Tom Cruise ‘cried' during emotional reunion with Val Kilmer on Top Gun: Maverick
The American actor, also famed for his performances in Willow, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Tombstone and as Jim Morrison in The Doors, died at the age of 65 on April 1. The cause of death was pneumonia, his daughter confirmed.
Kilmer, who appeared alongside Cruise in the 1986 original Top Gun, was diagnosed with cancer in 2015. After successfully undergoing chemotherapy and two tracheotomies, Kilmer spoke with the use of a voice box.
When he reunited with Cruise in Maverick, his character, Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky, was seen speaking through a computer due to an unspecified illness.
'I just want to say that was pretty emotional. I've known Val for decades,' Cruise said while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2023.
'For him to come back and play that character… he's such a powerful actor that he instantly became that character again. You're looking at Iceman.'
'I was crying. I got emotional,' Cruise admitted. 'He's such a brilliant actor, and I love his work.'
In the original Top Gun, Iceman is Maverick's chief rival in the naval aviator training program. Maverick eventually earns Iceman's respect after saving his life, leading Kilmer to the immortal phrase: 'You can be my wingman anytime.'
In 2022, 63-year-old Kilmer shared a still from the movie on Instagram with the poignant caption: '36 years later… I'm still your wingman <3.'
Cruise previously revealed that he 'rallied hard' to get Kilmer into the first action movie.
Top Gun: Maverick was the top-grossing film of 2022; it was the 11th highest-grossing movie in history worldwide and was nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.
At the Academy Awards nominees luncheon that year, Steven Spielberg credited Cruise with saving 'Hollywood's ass.'
'Seriously. Maverick might have saved the entire theatrical industry,' the director told the actor.

Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen meet up in Liverpool during flying visit to LIPA
Music legends Sir Paul McCartney and Bruce Springsteen have met up as The Boss prepares to perform the second of two shows at Anfield as part of his current UK tour. The pair were visiting Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts (LIPA) on Mount Street, which Macca co-founded. Springsteen, 75, has made no secret of his admiration for the Fab Four, crediting the Beatles with heavily shaping his musical tastes, and he h's described performing on Merseyside as the fulfilment of a long-held dream. Members of the E-Street band Max Weinberg and Steven Van Zandt were also spotted making their way into LIPA through the crowds outside, all of which has fuelled wild speculation about whether Sir Paul will join Bruce on stage at Saturday night's concert. If he does it would not be the first time the pair have played together, with Springsteen joining Sir Paul on stage as a special guest during the 82-year-old's headline set at Glastonbury Festival in 2022. They also met up for additional gigs at Hyde Park and at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Growing up as a teenager in New Jersey as the Beatles took the USA by storm with a legendary appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, The Boss told audiences at Anfield: "It is great for us to be in Liverpool where, for us, it all began." Tom Cruise enters Guinness Book of Records for 'death-defying' stunt
Tom Cruise has once again raised the bar for action stunts, this time by setting a new Guinness World Record for the most burning parachute jumps by an individual. The Mission: Impossible star performed 16 such death-defying leaps during filming of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, the eighth chapter in the high-octane franchise. Guinness World Records made the announcement on Thursday, praising Cruise's dedication to authenticity and fearlessness. 'Tom doesn't just play action heroes – he is an action hero!' said Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief of Guinness World Records. 'His absolute focus on pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do is unmatched. It's an honour to recognise his utter fearlessness with this new title.' In the film's dramatic climax, Cruise's character Ethan Hunt faces off against his nemesis Gabriel, portrayed by Esai Morales, high in the skies. The scene culminates with Hunt jumping from a burning plane. After deploying his parachute, the fabric ignites and disintegrates, forcing him to cut away the charred chute and deploy a backup. Cruise, who is a licensed skydiver, executed the stunt 16 times. Each jump involved leaping out of a helicopter while strapped to a parachute soaked in fuel and set ablaze. According to Guinness, no other actor or stunt performer has come close to matching that number of fiery parachute drops. Cruise is certainly willing to push the limit. At one point during filming, director Christopher McQuarrie shared a terrifying moment when he feared Cruise had passed out while filming a death-defying stunt on the wing of a plane. 'We also knew that unless Tom did this [gestures], it was expressly agreed he was not in trouble and we could not cut – you can't do this when you're unconscious, so we're waiting to see if there's any indication Tom is okay, and we're waiting to see this sign and Tom is laying on the wing of the plane.'
