Tiruchendur Kumbabishekam a success story, says T.N. government

The Hindu08-07-2025
The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday (July 8, 2025) said the successful conduct of the Kumbabishekam of the Tiruchendur Murugan Temple after 16 years on Monday (July 7) was a testament to the efforts taken by the 'Dravidian Model government', led by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, to maintain law and order.
In a statement issued in Chennai, the government said the DMK administration had left its mark through the arrangements made for the smooth conduct of the event.
'Compared to the Kumbh Mela, where many people lost their lives and devotees faced numerous difficulties at railway stations, the Kumbabishekam at Tiruchendur was conducted peacefully. The Chief Minister, Ministers including HR&CE Minister P.K. Sekar Babu, and officials have proved to be excellent organisers who ensured the safety of lakhs of people,' the statement said.
The government added that the Chief Minister had instructed officials to make adequate arrangements, including providing sufficient buses and facilities, to help devotees visit Tiruchendur and return safely.

Chief Minister Stalin wanted to challenge the Waqf (Amendments) Act in SC: MP Wilson

DMK Rajya Sabha Member P. Wilson on Saturday said amendments to the Waqf Act brought about in 1995 were sufficient, and the BJP's decision to form a committee and its actions were 'oppressive'. Speaking at the 'Save Waqf, Save Constitution' panel discussion organised by the All India Muslims Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), he said Chief Minister M.K. Stalin passed a resolution in the Assembly when the Waqf (Amendments) Act, 2025, was introduced in Parliament. 'Only the BJP opposed the resolution and staged a walkout from the Assembly. The BJP has betrayed the Muslim community and the AIADMK has formed an alliance with them. When the Bill was sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee, the DMK appointed two of its MPs, A. Raja and M.M. Abdullah, who travelled across India for over nine months and participated in consultative meetings and opposed the amendments. The committee's objections were given in writing, and we caused a ruckus in Parliament. We debated it for 15 hours, and it was passed early in the morning. We voted against it,' he said. He added that the Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had said that the Waqf Act should be challenged in Supreme Court. 'After it was passed in the Rajya Sabha on April 4 and became an Act on April 5, we filed a case against it on April 7.' Former Madras High Court judge Justice D. Hariparanthaman said the latest Waqf Act amendments should be compared to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act and compared to the rights available to the majority community. 'Section 104 of the Waqf Act which says that anyone can donate to Waqf... has been removed. Now, not even a Muslim can donate but he/she should have been a Muslim for five years. Does HR and CE Act have such a section? A Muslim, Christian, Jain is not prevented from donating to the Mylapore temple. This is the first act that prevents donation. All powers of the Waqf Act are being taken over by the Central government,' he said. R. Vijayasankar, former Editor, Frontline, highlighted the role of the media in spreading hate against Muslims and underlined the lack of representation of Muslims, Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Communities within mainstream media. Advocate A. Arulmozhi, retired IAS officer G. Balachandran, and Rahmathunissa, member, AIMPLB, also participated.

Minister releases book of achievements

1 2 Trichy: Minister for natural resources S Regupathy released a book of achievements about projects implemented in Pudukottai district on Saturday. Speaking to reporters there, he said AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami could only issue a 'book of miseries.' He was responding to questions about Palaniswami's claims that the DMK govt did not begin any new schemes. "Our schemes are new, which emanate from our leader's (chief minister M K Stalin) thoughts. As Palaniswami could not lay claim on them, he is alleging that we are shelving schemes he introduced," he said. Regupathy criticised Palaniswami for asking if BJP is a communal party while justifying his alliance. He said Palaniswami is a liar and has been blabbering in fear of losing. To a question about the possibility of an increase in electoral roll with non-residents of Tamil Nadu, Regupathy said giving voting rights to non-residents is unacceptable. "Tamil Nadu voters have a different view from Bihar voters. There are rights where one should vote. Tamil Nadu will not accept importing voters from other states," he said. DMK will take such issues to the notice of the Election Commission, he added. Regupathy participated in 'Ungaludan Stalin' camps in Pudukottai district. Meanwhile, speaking in Trichy while launching Nalam Kakkum Stalin camp, municipal administrations minister K N Nehru said, "None from DMK alliance would leave; instead, it is people from their (AIADMK-BJP) camp who are approaching us, like OPS. Edappadi Palaniswami has joined hands with the BJP to safeguard himself." Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

DMK MP, MLA hurl abuses at each other

1 2 Theni: A heated exchange between Theni MP Thanga Tamil Selvan and Andipatti MLA A Maharajan, both of DMK, disrupted the launch of 'Nalam Kaakkum Stalin' at a hall in Sakkampatti near Andipatti on Saturday, forcing officials to stop the inaugural ceremony midway. The flashpoint came when Thanga Tamil Selvan got upset that his photo was missing from the event's welcome banner, which featured only the MLA. The MP questioned district collector Ranjeet Singh over the omission. He then turned his ire on MLA Maharajan, accusing him of deliberately excluding him from the arrangements and sidelining the MP's role. In response, Maharajan insisted that only he would distribute the welfare aid cards. The MP attempted to snatch one from the MLA's hand and accused him of using offensive language. The spat escalated into a full-blown argument on stage in front of the officials and the public with both abusing each other. The collector, along with police officials, pacified both of them. Later, the MP and MLA left the welfare distribution ceremony midway, though the camp continued as planned.
