Rs 1 crore in cash, 6.75 kg gold seized from Congress MLA Satish Sail's house
The ED raid at the MLA's house began on August 13 and went on till Thursday morning. A day after the raid, the ED, in a social media post, said Rs 1.68 crore in cash and 6.75 kilos of gold have been seized along with several documents, while bank accounts of Rs 14.13 crore have been frozen. The ED, Bengaluru, conducted search operations at multiple locations in Karwar, Goa, Mumbai and New Delhi in an ongoing investigation into those MLAs and others who were convicted by the special court for MPs and MLAs for illegal export of iron ore.
Mankal Vaidya, the Congress's district in-charge, said that Sail has been filing income tax returns up to Rs 150 crore annually and will explain to the officials how he has earned his wealth in a fair and legal manner. Vaidya said the BJP government at the Centre is misusing the ED as a tool to harass Congress leaders.
The raid on Sail's house is considered as a follow-up operation after the ED team raided two mining giants of Vijayanagar district, Swastik Nagraj and Karadapudi Mahesh, former allies of the BJP leader Janardhan Reddy.

Money laundering case: ED raids Phagwara-based sugar mill, 7 other locations in Punjab, Chandigarh
The Enforcement Directorate carried out raids at eight locations in Punjab and Chandigarh in connection with a money laundering investigation worth ₹95 crore against Phagwara-based Golden Sandhar Sugar mill, previously known as Wahid-Sandhar Sugars Limited, its related entities, and persons. Raid underway at Phagwara-based Golden Sandhar Sugar mill on Wednesday. (HT Photo) The ED sleuths conducted searches at the mill premises in Phagwara, a residence at Khurampur village, and a gym at Phagwara, owned by Shiromani Akali Dal leader Jarnail Singh Wahid, who was previously co-owner of the mill with England-based NRI Sukhbir Singh Sandhar, who has not visited India after the registration of an FIR by the vigilance bureau. ED probe stems from VB FIR registered in September 2023. Wahid, a former chairman of Punjab Markfed, remained associated as managing director of Wahid-Sandhar Sugar Mill till 2024. Since 2024, the mill operations is handled by Rana Sugar Mills Limited, owned by Congress MLA from Kapurthala, Rana Gurjeet Singh, and his son, and Sultanpur Lodhi MLA Rana Inder Partap Singh. The federal agency initiated the investigation on the basis of a VB FIR registered in September 2023 against Jarnail Singh Wahid, his wife Rupinder Kaur, and son Sandeep Singh, and nine others under several sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act. An ED official said the Punjab government had allotted 31.2 acres of land on lease to Jagatjit Singh Sugar Mills in 1933 for 99 years, on certain terms and conditions that the land would not be transferable and mortgaged without getting prior approval. 'In 2000, Oswal Agro Mills Limited, a company of Jagatjit Singh Sugar Mills, signed a pact with Wahid-Sandhar Mills and sublet the lease to it. However, the Wahid Sandhar Sugars Limited, after acquiring the land, breached the conditions and mortgaged and sold the chunks of land,' an ED official said. 'During the investigation, it came to fore that the Wahid Sugar Mill mortgaged 31.3 acres of land for ₹93.94 crore. Moreover, the mill administrators also sold 6 kanal and 4 marlas of government land in 2019,' an official added. The central agency said Wahid Sandhar Sugar Limited caused loss to the state government and wrongfully gained benefits for themselves by such criminal activities 'Proceeds of crime amounting to ₹95 crore, generated out of such criminal activities, are under investigation,' it added. VB arrested Wahid, his wife and son in 2023 After registration of FIR, the VB arrested Jarnail Wahid, his wife Rupinder Kaur, and son Sandeep Singh on September 30, 2023, for allegedly misusing and mortgaging 31.2 acres of land given on lease by state government. The VB also booked Parveen Chhiber, then tehsildar of Phagwara, and presently posted in Nakodar, Pawan Kuman, naib tehsildar, mill directors Sukhbir Singh Sandhar, Jarnail Singh Wahid, Sandeep Singh Wahid, Harvinderjit Singh Sandhar, Aman Sharma, additional director, Manjit Singh Dhillon, and Kuldeep Singh Sandhar. All the accused are out on bail. The VB accused revenue officials of allegedly colluding with mill functionaries to prepare faulty revenue deals in order to sell/mortgage mill property and land for financial benefits. The case was registered under Sections 166 (public servant disobeying law), 177 (knowingly furnishing false information to a public servant), 210 (fraudulently obtaining decree for sum not due), 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant), 420 (Cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of IPC and other sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

AAP-BJP spar in Punjab over saffron party's campaign
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are at loggerheads over the saffron party's door-to-door campaign 'BJP De Sewadar Aa Gaye Tuhade Dwar', pitched as an outreach to help people register for central Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) schemes through their mobile phones. The state government has ordered a probe into the initiative, alleging that it is being used to illegally collect personal data. The row surfaced Wednesday when BJP alleged that Punjab Police stopped its teams at 39 locations across the state from assisting people in logging in for welfare schemes. Hours later, Punjab Police and the state government issued separate statements saying 'personal information of individuals was being collected under the garb of government schemes.' The police said multiple inquiry teams had been formed to verify complaints about 'unauthorised camps' and warned citizens against sharing Aadhaar and other sensitive details with anyone other than official agencies. A police spokesperson said Suvidha Centres were available to help citizens enrol in government schemes after due verification. The government, in a parallel statement, claimed it had 'credible reports' that private operators were collecting residents' data on behalf of political parties. It reminded that under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, collection or use of personal information without consent is a punishable offence. Local police have been directed to initiate strict penal action. Officials further said that several individuals who shared their details in such drives were later targeted in scams, including OTP misuse to siphon off money. 'The Government strongly urges citizens not to share personal information with unauthorised persons or agencies. They are advised to remain vigilant and immediately report such activity,' the statement added. The BJP hit back, accusing the AAP government of using the police to block its outreach. Punjab BJP working president Ashwani Sharma called the move 'undemocratic and anti-people.' In a post on X, he wrote: 'To ensure that the poor, SC communities, farmers, youth and women of Punjab benefit from Modi government's schemes, the 'BJP De Sewadar Aa Gaye Tuhade Dwar' campaign is being conducted across Punjab. In order to hide its own failure and inefficiency, and fearing Modi's growing popularity, the AAP government misused the police to stop our campaign at 39 locations.' He said a BJP delegation would soon meet the Governor to protest the state government's 'illegal actions.' BJP spokesperson Vineet Joshi added that the campaign, launched on June 20, was focused on spreading awareness about welfare schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, PM Kisan Samman Nidhi and schemes for Scheduled Castes. 'There are no camps as the government claims. Our technical teams are only helping people register online. Thousands have already logged in and benefited,' he said. The clash has added a fresh flashpoint to AAP-BJP ties in Punjab, where the ruling party has accused the Centre of withholding funds while the BJP has been seeking to expand its footprint by showcasing central welfare schemes in villages.

Punjab to save Rs 50 crore annually as consortium of banks reduce additional 0.05% interest on food credit
Punjab government will save Rs 50 crore annually as the consortium of lender banks, led by State Bank of India (SBI), has agreed to reduce 0.05 per cent additional rate of interest on food credit, winning five-month-long battle against 'unjust disparity', with the banks levying an interest rate of 8.37 per cent on the Centre, but an 8.97 per cent on the state. Punjab was eyeing a waiver on the entire additional interest of 0.60 per cent, but the five-month-long battle yielded the state a 0.05 per cent rebate, saving Rs 50 crore annually. 'It may not sound like a huge amount, but it is like winning a war against injustice. We will save Rs 50 crore. We will keep fighting, and take the matter with the Centre too,' a government officer told The Indian Express. According to officials, during the last fiscal year, ending in March 2025, the Punjab government had a CCL of about Rs 79,000 crore and paid an interest of Rs 6,000 crore. After the procurement, the FCI paid back only Rs 5,400 crore of the Rs 6,000 crore interest, thus leaving the state government to pay an additional Rs 600 crore to the banks. Similarly, in the 2023-24 fiscal, the government paid an interest of Rs 5,500 crore, while it got only Rs 5,000 crore in the recoup, they said. Neighbouring Haryana pays the MSP to the farmers from its consolidated fund, so it does not have to pay interest. 'Punjab and Madhya Pradesh borrow CCL from the banks and have to pay the interest. Haryana can do it as it procures only 100 lakh tons of foodgrains, while Punjab procures 250 lakh tons of rice and wheat every year. Even Madhya Pradesh is contributing more wheat to the central pool than Haryana,' authorities in Punjab claim. Thus, the Punjab government contended that it has to pay an interest of 8.97 per cent to the lead banks, which offer food credit loans to the Centre at an interest of only 8.37 per cent. Citing Article 293 of the Constitution, which deals with the borrowing powers of the States, Punjab stated that it should also get the same rate of interest as the Centre, official sources said. The consortium of banks, however, argued that a state guarantee cannot be compared with the Union guarantee, it is learnt. With Punjab government officials holding five meetings in five months with the consortium of banks, the SBI has now written to the state that it has agreed to reduce the interest rate by 0.05 per cent. Punjab takes an advance to procure wheat and paddy twice a year. While the advance for wheat is about Rs 35,000 crore, it is more in the case of paddy at over Rs 45,000 crore. The advance is credited into the state's account by the banks before the procurement officially starts. At the time of recoup by the Food Corporation of India (FCI), the state only got the actual amount and had to pay Rs 500 crore extra to the banks. From now on, it will pay only Rs 450 crore. 'The Centre should be paying this interest also, as we procure grain for the central pool,' the officer added.
