‘Bengaluru roads are breaking our backs': Kin suffers slipped disc, author slams pothole-ridden commute

Hindustan Times7 days ago
A post by a author on social media platform X has gone viral after she slammed the appalling condition of Bengaluru's roads, calling them not just bad infrastructure but "civic cruelty." The comment triggered a flood of reactions from across the country. (Representational Image)(HT Photo)
Sahana Singh's post, which includes a personal account of her brother-in-law suffering a slipped disc due to daily cycling on bumpy roads, has struck a chord with citizens frustrated by the city's crumbling commute.
'The roads of Bengaluru have got to be the worst in the world, absolutely worst of the worst,' Singh wrote. 'Whether I travel in autos or cars, I am holding my neck to prevent a recurrence of spondylitis.' Her brother-in-law, who cycles to work to avoid traffic jams, is now in severe pain, she added, blaming the uneven tar layering, potholes, and unscientific speed breakers.

The post ends on a sharp note, 'Bengaluru's roads aren't taking us forward; they're breaking our backs.'

The comment triggered a flood of reactions from across the country, some empathetic, others skeptical, and a few sarcastic.
Reactions online
One user remarked, 'Recommend him to use public transport. You can't fit an elephant in a fridge. Bengaluru has 1.2 crore vehicles. How can the city cope when everyone brings an SUV to pick up 500 ml of Nandini milk?'
Another added, 'Why should we let this go? Authorities must be penalised for such apathy. Maybe they should face jail time and asset seizures for every bad road.'
Some chimed in with regional rivalry. 'If there were a beauty contest for worst roads, humara Gurugram would give you tough competition,' one quipped, while others nominated Pune as a close runner-up. A more extreme suggestion proposed, 'The best vehicle for Bengaluru roads is a helicopter.'
However, not everyone agreed with Singh's assessment. One user called the post 'unnecessary gaslighting', saying, 'I've lived in Bengaluru for over 30 years. Some roads are bad, some are good, just like in every city. Yes, things need to improve, but this narrative is misleading.'
The post has sparked a fresh round of civic debate over accountability, urban planning, and the mental and physical toll of Bengaluru's chaotic road conditions, an issue many residents feel is perennially ignored.

Sikh sarpanch denied entry to Red Fort on Independence Day over kirpan

Chandigarh, August 17 (UNI) A Sikh sarpanch from Nabha block in Punjab, invited to Delhi for the Independence Day celebrations, was denied entry to the Red Fort on August 15 for carrying a kirpan, a ceremonial dagger integral to the Sikh faith. Gurdyan Singh, an Amritdhari Sikh and sarpanch of Kalsana village, was among those honoured by the Jal Shakti Ministry for exemplary work in sanitation, including setting up solid and water treatment plants and public sanitation facilities in his village. Despite being invited as a VIP to witness the Independence Day parade, Singh was stopped at Gate 5 of the Red Fort by security personnel who cited restrictions on carrying the kirpan. Singh explained the religious significance of the kirpan, one of the five Sikh articles of faith (Kakars), but was told he could leave it outside and retrieve it later. Stating that his religion does not permit removing the kirpan, Singh chose not to enter. Instead, he briefly watched the parade from the general gallery with the public. Singh arrived in Delhi on August 13. On the day of the event, he reached the Red Fort metro station by 5 a.m. to avoid delays, but his efforts were met with refusal from security officials. Man flies drone inside Pilibhit Tiger Reserve; probe ordered

Pilibhit (UP), Aug 17 (PTI) A man allegedly violated forest regulations by flying a drone inside the Pilibhit Tiger Reserve in Uttar Pradesh, prompting the forest department to order an investigation into the matter, officials said on Sunday. Deputy director of the reserve, Manish Singh, said a video of the incident is being examined. 'Flying drones in protected forest areas is strictly prohibited, as it poses a threat to wildlife and disturbs their natural activities. Strict action will be taken against the offender so that no one dares to violate forest protection rules in future," ," Singh told reporters. According to forest officials, the accused has been identified as Arbaaz Ansari, who runs an Instagram page named 'Pilibhit Zone'. Ansari allegedly flew a drone without permission in the Mala zone of the reserve, a core forest area, recording visuals after stopping by a roadside stretch and later uploading them on social media. Experts termed the act illegal and dangerous for the safety of the animal species in the reserve. The Mala range is considered highly sensitive, with past incidents of poaching and illegal wildlife activity reported from the area, they said. Lower Parel resident fires from air gun at delivery boy, arrested

A resident of Lower Parel was arrested on Saturday for allegedly firing at a 17-year-old delivery boy with an air gun over a dispute over payment for an online delivery of medicines. According to personnel of NM Joshi Marg police station, the accused Saurabh Kumar Singh, a resident of Prakash Cotton Mill in Hanuman Gali, Lower Parel, and works in a private bank, ordered some medicines online and opted for cash on delivery. When the order was delivered on Saturday, Singh allegedly found some medicines missing and refused to pay the full amount. An argument started between the delivery boy and the accused shut the door without paying the whole amount. The delivery boy sat for a while outside the door and rang the bell twice but when Singh refused to pay, he started repeatedly ringing the doorbell. An annoyed Singh brought out an air gun and threatened the boy to leave the place, pointing the gun at his chest. The boy did not leave and Singh fired at the boy, said senior inspector Vilas Rane of the NM Joshi Marg police station. The delivery boy then alerted his office and approached NM Joshi Marg police station from where a team visited the spot. Police said that despite being aware that the air gun shot could seriously injure the boy, the accused fired at him, said a police officer. A case was registered under sections 109 (attempt to murder), 125 ( acts that endanger human life), 351(2) (Criminal Intimidation), and 352 (Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the BNS and along with several sections of Arms Act against Singh and he was arrested.
