‘Finding the right team seems to be an ongoing issue': John McEnroe on 2021 US Open Champion Emma Raducanu struggles
While 2021 US champion Emma Raducanu suffered a second-round 1-6. 2-6 loss against five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek in the second round of the French Open earlier this week, it also meant that the British former world number 10 could not better her Roland Garros record with her 2022 second-round loss.
With Raducanu now training part-time since January under coach Mark Petchey, who also works as a broadcaster, seven-time Grand Slam winner and commentator John McEnroe believes it's an 'ongoing issue' and the former world number ten needs to find the right team.
'I see that she's still in and out to some extent with injuries. Finding the right team seems to be an ongoing issue. I don't know why, I haven't spoken to her. I've met her a couple of times in my entire life. I certainly wish her the best. Anyone that's won a Slam, you want to see them continue to compete at a high level. It boils down to sort of getting, to me, the right situation around you so that you can be eager to get yourself as healthy and fit as possible, so that you can then go compete at the level you want to consistently. That's the key. I don't know where she's at there,' McEnroe told Tennis 365.
Raducanu is currently ranked 41st in the world rankings and had a 10-5 win-loss record in her last five tournaments with her reaching the quarter-finals and last 16 of the Miami Open and Italian Open in recent weeks training under Patchey. Since she won the US Open in 2021, Raducanu has struggled with injuries and form with her best finish in a Grand Slam being the fourth-round finishes in Wimbledon in 2021 and 2024.
Four-time Grand Slam winner Jim Courier sees this year as a rebuilding year for Raducanu. 'It's a rebuilding year for her, she's been working on rebuilding her body, now she's working on rebuilding her confidence. And some of that comes down to also once you get that confidence you get a little bit more aura and you bring some swagger back to the court and that affects how your opponents view playing you as well. So, this is going to be a very interesting rest of the year for her. I wish her the best. I hear she's a wonderful person,' Courier told TNT Sports.
Patchey, who had worked with then 18-year-old Andy Murray for ten months in 2006, had also trained Raducanu in 2020. Raducanu was earlier training under full-time coach Nick Cavaday before she parted ways with Cavaday.
The former British number one, who also has broadcast commitments with TNT Sports, talked about adjustments Raducanu needs to make. 'From my point of view, it's tough on Emma as I still feel everyone is living in 2021. The games have changed massively. The balls are four times heavier than back in 2021 and Emma isn't the biggest hitter out there. If you can't put the ball through the court on a windy, heavy clay court day against someone like Iga, you're going to get into all sorts of trouble,' Petchey told.
The coach also talked about Raducanu needing to start closing the gap between the best players. 'Since I started helping Emma, I said she needs to start closing the gap between the best players. She doesn't need me to sit between 20-50 in the world and, if I'm not the best choice, she needs to find the best choice. My mantra to her has been that you are starting your career now. Everyone is judging you on what happened in 2021 but the reality is, I want to see you building a career here where people judge you in two years.'

Sinner, Zverev into French Open last 16, Keys and Gauff fight through
World number one Jannik Sinner powered into the French Open last 16 on Saturday alongside last year's runner-up Alexander Zverev as Madison Keys survived three match points to advance with fellow US women Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Hailey Baptiste. Novak Djokovic faces a Champions League clash as he steps up his pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam later on Saturday against Austrian qualifier Filip Misolic on Court Philippe Chatrier. But Sinner eased through 6-0, 6-1, 6-2 against outclassed world number 34 Jiri Lehecka hours before the kick-off between Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain for European club football's biggest prize. "I think in early stages of Grand Slams it's good that you don't spend so much time, if you have the chance, on court," said the top seeded Italian. "I don't think there's much I could improve." Three-time Grand Slam winner Sinner next meets Russia's Andrey Rublev, who advanced after France's Arthur Fils withdrew injured on Friday. Sinner has been finding his feet since his comeback from a three-month doping ban, reaching the Italian Open final where he lost to reigning Roland Garros champion Carlos Alcaraz. And the 23-year-old has continued his fine form on the clay in Paris where he has not dropped a set, extending his winning streak at Grand Slam events to 17 matches after titles at the 2024 US Open and Australian Open this January. British fifth seed Jack Draper proved too strong for Brazilian teenage sensation Joao Fonseca, winning 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 to progress through to the fourth round, where he will meet Alexander Bublik. German third seed Zverev, who lost last year's final to Alcaraz, won 6-2, 7-6 , 6-1 on Court Philippe Chatrier against Hamburg champion Flavio Cobolli. "It was quite hot today, and I definitely felt it on the court," said Zverev. "But, yeah, happy to get through in three sets and not waste extra energy. "This court is very special to me. I had some of the best memories of my life on this court, but I also had some of the worst memories on this court," said Zverev, who picked up a bad ankle injury in the 2022 semi-finals against Rafael Nadal. "It's a love story that hasn't got to the happy end yet, but I hope someday it will." In the women's tournament, seventh seed Keys edged compatriot Sofia Kenin 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Keys will again face another countrywomen in the next round after Baptiste downed Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro 7-6 , 6-1 earlier in the day. Keys and Kenin shared breaks early in the decider, before the reigning Australian Open champion broke the 31st seed at 5-5 and then held serve to see out the match. Former Australian Open champion and Roland Garros runner-up Kenin had led 3-0 in the third set and held three match points over Keys, before the world number eight turned the match round to book her place in the last 16. World number two Gauff booked her ticket to the same stage with a straight-sets win over Czech Marie Bouzkova. The 21-year-old won through 6-1, 7-6 against the world number 47 and next plays Ekaterina Alexandrova, the 20th seed, who beat fellow Russian Veronika Kudermetova 6-2, 6-2. Third seed Pegula joined her fellow Americans with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Czech Marketa Vondrousova. Pegula, last year's US Open runner-up, next meets the unheralded Lois Boisson, ranked 361 and the last French player competing in Roland Garros. Boisson fought through the pain to see off 138th-ranked compatriot Elsa Jacquemot 6-3, 0-6, 7-5. "Obviously.. going to have some crazy support," said Pegula. "I think it will be fun. It will be cool to be a part of that." Earlier, 18-year-old Andreeva eased into the last 16 with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kazakh Yulia Putintseva. Sixth seed Andreeva took 78 minutes to dispatch Putintseva to set up a showdown with Daria Kasatkina, ranked 17. Kasatkina, now playing for Australia after switching allegiance from her native Russia, got past Spanish 10th seed Paula Badosa 6-1, 7-5. After a closely-contested first set, Andreeva took control winning nine of the last 10 games of the match. "I'm happy that with every match I play, I feel better and better," said the Russian. ea/nf

A'bad-G'nagar hospitality sector getting bigger
1 2 A hmedabad: The hospitality scene is getting bigger in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar with the twin cities set to add 1,200-plus room keys in five new upcoming premium hotel projects. Currently, the city has at least 6,500 keys in the five-star hotel category. On Thursday, Ahmedabad realty firm AG Group signed a contract with InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) for a 150-key Holiday Inn hotel along the New Science City area. This mixed-use project spread over 1.6 million sq ft comprises residential towers and the hotel, with AG Group committing an investment of Rs 200 crore for the hotel alone. Gandhinagar-based Kavyaratna Group too recently signed a contract with Hyatt Hotels Corporation for a new property in GIFT City. Sources familiar with the development confirmed that the hospitality chain is slated to come up with another property in Sanand Industrial Estate. From global chains expanding their presence to strategic locations being tapped for business and leisure travellers, the influx signals growing investor confidence in Gujarat's economic hub. Vikram Bharwad, director of AG Group, said, "We will build a 1.25 lakh sq ft hotel, which will be managed by IHG. Construction will be completed by 2028. We also plan to launch at least five more hotels and resorts in various parts of the country in the years to come." "Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar and GIFT City are developing as attractive hubs for businesses and industrial growth. That apart, being home to the world's largest cricket stadium at Motera, Ahmedabad has hosted iconic tournaments like the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup, British rock band Coldplay's live concert, and Indian Premier League (IPL) matches. The city's stature is rising not just as an industrial and business district but also as a cultural, sports, and events hub, which is bound to drive travellers from across the globe to this city. As a result, hospitality investments are on the rise in this region," said Narendra Somani, president, Hotels and Restaurants' Association (HRA) – Gujarat. IHG is also planning more expansions in the region. Sandip Jain, MD, IHG Group, said, "This will be the third hotel by IHG Hotels and Resorts in Ahmedabad. The city has seen growing demand from guests and corporates with increasing business activities and growing income. We currently have around 240 rooms in two hotel brands in the city, and this contract will add around 150 rooms." Sources confirmed that Marriott International's luxury hotel brand, St Regis, is also likely to come up along Sabarmati Riverfront's west bank. TOI had reported that Marriott International is in talks to set up a hotel under its brand JW Marriott at the Adani Shantigram campus on SG Road. The American hospitality major's existing property in the Ramdevnagar area of Ahmedabad is all set for a revamp and rebranding as Le Meridien. SK Patel, chairman of Kavyaratna Group, said, "We are developing a 210-room hotel, spread over 2.40 lakh sq ft with an investment of around Rs 450 crore. GIFT City is emerging as a global financial hub, offering good opportunities for the hospitality sector." Adani Group is also in advanced talks to develop Aerocity at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) airport in Ahmedabad, which will house hotels, a convention centre, and retail spaces.
