Off to Portugal!

Listen to article Portugal is the new green pasture for all those who want to abandon Pakistan, but at the altar of its national exchequer. The revelation from a cabinet minister that hordes of bureaucrats and who's who are acquiring citizenship of the southern European country on the Iberian Peninsula is not shocking. Pakistan is infected with brain drain, and all those who feel that they are lacking in social mobility despite possessing the necessary talent and education are on their way out. The point, nonetheless, here under debate is that how come the civil servants within their ''lawful'' income, hardly enough to make ends meet, afford the luxury of investing overseas in real estate, and bid adieu to their homeland without any retribution. That is tantamount to assured corruption and failure of the system to check the black sheep for their misdeeds. Defence Minister Khawaja Asif's spilling the beans should be read in conjunction with the Panama and Dubai Leaks, wherein several of his own party stalwarts and those of the PPP were named for possessing offshore properties. So is the case with hundreds of former military officers, bankers, politicians and, of course, judicial officers. It is a documented fact in the annals of parliament that, at least, 22,000 bureaucrats hold dual nationality in contravention of the law of the land. An investigative OCCRP report claimed that more than 17,000 Pakistani nationals owned some 23,000 residential properties in Dubai. This messy state of affairs is a blot on governance and testifies that robbing the exchequer is a new-normal, otherwise it is next to impossible to stash money in foreign accounts with impunity. Laws and legislations are merely for window-dressing, and there is no prosecution, per se. This is a crime against a nation which is reeling under abject poverty and whose 55 per cent populace is devoid of basic civic amenities such as health and education. One hopes this disclosure from the pinnacle in power will lead to some stringent action, and a genuine phase of accountability will see the light of the day.

FIA unearths 'irrefutable' evidence against Bahria Town: Tarar

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar on Wednesday said the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has recovered 'irrefutable evidence' of corruption by Bahria Town during an operation. The minister informed the media that the FIA had discovered important documents during the raid, which was undertaken in accordance with the law. 'Those documents are irrefutable evidence of Bahria Town's corruption. This evidence exposed a massive money laundering operation,' the minister stressed. He added that the Safari Hospital was used as a front office to hide the evidence. Tarar said the FIA team found Bahria Town staff burning the record, but a significant portion has been recovered. He questioned why the record needed to be burned if there was nothing illegal. This evidence, he contended, is related to the network of Hundi, Hawala and money laundering. Tarar said that using the hospital as a front office and transporting sensitive documents and cash through ambulances is not an ordinary thing. Tarar further said the FIA is continuing its investigation and has traced the absconders associated with this issue.

‘FIA has proof of Rs1.12bn money-laundering linked to Bahria Town': Tarar

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information Attaullah Tarar has revealed that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has unearthed undeniable evidence of Rs1.12 billion worth of money laundering linked to Bahria Town and its owner Malik Riaz. Speaking in an exclusive briefing, Tarar said the operation was part of an ongoing investigation into illegal financial networks involving hundi, hawala, and money laundering. According to the minister, FIA's latest action has exposed a well-organised network through which money was being illegally transferred abroad. 'The evidence collected during the raid is sufficient to expose the entire operation,' Tarar stated. He revealed that Safari Hospital—operated under Bahria Town—was being used as a front office to hide financial records and cash. 'Even ambulances were used to secretly move sensitive documents and money,' he added. Bahria Town employees allegedly attempted to destroy evidence, with some records already lost, but most have been secured by FIA. Tarar disclosed that a 'Colonel Khalil', responsible for managing Bahria Town operations, is currently in FIA custody. Two individuals, Imran and Qaiser, were allegedly operating the hundi-hawala network, with confirmed links to Bahria Town's CFO and Director Finance. He assured that residents of Bahria Town have nothing to fear, as the crackdown is specifically targeted at those involved in money laundering and illegal financial transactions. 'This is not a minor issue—using a hospital and ambulances for criminal financial activities reflects the extent of this network,' Tarar emphasised. The investigation is progressing rapidly, with authorities having identified the locations of several suspects, and complete evidence has been gathered against them. Tarar urged the accused to surrender before the law, as the legal process will now take its course. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
