NBA release its Christmas quintupleheader schedule

NBA release its Christmas quintupleheader schedule

Chicago Tribune4 hours ago
NEW YORK — The Oklahoma City Thunder felt slighted last season when they were left off the NBA's Christmas schedule.
That won't be an issue this year.
MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the NBA champion Thunder will be working at home for Christmas this season, playing host to Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs as part of the league's annual Dec. 25 quintupleheader.
The other Christmas games, released by the NBA on Tuesday: Cleveland at New York, Houston at LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers, No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg and Dallas visiting Golden State, and Minnesota playing at Denver.
Some NBA Cup games are scheduled to be released Wednesday and the full schedule — 80 of the 82 games for all teams — is to be released on Thursday. The remaining two games for each club will be filled in December based on how teams fare in the NBA Cup.
'They make the schedule. We play it,' Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said last season, when asked about his club not being picked for the Dec. 25 lineup. 'Our players, I know, would have liked to play on Christmas because that's such a staple day in the NBA season. But we can't control that.'
Well, they sort of did control their Christmas scheduling fate this season.
The NBA champions typically get invited to play on Christmas the following season; Oklahoma City beat Indiana in a seven-game NBA Finals last season. The Eastern Conference champion Pacers are among the Christmas snubs this year, after losing Tyrese Haliburton to an Achilles tear that will sideline him for the entirety of this season and seeing Myles Turner opt to sign with Milwaukee in free agency.
The Knicks will be playing their 58th Christmas game, extending their NBA record. The first Christmas game in league history was at Madison Square Garden in 1947.
Boston, Philadelphia and Phoenix played on Christmas last season and didn't make the Dec. 25 cut this season, replaced by Cleveland (which was the East's No. 1 seed), Houston (which landed Kevin Durant in an offseason blockbuster from the Suns) and the Thunder.
Cleveland and the Thunder are playing on Christmas for the first time since 2018. The Rockets have a Christmas game for the first time since 2019.
James, if he plays on the holiday, will be making his 20th Christmas appearance in his record 23 NBA season. Only 12 NBA franchises have 20 Christmas games, and James could soon have that many as a player.
And it'll be a big NBA holiday in Texas: All three of the state's teams are playing on Christmas for the first time.
NBC's return to the NBA broadcast world officially starts with opening night on Oct. 21, when the Thunder will receive their championship rings before playing host to Durant and the Rockets in the first game of the season.
That will be followed by Stephen Curry, Jimmy Butler and Golden State taking on James, Luka Doncic and the Lakers in the second game of the NBC doubleheader. Those are the only two games on opening night.
Peacock and NBC will have four games on Jan. 19, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The matchups: Milwaukee at Atlanta on Peacock at noon Central, followed by three games on NBC: Oklahoma City at Cleveland at 1:30 p.m., Dallas at New York at 4 p.m. and Boston at Detroit at 7 p.m.
Memphis, which typically plays on the holiday, is not this season. The Grizzlies will be returning from Europe, after facing Orlando on Jan. 15 in Berlin and Jan. 18 in London.

NBA's 80th season tips off with Rockets at Thunder on October 21

Reigning NBA champion Oklahoma City will play host to the Houston Rockets on October 21 to tip off the league's 80th season, NBA officials announced on Tuesday. The Thunder will raise their championship banner before reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and his teammates face the Kevin Durant-led Rockets. The game will be the first of two on opening night for the 2025-26 season with the later start featuring the Golden State Warriors at the Los Angeles Lakers, as Golden State star guard Stephen Curry and Lakers' playmaker LeBron James -- both four-time NBA champions -- meet for the 57th time in their iconic careers. James, a 40-year-old forward, will become the first player in NBA history to compete in a 23rd NBA campaign while teammate Luka Doncic plays in his first season opener as a Laker. Durant, a two-time NBA champion and 2014 NBA MVP, was traded from Phoenix to Houston last month as part of an NBA record seven-team deal. The league also confirmed some other contest dates, including its Christmas schedule, ahead of Thursday's release of the full NBA schedule for the 2025-26 campaign. The December 25 lineup includes five NBA games, starting with Cleveland at New York, the Knicks having made a record 57 Christmas appearances. San Antonio will visit Oklahoma City in the Thunder's first game on December 25 since 2018 followed by Dallas at Golden State with ex-Warrior Klay Thompson returning to San Francisco with the Mavericks, then Houston at the Lakers and Minnesota at Denver. On the second night of the season on October 22, the Cleveland Cavaliers will visit New York while the San Antonio Spurs open their season at Dallas in the NBA debuts for top NBA Draft pick Cooper Flagg of Dallas and second choice Dylan Harper of the Spurs, who also welcome back French star Victor Wembanyama after he missed the end of last season with deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder. The following night sees Oklahoma City at Indiana in a rematch of last season's NBA Finals followed by Denver at Golden State with three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic of the Nuggets facing two-time NBA MVP Curry. October 27 will see Cleveland at Detroit and Denver at Minnesota. Martin Luther King Jr. Day games on January 19 will include Milwaukee at Atlanta, Oklahoma City at Cleveland, Dallas at New York and Boston at Detroit. js/ea

Fulton to return to Timberwolves for pre-season

CJ Fulton will return to the United States in September to link up with NBA side the Minnesota Timberwolves for their pre-season. The former Belfast Star player featured for the Timberwolves in the NBA Summer League, where he played four minutes in their 89-85 win against the Phoenix Suns last month. The appearance made him the third Irish-born player to take to the court at the highest level in the United States after Pat Burke and Susan Moran and, after impressing in Las Vegas, he has been invited back to train with the squad. Fulton has not signed a deal with the NBA franchise, but will now get the opportunity to prepare for the season with the franchise's full roster, including All Star Anthony Edwards. The back-to-back Western Conference finalists are scheduled to play six exhibition games, including hosting Guangzhou Loong Lions of China, before their regular-season opener against the Denver Nuggets on 27 October. Fulton initially caught the attention of the Timberwolves with his displays in the college game where he represented Lafayette and the Charleston Cougars, averaging 7.8 points and 6.5 assists per game for the latter during his senior year. The 22-year-old missed out on selection in the NBA draft in June but can still realise his dream of appearing in the league. Although the G-League - the NBA's team-affiliated development league - or a professional career in Europe remain options for the former St Malachy's College pupil, securing a place on an NBA roster is still the primary goal. 'It would be pretty big' - Fulton embracing NBA dream

Heat heading to Puerto Rico for preseason game vs. Magic. Here's Heat's full preseason schedule

The Miami Heat will take a trip to Puerto Rico before the start of the regular season. During a press conference at Kaseya Center on Tuesday afternoon, the Heat announced it will play a preseason game against the Orlando Magic at Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan. The exhibition will be played on Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. and will count as a Heat home preseason game. It will mark the Heat's seventh exhibition game in Puerto Rico in franchise history. The Heat previously played exhibitions in Puerto Rico in 1993 (a win over the Denver Nuggets), two in 1994 (splitting a pair of matchups with the Atlanta Hawks), 2003 (a win over the Philadelphia 76ers), 2005 (a loss to the Memphis Grizzlies) and 2006 (a loss to the Detroit Pistons). Among those in attendance for Tuesday's press conference at Kaseya Center to announce the news were former Heat player and current Heat scout and team ambassador Glen Rice, Heat Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer John Vidalin, Heat Spanish radio announcer Jose Paneda, former Magic player Nick Anderson and Magic Managing Director Ryan DeVos. Including the contest in Puerto Rico, the Heat will play six exhibition games this year. Two of those games will come against the Magic. The Heat's full six-game preseason schedule includes matchups against the Magic on Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. in San Juan, the Milwaukee Bucks on Oct 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Miami, the San Antonio Spurs on Oct. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in Miami, the Magic on Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. in Orlando, the Hawks on Oct. 13 at 6 p.m. in Atlanta and the Grizzlies on Oct. 17 at 8 p.m. in Memphis. The Heat's full 2025-26 regular-season schedule, along with the schedule for every other team in the league, will be announced on Thursday. But two of the 82 regular-season games won't be unveiled this week because they depend on how the group stage of the NBA's in-season tournament plays out. With the NBA beginning a multi-day rollout of the 2025-26 schedule, the league unveiled the Christmas Day schedule on Tuesday. The Heat again will not be featured on the holiday, as it has played on Christmas Day just twice since 2015. The NBA will announce each team's four group-play games for the in-season tournament on Wednesday. The Heat, which has been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, is not expected to have many nationally televised games on its schedule for this upcoming season. The Heat will hold its annual media day on Sept. 29 before opening training camp on Sept. 30 to kick off the 2025-26 season.
