Toddler dies after hours without food; mother blames migraine

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WJW) – A Missouri mother has been arrested and charged in the death of her toddler after investigators say the 1-year-old was not fed for nearly two days and subsequently passed away.
According to a press release from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a division of the Department of Public Safety, the Cape Girardeau Police Department and the MSHP Division of Drug and Crime Control began the investigation into the suspicious death of a one-year-old child.

According to the release, 21-year-old Alyssa Wehmeyer was arrested on March 3 after it was determined that the child suffered from severe malnutrition and neglect, resulting in the child's death.
According to PEOPLE, a warrant arrest document showed that Wehmeyer is accused of not feeding the child for about 43 hours.
A probable cause affidavit also confirmed that an autopsy determined that the child's cause of death was dehydration, according to PEOPLE.
According to PEOPLE, the documents showed that it was determined the child had been left unattended in their crib for almost 19 hours.
Police chase into small, local village ends in deadly crash
According to PEOPLE, the probable cause affidavit stated Wehmeyer blamed the neglect on the fact that she had a migraine, had taken three Excedrin and had taken a nap.
Wehmeyer was taken to the Scott County Jail and then officially charged with one count of abuse or neglect of a child resulting in death on Tuesday, according to the release.
Wehmeyer is currently being held on a $100,000 cash bond.

The driver, Chineda Valcin, 29, was able to escape the vehicle, and another adult, Medgine Louis, 24, and a 5-year-old child were rescued before the car sank. However, a 27-year-old woman, identified as Kelita Alfred, and a 3-year-old child were pulled from the vehicle and sent to a Columbus hospital, where they were later pronounced dead, the OSHP said. Per the OSHP, Valcin was driving a 2016 Jeep Cherokee when "she traveled off the right side of the roadway, striking a ditch and coming to rest in a retention pond" around 6:30 p.m. local time. Footage released by WSYX shows police officers running across a field to rescue the individuals trapped in the vehicle in the pond. Screams can be heard in the background, while one person shouted, 'I need another life jacket!' Multiple fire departments, along with A2B Towing and Recovery, also responded to the scene to help with the rescue and assist the individuals recovered, the WJPD said. The two surviving adults were not injured, while the 5-year-old child suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Nationwide Children's Hospital for care, according to the OSHP. She appeared to be wearing a disguise, attempting to blend in with other shoppers. But a police report filed on May 23 told a different story. The manager told police she discovered the theft while sorting paperwork and realized her employees had not reported the incident. The suspect was identified in the report as Paula Andrea Lopez-Correa, a Virginia woman wanted in multiple states. She is accused of stealing from Ulta Beauty locations across multiple states, racking up a total of more than $81,000 in losses, according to the police report. According to the store's loss prevention team, Lopez-Correa has used a black Kia Soul in some of the thefts. The car has a Virginia license plate number TFK5214. Nationwide recall on jerky and snack sticks Police said they searched city cameras for that plate number but found no matches. As of now, Lopez-Correa remains at large. Fox 8 reached out to Ulta Beauty's corporate office for comment but did not receive a response. Anyone with information about Paula Andrea Lopez-Correa is urged to contact Mayfield Heights police.
