Women's EURO 2025: Lauren James' return boosts England ahead of final against Spain
England forward Lauren James has recovered from injury in time for the final of the Women's European Championship against World Cup winner Spain on Sunday. James had to come off at halftime in England's semifinal victory over Italy on Tuesday with an ankle problem and was seen applying ice to her injury during the match. However, the Chelsea player trained on Saturday with the rest of the Lionesses. 'We had 23 players on the pitch today and everyone came through,' England coach Sarina Wiegman said on the eve of the final. ALSO READ | Spain's style up against England's will in title clash 'So if everyone recovers well, then we have 23 players available for tomorrow. I think we have many players that can impact, and we know that she can have an impact too, so that'd be nice,' she added. James was a major doubt even before the tournament after a hamstring injury ended her season in April. But the 23-year-old has started all five of England's games at Euro 2025 and has been a continuous threat. James scored twice in the 4-0 win over the Netherlands in the second group-stage match. 'I think we have a team of talented players,' England captain Leah Williamson said. 'Lauren brings something slightly obviously having that available is a best-case scenario for us.' England is the defending champion but lost to Spain in the World Cup final in 2023.

Xavi Hernandez and Pep Guardiola's applications were not genuine: AIFF
A day after its top official claimed that World Cup-winning Spanish great Xavi Hernandez was among the applicants for India football coach 's position, the All India Football Federation said that the e-mail received in his name was found to be "not genuine" and three others have been short-listed for the job. The AIFF did not reveal the names in the pruned list but it is widely believed that Khalid Jamil , currently the head coach of Indian Super League side Jamshedpur FC, is the front-runner for the post left vacant by Spaniard Manolo Marquez . The IM Vijayan-headed Technical Committee, it is learnt, has also kept Englishman Stephen Constantine , who has previously coached India, and Slovakia's Stefan Tarkovic in the short-list. Live Events Constantine has coached the Indian team in two phases earlier, while Tarkovic is the most decorated among the shortlisted candidates having managed Slovakia during the 2020 Euro Championship, where his team beat a fancied Poland which had Bayern Munich legend Robert Lewandowski in its ranks. "Following comprehensive discussions and a rigorous selection process, 10 candidates were selected for the committee to review, following which, the TC shortlisted three," the release also stated. "Given the immediate needs of the national team, it is advisable to recommend three coaches from the short-listed pool for final consideration," former India skipper Vijayan was quoted as saying in the release. "Other prominent applicants, many of whom are highly qualified international coaches, will be taken into account for long-term strategic roles in the future," he added. National Team Director Subrata Paul, also a former India skipper, spoke about preference being given to those with some understanding of Indian football . "It is a very important moment for Indian football, and we are committed to appointing a coach who not only brings technical expertise but also understands the unique style, culture, and dynamics of Indian and Asian football. "We believe such a coach will be able to connect with our players quickly and effectively," Paul stated.

Kapil Dev's Decisive Verdict As Shubman Gill's India Concede Humiliating Record: "He Will Commit Mistakes..."
Legendary cricketer Kapil Dev on Saturday said the England series will serve as a valuable learning experience for young India skipper Shubman Gill and urged critics to give him some time to grow into the leadership role. Gill was named captain ahead of the ongoing five-Test series against England and led the side to a historic win at Birmingham, but India are down 1-2 in the series and they are staring down the barrel in the fourth Test at Manchester. "Give him time. This is his first series, he will commit mistakes and there will be many positives over the period of time, he will learn. There is no problem if he is learning. There will be mistakes, but he is learning from his mistakes, that is very important," Kapil, who is the president of PGTI, said on the sidelines of the PGTI Schedule announcement for the second half of 2025. Gill's India saw England pile up the highest-ever Test total scored at Old Trafford, Manchester during the fourth Test of the series. England made a mammoth first innings score of 669, with Joe Root and Ben Stokes slamming tons. "This is a young team, they are getting the opportunity to play and in the coming days these players will win. It is just a new team. Any new team in the world takes time to adjust. Gill is a new captain, and he will learn a lot and I think this series will be a learning step." Kapil also weighed in on India's pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who had opted to play only three of the five Tests in the series to manage his workload, given his injury-prone past. "I think everybody is different. Times have changed, bodies are different. They are working differently. It is difficult to judge. Yes he is one of the fast bowlers we have but his action is so awkward and it is difficult to sustain," the 1983 World Cup winning captain said. "We didn't think he will be able to play this far because he takes too much stress on the body. But still he is delivering to the Indian team. So hats off to him." On debutant pacer Anshul Kamboj, who returned figures of 18-1-89-1 in the ongoing fourth Test, Kapil said it was unfair to expect miracles in a player's first outing. "What do you expect from a debutant, that he should take 10 wickets? You have to assess his potential. If he's good enough, he will bounce back. Everyone is nervous when playing their first game. The result may not be ideal, but I believe the ability is there, and that's more important," he said. Asked to comment on England captain Ben Stokes, Kapil said he ranks Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja higher than the Englishman. "I don't want to compare. Stokes is a good all-rounder, but I still feel Jadeja is ahead. He is performing far better," Kapil said.
