Jazz hire Austin Ainge as president of basketball operations

Yahoo04-06-2025
SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — The Utah Jazz have hired a new president of basketball operations… and the name may sound familiar.
After 17 years with the Boston Celtics, Austin Ainge will join his father, Danny Ainge, in Utah.

'We're absolutely thrilled to welcome Austin Ainge as our new president of basketball operations,' team governor Ryan Smith said. 'Austin is one of the brightest minds in the NBA—his 17 years with the Celtics have given him incredible insight into every part of an organization. I've known Austin for 15 years, and I've watched him grow into an accomplished, innovative, and strategic basketball executive who's ready to lead this organization.'
After playing in 101 games over four seasons at BYU from 2003-2007, the now 43-year-old Ainge began his NBA career in 2008 as a scout for the Celtics. He would go on to coach Boston's G-League affiliate team for two seasons before joining the team's front office where he would serve for another 14 seasons.
Jazz clinch worst record in franchise history
Ainge was key in assembling multiple Celtics rosters, helping to identify the draft selections of Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum, as well as the trade acquisitions of Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis, and Derrick White.

'This is an incredible opportunity to lead Utah Jazz basketball operations,' said Austin Ainge. 'I couldn't be more excited about the bright future of this organization. I look forward to partnering with Ryan and Ashley Smith and our other leaders within the Utah Jazz and will utilize my experience over the last 17 years building a championship-caliber organization. I have lived this my whole life, constantly studying teams, talent, chemistry and the selflessness necessary to win. I look forward to bringing that to Utah and am excited to give Jazz fans a lot to cheer about as we build our program back up.'
Ainge worked under his father, and Utah Jazz CEO, Danny Ainge, for over a decade in the Boston Celtics. Danny Ainge left the Celtics' organization in 2021. Danny Ainge is remaining with the team as CEO, as is current general manager Justin Zanik.
'Austin is one of the most respected executives in the NBA because of his basketball prowess, experience, and work ethic and I am excited to partner with him on our shared goal of success for the Utah Jazz,' said Zanik.
Jazz fall to #5 overall pick in NBA Draft Lottery

The Jazz are coming off its worst season in franchise history with just 17 wins during the 2024-25 season. Utah fell to the fifth pick in the NBA Draft Lottery. Utah's roster includes six recent first-round picks by the Jazz, and eight players under the age of 23.
Ainge will be formally introduced at a press conference this afternoon.

NBA scout: Luka Doncic will win MVP and get 'revenge on Dallas'

By now, it is widely known that Luka Doncic has a new and improved physique. He has taken his health, fitness and conditioning seriously this summer, and he has reportedly lost 30 pounds in total since last summer. Before and after he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in February, Doncic was flabby and out of shape, and late this past season, he was also dealing with at least one nagging ailment. As a result, he was clearly laboring to get up and down the court, although he still managed to finish the season with averages of 28.2 points, 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists a game. Some people around the NBA are now saying that Doncic is poised to win this coming season's MVP award. One scout watched Doncic play for his native Slovenia in a EuroBasket friendly versus Germany on Friday and was amazed by how the superstar looked. He told that the 26-year-old will do some great things once the new NBA campaign begins. 'Man, he looks incredible,' the NBA scout told 'He's quicker and more explosive. He's getting by people more easily. I think he's on a mission, man. I think he's gonna win MVP and the scoring title next season.' That same scout even feels that Doncic will be supremely motivated by something external. 'He wants to get revenge on Dallas for basically fat-shaming him,' the scout added. After the Dallas Mavericks sent him to L.A., they criticized Doncic's physical fitness and off-the-court habits through the media. Doncic may not admit it publicly, but it will likely give him some extra incentive to put forth a career-best effort. The Lakers likely won't win enough games for Doncic to win the MVP award. However, narratives could sometimes influence who wins the award well before voting takes place, and if enough voters feel this is a storyline that matters enough, and Doncic puts up the requisite numbers, the number of games the Lakers win may not matter that much. After all, the Denver Nuggets' Nikola Jokic won two of his MVPs when the team won under 50 games. In fact, he took home the award for the 2021-22 season even though Denver finished sixth in the Western Conference.

NBA release its Christmas quintupleheader schedule

NEW YORK — The Oklahoma City Thunder felt slighted last season when they were left off the NBA's Christmas schedule. That won't be an issue this year. MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the NBA champion Thunder will be working at home for Christmas this season, playing host to Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs as part of the league's annual Dec. 25 quintupleheader. The other Christmas games, released by the NBA on Tuesday: Cleveland at New York, Houston at LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers, No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg and Dallas visiting Golden State, and Minnesota playing at Denver. Some NBA Cup games are scheduled to be released Wednesday and the full schedule — 80 of the 82 games for all teams — is to be released on Thursday. The remaining two games for each club will be filled in December based on how teams fare in the NBA Cup. 'They make the schedule. We play it,' Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said last season, when asked about his club not being picked for the Dec. 25 lineup. 'Our players, I know, would have liked to play on Christmas because that's such a staple day in the NBA season. But we can't control that.' Well, they sort of did control their Christmas scheduling fate this season. The NBA champions typically get invited to play on Christmas the following season; Oklahoma City beat Indiana in a seven-game NBA Finals last season. The Eastern Conference champion Pacers are among the Christmas snubs this year, after losing Tyrese Haliburton to an Achilles tear that will sideline him for the entirety of this season and seeing Myles Turner opt to sign with Milwaukee in free agency. The Knicks will be playing their 58th Christmas game, extending their NBA record. The first Christmas game in league history was at Madison Square Garden in 1947. Boston, Philadelphia and Phoenix played on Christmas last season and didn't make the Dec. 25 cut this season, replaced by Cleveland (which was the East's No. 1 seed), Houston (which landed Kevin Durant in an offseason blockbuster from the Suns) and the Thunder. Cleveland and the Thunder are playing on Christmas for the first time since 2018. The Rockets have a Christmas game for the first time since 2019. James, if he plays on the holiday, will be making his 20th Christmas appearance in his record 23 NBA season. Only 12 NBA franchises have 20 Christmas games, and James could soon have that many as a player. And it'll be a big NBA holiday in Texas: All three of the state's teams are playing on Christmas for the first time. NBC's return to the NBA broadcast world officially starts with opening night on Oct. 21, when the Thunder will receive their championship rings before playing host to Durant and the Rockets in the first game of the season. That will be followed by Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Golden State taking on James, Luka Doncic and the Lakers in the second game of the NBC doubleheader. Those are the only two games on opening night. Peacock and NBC will have four games on Jan. 19, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The matchups: Milwaukee at Atlanta on Peacock at noon Central, followed by three games on NBC: Oklahoma City at Cleveland at 1:30 p.m., Dallas at New York at 4 p.m. and Boston at Detroit at 7 p.m. Memphis, which typically plays on the holiday, is not this season. The Grizzlies will be returning from Europe, after facing Orlando on Jan. 15 in Berlin and Jan. 18 in London.
