Rain, flooding lead to low turnout in Mumbai schools

He also highlighted concerns about academic scheduling ahead of the upcoming Ganesh festival. "We usually aim to finish our first unit tests before the festive break, but with nearly three instructional days lost, we now have to find ways to make up for this time."

Some schools saw near-total shutdowns. At IES New English School in Bandra, very few students and no teachers were able to attend. "I live in Virar and could not make it to school myself, as I was uncertain if the trains would run," said the principal, Shilpa Ashtamkar.
She adds "many of our students come from chawls and humble tenements nearby and have been the worst affected by the flooding."
Madhav Suryavanshi, a teacher at the Khar Education Society School, reported similar challenges. "We had only 50 percent attendance in the morning batch, but as the showers let up by afternoon, around 70 percent of students showed up."
Almost every neighbouring municipal corporation and district administration declared a holiday for Aug 20, the BMC held out possibly trying to avoid declaring a needless holiday, but the rains of the past three days deterred parents from sending their wards to school resulting in a loss of an instructional day for most schools.With Ganesh holidays approaching, schools are now under added pressure to complete the syllabus and conduct pending unit tests within a compressed timeline.

CS alerts power utilities after IMD red alert
Vijayawada: Chief secretary K Vijayanand on Tuesday directed the state power utilities to remain vigilant following a red alert issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). A red alert indicates 'heavy to extremely heavy' rainfall of over 20 cm in 24 hours. The IMD has forecast heavy rains in Visakhapatnam, Anakapalle, Dr B R Ambedkar Konaseema, Kakinada, West Godavari and several other districts in the state. 'Power utilities should be on high alert and take every precaution to safeguard public safety and ensure uninterrupted supply, while being ready for rapid restoration in the affected areas,' said Vijayanand in an official release. The chief secretary reviewed the preparedness of state power utilities during a virtual meeting, stressing on arrangements for quick response to possible damage from heavy rains and strong winds. Vijayanand instructed distribution companies (discoms) to stock necessary equipment to attend to power cuts and avert electrocutions. Vijayanand ordered setting up round-the-clock control rooms while nodal officers were instructed to coordinate with them. He also said that excavators, cranes and power saws should be kept ready in coordination with local authorities and disaster management teams. Similarly, he directed power utilities to take precautions near religious marquees which are erected for the forthcoming Ganesh festival, ensuring strict adherence to electrical safety measures. He further said that utilities must be fully prepared to meet peak demand supply without any interruptions and stressed that all staff, from linemen to senior officers, must stay vigilant. Several places in Andhra Pradesh are witnessing heavy downpour following a well marked low pressure developing into a depression. However the depression crossed the coast near Gopalpur in South Odisha on Tuesday morning.

Discoms told to be alert amid heavy rain forecast in A.P.
With IMD forecasting heavy rains in Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Konaseema, Kakinada, and West Godavari districts, Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand held a review meeting with APTRANSCO and DISCOM officials in virtual mode. He directed utilities to stock materials, generators and pumps, and ensure quick restoration in case of outages. Officials were told to set up round-the-clock control rooms, appoint nodal officers, and coordinate with district administrations. Special safety measures were advised near Ganesh pandals ahead of the festive season, while linemen and senior staff were instructed to remain on duty without leave until conditions become normal. Mr. Vijayanand assured that the government remains committed to ensuring 24x7 supply and uninterrupted agricultural power. Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation (APGENCO) Managing Director K.V.N. Chakradhar Babu reviewed critical equipment works at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Haridwar. During his visit to BHEL Haridwar, Mr. Chakradhar Babu inspected the manufacturing of generators, turbines, rotor blades, and other key components for APGENCO projects, including the Lower Sileru and Polavaram schemes. He reviewed major repair works on 800 MW generator rotors and turbines from APGENCO's thermal stations. Stressing quality workmanship and strict timelines, he said the timely completion of these projects would significantly strengthen the State's power supply.
