News, notes, observations from the Dolphins' Wednesday practice session. Who impressed

Miami Herald7 days ago

Notes and observations from Wednesday's Dolphins OTA session, the first of five practices that will be open to reporters over the next 15 days before the team adjourns for time off before training camp:
▪ Cam Smith, the former second-round pick, was smoked by Jaylen Waddle on a 60-yard touchdown, then grabbed his quad at the end of the play. He was limping noticeably, left briefly and then returned.
Smith has battled injuries and performed unevenly during two seasons with the team and the Dolphins have put him on notice that he must perform. Miami has been counting on him to help fill a void at corner; whether he can remains to be seen.
▪ Austin Jackson, coming off knee surgery last November, was working at right tackle -- an encouraging sign. The one remaining health question on the offensive line will be whether new guard James Daniels, off a Week 4 torn Achilles, will be ready for training camp.
▪ Receiver Tyreek Hill, coming off two offseason wrist procedures, was training on his own doing 7 on 7 work and also doing a juggling drill with De'Von Achane that clearly showed he doesn't have a good mastery of the hand yet.
Hill, whose right wrist is heavily taped, will be ready for camp, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, has said on his TV segment.
▪ Tua Tagovailoa completed a 30-yard pass to Jaylen Waddle, who had two 30-plus yard catches and was the most impactful receiver working with Tagovailoa on Wednesday. Waddle did his damage against Cam Smith, Storm Duck and Ethan Bonner.
Waddle and Bradley Chubb were arguably the top performers Wednesday.
▪ Chubb, who hasn't played in a game in 17 month, sacked new No. 2 quarterback Zach Wilson twice, including once while being blocked by Ryan Hayes. He's rounding into form after major knee injuries.
▪ Second-year edge player Chop Robinson had a good day, including at least one sack.
▪ Duck, one of several players competing for a bigger job after the release of Kendall Fuller and the inevitable forthcoming trade of Jalen Ramsey, wore the orange jersey given to the previous day's practice standout.
Edge player Jaelan Phillips and cornerback Ethan Bonner wore the orange jerseys on Tuesday.
▪ There will be some growing pains for rookie second-round pick Jonah Savaiinaea. Matt Dickerson beat him for a sack.
▪ Receiver Tajh Washington, the 2024 seventh-round pick, was in a red non-contact jersey. He missed all of last season with an injury sustained during the summer.
▪ Tight end Tanner Connor, whose season ended prematurely last year due to injury, had a nice reception from Tagovailoa in 7 on 7 drills. Isaiah Johnson was in coverage. Veteran Jonnu Smith wasn't working Wednesday, so there were plenty of opportunities for the other tight ends.
▪ Besides Smith and Ramsey (who is no longer around the team), defensive linemen Zach Sieler also wasn't spotted, but these workouts are voluntary.
▪ Veteran running back Alexander Mattison, signed as a free agent in March, had a nice run after a catch from Zach Wilson on an outlet pass that he could have run for a touchdown if the play hadn't been stopped. Linebacker Willie Gay Jr. was vicitimized in coverage on that play.
▪ Rookie running back Ollie Gordon III has good speed and showed an ability to turn a corner on outside runs.
▪ Wilson completed a pass to Dee Eskridge, who made a nice one-handed catch with cornerback Kendall Sheffield in coverage. But Wilson also threw two poor passes.
▪ Safety Elijah Campbell stripped running back Jaylen Wright on a carry.
▪ Jaelan Phillips, off last September's knee injury, didn't participate in team work but has been involved in practice, Mike McDaniel said.
▪ Grayson Murphy, the former UCLA edge rusher who missed his rookie season last year due to injury, had a nice pressure on No. 4 quarterback Brett Gabbert, flushing him out of the pocket.
Miami Herald sports writers Omar Kelly and C. Isaiah Smalls III reported from the team's practice site in Miami Gardens.

Olympian Ilona Maher reveals personal detail about fashion show appearance

Ilona Maher helped the United States Olympic women's rugby sevens team to a bronze medal finish during the 2024 Paris Games and raised her profile with hilarious and heartfelt social media posts. Maher became a fan favorite during the Olympics and her increased celebrity led her to shine as a Sports Ilustrated Swimsuit model. She was in Miami Beach over the weekend walking down the aisle in a reddish-orange bikini and a turquoise one-piece that flashed her arms. "Men think they are tough but they'll never do Miami Swim Week wearing only bikinis while on their period like I did," she revealed in an Instagram reel on Tuesday. She captioned the post, "I applaud myself." The Americans defeated Australia 14-12 to win the bronze medal in the event. New Zealand won gold and Canada finished with silver. Maher played in six matches, finishing with 15 points and three tries. She was not the only athlete to walk down the runway for the fashion show. Former LSU Tigers gymnast, Olivia Dunne, was also at the event as one of the cover models for the swimsuit edition of the magazine. She stunned the crowd when she performed a split at the end of her routine. "I got triple dog dared," Dunne wrote on X afterward. Panthers acquire Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey in hypothetical trade offer from ESPN

Panthers acquire Dolphins CB Jalen Ramsey in hypothetical trade offer from ESPN The Carolina Panthers may have what it takes to reel in one of the biggest fishes on the market. With a few NFL stars still possibly up for grabs, ESPN enlisted the help of four analysts and experts to cook up some spicy hypothetical trade proposals. Among the players included in the simulation was Miami Dolphins cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who Benjamin Solak connected to the Panthers. Solak offered up a 2026 fourth-round pick from Carolina for Ramsey, and wrote the following: Ramsey is a fan of Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, who coached him in Los Angeles, and the Panthers have a big need at safety opposite new addition Tre'von Moehrig. As 30-year-old Ramsey enters the latter part of his career, safety might be a better position for him. If he has the legs to play corner, starting roles on the outside and in the slot are up for grabs in Carolina. The team made huge additions across its defensive front this offseason but still needs help on the back end. As Solak alluded to, Ramsey recently heaped a bit of praise on Evero, calling him one of the best coaches he's ever been around. The two spent three seasons together with the Los Angeles Rams, when Evero served as the team's safeties coach, secondary coach and defensive passing game coordinator. One of those three seasons ended with a Lombardi Trophy—as Ramsey, Evero and the Rams pulled out a 23-20 win against the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. Evero would then be hired as the Denver Broncos' defensive coordinator at the start of the next campaign in 2022. But back to the simulation—where ESPN Dolphins beat reporter Marcel Louis-Jacques favored Solak's offer from the Panthers over two from the Rams and one from the Los Angeles Chargers: Considering the Dolphins gave up only a backup tight end (Long) and a third-round pick to acquire Ramsey in the first place, Solak's offer is the closest thing to breaking even in terms of draft capital. An additional fourth-round pick from Carolina gives Miami a whopping seven selections in the first four rounds of the 2026 draft, not including any compensatory picks. Acquiring Ramsey would also entail some number-crunching for the Panthers and Dolphins. Ramsey still has four years remaining on his contract—with cap hits of $16.6 million in 2025, $25 million in 2026, $26.8 million in 2027 and $36.1 million in 2028. So, yeah, adding a three-time first-team All-Pro corner won't be that easy. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

Rockies snap historic streak of 22 straight series losses against Marlins

The Colorado Rockies ended their MLB record-setting streak of 22 straight series losses Tuesday night, a bright spot in what has been a miserable and mortifying 2025 campaign. The streak, which dates back to last season, concluded with a narrow 3-2 win over the Miami Marlins thanks to Hunter Goodman's eighth-inning go-ahead solo home run — his 10th of the season and third in the last two contests. The win came in front of an announced crowd of 7,583 at loanDepot Park in Miami. Tyler Freeman had three hits and Jordan Beck two as the Rockies tied the game in the fifth inning on Beck's RBI single and Thairo Estrada's sacrifice fly. Advertisement The win Tuesday marked only the second time the Rockies have won consecutive games in 2025; they defeated Atlanta April 30 and San Francisco the following day. It's also the Rockies' first series victory since defeating Arizona in two of three games last September. The Rockies will go for a sweep on Wednesday afternoon. Not much has gone right this season for the 11-50 Rockies. They have been swept in 10 of 20 series so far — most recently against the New York Mets. The mark ties them with the 1962 Mets, 1970 Brewers and 1994 Athletics for the most sweeps through their first 20 series. Colorado is averaging 3.16 runs per game this season, which is last in the league, trailing the Pittsburgh Pirates (3.18). That number has dropped slightly since the last week of May, when Colorado averaged 3.2 runs. The Rockies are second in runs allowed this season with 6.14 per game, per Stat Muse, which only slightly trails the Athletics' 6.17 runs per contest. Victor Vodnik, who came off IL in mid-May, worked 1 1/3 innings of relief for the win Tuesday night, retiring three pinch hitters to earn the win. The Rockies rank 19th in bullpen ERA (4.05), which isn't the greatest but isn't the worst, either. The Rockies are the fourth team since MLB expansion in 1961 to go 18 series before recording their first series win in a season. With the two wins in Miami, the Rockies are now 5-28 on the road. After the series finale in Miami Wednesday, Colorado will start a six-game homestand with three games against the NL East-leading Mets before a series with the San Francisco Giants.
