embassies and consulates. Now that children under 14 and adults over 79 must also attend interviews, more people will be trying to book appointment slots. With these additional applicants joining the queues, this could lead to longer wait periods for travellers across all visa categories. Applicants are advised to regularly check the websites of the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the US Consulate in Dubai for the latest information on required documents, procedures and available appointments. Those who need to travel urgently for medical, educational or humanitarian reasons can ask for an expedited appointment. To do so, they must first complete the DS-160 form, pay the standard visa fee and schedule the earliest available regular appointment. Only then can they use the 'emergency request' feature on their dashboard to upload documents proving the urgency of their travel. If approved, they will be given a designated emergency appointment slot and if denied, their scheduled appointment will remain unchanged. Given the expected rise of in-person interview demand and the return to stricter screening, travellers are encouraged to start the visa application process early and be prepared for more detailed evaluation under the new security-first system.

Air Canada flights cancelled: UAE travel update
Air Canada flights to the UAE and destinations around the world have faced major disruption as more than 10,000 cabin crew went on strike. The airline carries an estimated 130,000 people daily, with scheduled flights carrying passengers from Dubai to Toronto. Air Canada flights cancelled Following negotiations between Air Canada and travel worker unions an agreement was announced on Tuesday, August 19 ending the suspended flights. However, days of travel disruption are still expected. Canada's largest carrier said it will gradually resume flights, but normal operations could take more than a week to resume. Air Canada said: 'Some flights will continue to be cancelled over the next seven to ten days until the schedule is stabilised. 'The airline's customers with cancelled flights can choose between a refund, travel credit, or rebooking on another airline. 'Air Canada said it will gradually restart its operations today after reaching a mediated agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) through a process overseen by a mutually agreed-to mediator, William Kaplan. Michael Rousseau, President and Chief Executive Officer of Air Canada, said: 'Mediation discussions were begun on the basis that the union commit to have the airline's 10,000 flight attendants immediately return to work, allowing the airline to resume the operations of Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge, which have been grounded since August 16. 'The suspension of our service is extremely difficult for our customers. We deeply regret and apologize for the impact on them of this labour disruption. Our priority now is to get them moving as quickly as possible. 'Restarting a major carrier like Air Canada is a complex undertaking. Full restoration may require a week or more, so we ask for our customers' patience and understanding over the coming days. I assure them that everyone at Air Canada is doing everything possible to enable them to travel soon,' said The first flights are scheduled for the evening of August 19, but customers are advised that the airline's return to full, regular service may require seven-to-ten days as aircraft and crew are out of position. During this process, some flights will be cancelled over the next seven to ten days until the schedule is stabilized. Only customers with confirmed bookings whose flights are shown as operating should go to the airport (check your flight's status on or on the Air Canada mobile app before going to the airport). Air Canada will offer options to those with cancelled flights, including obtaining a full refund or receiving a credit for future travel. The carrier will also offer to rebook customers on other airlines, although capacity is currently limited due to the peak summer travel season. Air Canada flight suspensions On August 18 a message on the Air Canada website said: 'Air Canada has suspended its plan to gradually resume operations, after CUPE illegally directed its flight attendant members not to return to work. 'Please do not go to the airport unless you have a confirmed booking on another airline. We will notify you of any impact to your flight itinerary. Additionally, you can check your flight's status online or on the mobile app. 'If you are booked to travel between August 15 and August 22 and would like to make alternate travel arrangements, you can change your flight for free if: 'You purchased an Air Canada ticket or redeemed points for an Aeroplan flight reward no later than August 17, 2025 'If you're scheduled to travel during this period, you can retrieve your booking to change to another Air Canada flight, for free on: Another date between August 23 and September 30, 2025 If you purchased a non-refundable fare, you may cancel your itinerary and receive the unused portion of your ticket in your AC Wallet or as a Future Travel Credit to use on your next Air Canada booking.
