Former college football star Avantae Williams faces life in prison after arrest over deadly shooting
Williams, 24, a former safety for Maryland and Miami, was arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that left one man dead and a bartender injured at a bar north of Orlando.
32-year-old Keshod Harris was shot several times during an altercation at McCabe's in DeLand, around 34 miles outside of Orlando.
Cops responded to calls at the bar at around 1:30am local time on Saturday, DeLand Police Department said in a report.
Approximately 40 people where inside the bar when a fist fight broke out between several men before one produced a firearm and opened fire, eyewitness told investigators.
Harris was struck multiple times in the chest and was rushed to a local hospital where he later died of his injuries.
A bartender was also hit in the crossfire, sustaining gunshot wound to both hands. They were also transported to hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Williams is said to have fled the scene, according to the police report, but was identified as the suspect by investigators and detained on Monday after an arrest warrant was issued.
He is now in custody at the Volusia County Jail and is reportedly charged with second-degree murder. The sentence for second-degree murder in Florida is anywhere from 16 years to life.
It is currently unclear what triggered the altercation and it is not known if Harris was Williams' intended victim.
Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
'There was chaos, you know, everybody was running,' Stephanie Kirby, the bartender who witnessed the shooting, told Fox35.
'When bullets are flying, and you don't know where they're gonna land, that's pretty scary,' she added.
Kirby recalled hiding behind the bar before helping customers flee. She said her close friend and colleague, Courtney, was shot while trying to de-escalate the situation.
She described Harris, the victim, as being calm and socializing with friends before the altercation occurred.
'He wasn't like hardcore partying, but he was chill and hanging out with his friends. He bought friends some rounds, and he was out socializing.'
Williams, a DeLand native, played football on a scholarship for both the Maryland Terrapins and the Miami Hurricanes.
Williams graduated from DeLand High School after establishing himself as the top safety in his recruiting class, according to ESPN.
He went on to play two seasons for Miami before finishing his college career with Maryland during the 2023-24 season.

Couple are jailed after victim was raped on camera - but only found out when blackmailer sent her footage and demanded £5,000
A couple has been jailed after a man raped an unconscious woman while his partner filmed it. Their victim only found out what had happened when one of the pair blackmailed her by sending her the footage and demanding £5,000. Indre Bruziene, 40, and her partner Vasile Radacanu, 33, invited the woman to their address in Sheerness, Kent on September 18, 2020. They downed alcoholic drinks together at the property, causing the victim to become intoxicated. Radacanu then raped her during which she was, at one point, unconscious. Bruziene filmed the incident throughout, first from through a window and later from inside the home. Radacanu clearly was aware he was being recorded as he made gestures towards the camera on several occasions. The victim then woke up in her own bed the next morning with no recollection of what had happened to her. In March 2021, she received a call from Bruziene accusing her of breaking up her family before sending her the clip of the rape. She asked the woman for £5,000 and claimed that if she did not pay her she would send the video to the victim's husband. The victim refused to pay the sum of money and told her family about the ordeal before calling the police. Radacanu, from Romania, and Bruziene, from Lithuania, were both arrested the next day. Their phones were seized by investigators and Radacanu was later charged with two rapes, attempted rape and two sexual assaults. Bruziene was charged with blackmail. The pair pleaded not guilty at Maidstone Crown Court but were convicted of these on January 28, 2025, following a trial. Radacanu was sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison on Thursday, and Bruziene was jailed for three years and three months. Detective Constable Hollie Brown said: 'The criminal actions of Radacanu and Bruziene were unspeakably vile as they took advantage of a vulnerable victim who was not aware of what was happening to her. 'As soon as the victim received the video of her abuse from Bruziene she showed great courage in disclosing her ordeal to her family and then contacting the police. 'Detectives then swiftly secured the offenders phones and they have now, quite rightly, been brought to justice.'

Father of CDC shooter says son believed Covid vaccine had sickened him
The father of the man who opened fire outside the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters in Atlanta earlier in August has said that his son was grappling with untreated mental health issues when misinformation convinced him that the Covid-19 vaccine was lethally sickening him. 'I know my son wanted to make this about 'the jab', and that was his latest cause, but this is more about mental health than anything,' Ken White said in a new interview with Atlanta News First. White's son, 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White, fired more than 180 rounds at the CDC buildings in Atlanta on 8 August, according to authorities. The attacker fatally shot a police officer, David Rose, and then died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, investigators said. In his new interview, Ken White said his son had asked to borrow his car to meet a friend in the hours before the shooting. But at about 5pm that day, White and his wife received a phone call from their son. 'I asked him how he was doing,' White recalled. 'He said, 'I'm gonna shoot up the CDC,' and then he hung up.' White said he 'immediately tried to call him back' – but that Patrick had 'turned the phone off'. Moments later, White recounted, he saw a breaking news alert of an active shooter at the CDC and called 911. White said that he recognized his car on the television, confirming for him that it was his son who was the shooter. 'There's nobody else it could be,' White said. Several days after the shooting, authorities said that the firearms used in the attack were registered to Ken White, and that Patrick had stolen them from a safe. Authorities said that the weapons were securely stored, and that the gunman had 'forced his way' into the safe that contained them. 'I don't know how he got hold of the firearms, White remarked in the Atlanta News First interview. 'We thought they were safe. 'I locked them up. I kept the key on my person 24-7, and I slept with it.' Later in the interview, White said that 'as much as we're grieving for our son, [we're grieving] for [slain] Officer Rose a whole lot more'. The family said that Patrick had been displaying signs of mental illness during his last two years, including depression. But the family said that they did not know if he was ever formally diagnosed. The family said that they found bottles of medication prescribed for depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder that Patrick had left behind. White said his son's anger toward the CDC stemmed from Covid-19 vaccination misinformation. Authorities also said that they recovered documents and electronic devices belonging to Patrick that reportedly 'expressed the shooter's discontent with the Covid-19 vaccinations' and said that Patrick had written about wanting to make 'the public aware of his discontent with the vaccine'. A neighbor separately told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that Patrick was 'very unsettled, and he very deeply believed that vaccines hurt him and were hurting other people'. Ken White also confirmed that he and other members of his family were vaccinated. And it has been previously reported that Patrick was also vaccinated before he blamed the Covid-19 vaccine for making him depressed and suicidal.
