Is this the beginning of the end for WWE's John Cena heel run?

Yahoo29-06-2025
Are we looking at the end of the John Cena heel run? Given what a surprise the big turn was in the first place (I still don't think a single person saw it coming), it's interesting how many people are now confidently predicting exactly how and when it will end. And to be honest, they probably have good reason to be confident.
One thing is for sure: After yesterday's WWE Night of Champions event, we are heading for a John Cena vs. Cody Rhodes rematch at this year's SummerSlam. That was effectively confirmed the second that Rhodes defeated Randy Orton to become King of the Ring, before taking to the mic to make his intentions clear: 'At SummerSlam,' Rhodes declared, 'I will get my ball back.' Expect an official match graphic to appear on the weekly shows any minute now.

Will 'The Quarterback' triumph in New Jersey? Given the current status of play, he has to be a serious favorite this time around. If nothing else, the fact that the clock is ticking down on John Cena's retirement tour — according to the man himself, he has 15 dates left — makes a Rhodes victory more likely. Assuming, that is, the whole thing about Cena retiring as champion is a ploy to get heat rather than the genuine creative plan all along…
There are other things in Cody's favor. As he's the one who is sticking around to carry the company, a defeat would likely inflict serious damage on his brand — particularly after he went through the effort of winning King of the Ring to earn the title shot. Then there's the fact that Cena has been presented as very much beatable. We saw Saturday night how CM Punk had the champion pinned to rights — albeit after a ref bump — suggesting, once again, that it's the dirty tricks that keep Cena on top.

Combine all of those factors and you can see why the widespread expectation is this year's SummerSlam will culminate in a reversal of what happened at WrestleMania 41. — i.e. 'The American Nightmare' getting his revenge over the dastardly trio of Cena, Travis Scott and The Rock, who conspired to screw him over in Las Vegas. (Who knows, perhaps the final member of that alliance will actually show up this time…)
So where does that leave the Cena heel turn? In normal times, you'd assume it would be the moment to call time on the project. After all, if a babyface is at their most powerful during the chase, the heel is never weaker than when they finally get their just desserts. Whatever you might think of his work ethic, there's a reason that Roman Reigns took a break after losing his title at WrestleMania XL, for example.
If this dark Cena had succeeded in getting some genuine heat from the fans in the first place, there might be some merit in having him sticking around to carry on the act. That way, the crowds could get some cathartic relief by jeering the downfall of his whole 'ruin wrestling' shtick. But we've seen time and again how the heel act has struggled to land in the first place: The crowds just don't buy it.
Then there's the fact that WWE has seemingly been teasing that Cena might be regretting his heel turn (in kayfabe at least) for a while now. We saw that again last night when 'The Champ' thought twice about clobbering CM Punk with the WWE Universal Championship last night — suggesting, not for the first time, that he feels conflicted about some of these underhand tactics.

If it was a one-off, you could write it off as a coincidence. But given we had similar teases at WWE Backlash and Money in the Bank, too, you have to assume it's deliberate. As for how you actually execute the big change, your guess is as good as mine. Although given that the audiences have never really believed Cena as the soulless heel, WWE will presumably face much less resistance in turning him face than they did with more established bad guys like Roman Reigns or Brock Lesnar. Don't be surprised if Cena flips as quickly as he did back at Elimination Chamber.
No matter how they get there, though, you sense they have to do it. With just 13 scheduled Cena appearances after SummerSlam — including three PLEs and a rumored Saturday Night's Main Event in Boston — WWE is running out of time to create those magic moments when you have a whole arena cheering their man to the rafters. In other words, the thing we all expected to see from the moment that Cena announced his retirement tour in the first place.
After a tricky few months, you have to assume that remains the end-game. Forget about 'ruining wrestling' and retiring with the belt as 'the last true champion': The far bigger prize is to walk out with those crowds behind you. Surely even "The Final Boss" can see the wisdom in that?

The Jonas Brothers tour and their nightly surprise guests — including Demi Lovato, Jesse McCartney and Hanson — are making millennials' nostalgia dreams come true

The Greetings From Your Hometown tour kicked off on Aug. 10. It's a warm summer night. You've managed to score a coveted ticket to the Jonas Brothers concert, where you're singing at the top of your lungs about scorching temperatures, outselling Kelly Clarkson and getting bitten by the love bug. Maybe you've bought some JoBros merch too. A tote bag. A 'JB' dad hat. A graphic tee with the bros smoldering at the camera. The fangirl in you has been unleashed in a way that only a trio of brothers from New Jersey could unleash it. It feels like 2008 all over again, only it's not. It's August 2025. Nick, Joe and Kevin Jonas of the Jonas Brothers kicked off their JONAS20: Greetings From Your Hometown tour on Aug. 10. In just six shows, they've already served up what can only be described as a millennial dream come true. In addition to performing their earlier hits, the brothers have already invited a handful of bands and artists who were popular in the aughts to join them onstage as surprise guests at each tour stop. Aughts-era pop-rock bands Boys Like Girls and the All-American Rejects were also tapped as opening acts for select dates. Demi Lovato, perhaps the most notable guest so far, was greeted by ear-shattering shrieks from millennial fans when she strutted onto the MetLife Stadium stage on the opening night of the tour. Lovato performed two Camp Rock-era duets, 'This Is Me' and 'I Wouldn't Change a Thing' with Joe, whom she dated in 2010. For Lovato, who struggled with sobriety and her mental health at the height of her Disney stardom, taking the stage with the brothers was a 'healing' experience. 'It was so healing for me too,' she said on the Chicks in the Office podcast last week. 'You know, we've been through so much together, all of us, the Jonas Brothers and I.' The 'Fast' pop star wasn't the only nostalgia-inducing guest that night — Jesse McCartney serenaded millennials with his Disney hit 'Beautiful Soul,' and Switchfoot performed their 2003 song 'Meant to Live,' along with the JoBro track 'Hold On.' The whole Jonas family — mom Denise Jonas, dad Kevin Jonas Sr., brother Franklin Jonas, Kevin's wife, Danielle, and their daughters, Valentina and Alena — also took the stage to sing 'When You Look Me in the Eyes' to emotionally close out the first show of the tour. Two days later, on Aug. 12, the boys descended upon Bristow, Va., where they brought out pop-punk phenoms All Time Low to perform their 2007 single 'Dear Maria, Count Me In.' For their Camden, N.J., show on Aug. 14, the Jonas Brothers tapped the Click Five, the band they actually opened for 20 years ago, to rock out to their 2005 hit 'Just the Girl' onstage. Hanson, a fellow iconic trio of singing brothers, played a rendition of their song 'MMMBop' with Nick, Joe and Kevin during their Virginia Beach tour stop on Aug. 15. Sunday night's show in Hershey, Pa., was filled with more aughts-era greatness. Pulling on the heartstrings of millennial Warped Tour attendees everywhere, the brothers brought out Cartel to perform their 2005 single 'Say Anything (Else).' Rounding out the guest appearances for the Aug. 17 show was none other than Hoobastank, who performed their 2003 ballad 'The Reason.' On Monday night in Bethel, N.Y., Boys Like Girls made their debut as a Greetings From Your Hometown tour opener. The pop-punk band played several tracks from their 2006 and 2009 albums, including 'The Great Escape,' 'Hero/Heroine' and 'Two Is Better Than One.' Troves of millennial fans have flocked to social media to gush about all the nostalgic appearances so far. One fan commented on a TikTok video, 'It's like Joe is going through my old iPod,' while another wrote, 'I fear a big portion of the crowds are going to be too young to appreciate these guests. So good for us 30-something's lol.' Added one more fan, 'Switchfoot and now Cartel??? I didn't recognize your game Jonas Bros.' The Greetings From Your Hometown tour hits different for those of us who grew up with the Jonas Brothers. It's a celebration of our childhood — of the music that dominated our iTunes libraries and soundtracked our adolescence. Millennials, it seems, are in agreement: There's comfort in knowing that these bands and artists are still here and still down to rock out with us after all this time. Solve the daily Crossword

Former No. 1 pick, five-time All-Star John Wall announces his retirement from basketball

One of the fastest and most electrifying players with the ball in his hands the league has seen, John Wall officially announced his retirement after 11 NBA seasons. Wall was the No. 1 pick of the Washington Wizards in 2010 out of Kentucky. He Dougied his way to 16.4 points and 8.3 assists a game as a rookie, making First Team All-Rookie (he was second in Rookie of the Year voting to Blake Griffin). Wall played nine seasons for the Wizards and is a franchise legend, a lightning-fast player end-to-end with the ball in his hands but able to play under control at that speed. He averaged 19 points and 9.2 assists a game in that stretch for Washington, making five All-Star teams, one All-Defensive team, and he was All-NBA in his peak season of 2017 when he averaged 23.1 points a game. In 2019, Wall suffered a torn Achilles and was never the same after that. He missed a full season, then came back with stints with the Rockets (he was traded to them for Russell Westbrook) and Clippers, and in Los Angeles, he played well off the bench when healthy (but he only played 34 games for them). However, his impact was never quite the same after the injury. The Wall game I most remember came during the lockout in 2011, when a number of NBA players got together at The Pyramid on the Campus of Long Beach State (about a nice 3-iron shot from my front door) for an exhibition game. In that free-flowing, pickup-style game, the speed and athleticism of Wall overshadowed everyone else on the court. He was dynamic and one of the most entertaining players the league has ever seen.

'This Reminds Me Of What Women Did In The 50s': Kim Kardashian Wore Her Divisive 'Face Shapewear' With A Very Risqué Outfit On A Flight, And People Have Thoughts

Last month, Kim Kardashian announced the release of her brand Skims's new 'face shapewear.' The $48 'Seamless Sculpt Face Wrap' has been marketed on the Skims website as a 'must-have face wrap,' while Kim herself described it as a 'necessity.' She said, 'It just snatches your little chinny chin chin… It's super comfortable to wear at night or just around the house.' Related: The face wrap sparked heavy backlash, with several people accusing Kim of profiting from women's insecurities. But regardless, Kim has continued to take pride in the Skims product, recently sharing a bunch of photos of herself modeling the face wrap on a recent flight. This week, Kim posted pictures of herself, her sister Khloé Kardashian, and their close friend La La Anthony each wearing the garment while posing on a private jet. Related: Naturally, some people in the comments raised their eyebrows over the pics. 'love kimmy but these face wraps are useless unless you recently had facial surgery,' one person said, while another wrote, 'Does this include your doctors too ? We know this doesn't work ladies.' Related: 'That don't work,' someone echoed, while one more user said, 'This reminds me of what women did in the 50s.' However, it wasn't just the face wraps that caught fans' attention. Several users were quick to notice Kim's barely-there outfit, which included a pair of sheer Yves Saint Laurent tights, a see-through bodysuit, and a fur coat over the top. In one of the photos, Kim censored her nipples as she pulled her coat back to showcase the risqué bodysuit. Related: Personally, I couldn't help but be reminded of Bianca Censori — aka Kim's ex-husband Kanye 'Ye' West's wife — when I saw the fit. Let us know what you think in the comments.
