ECRL extension from KB to Thai border via Rantau Panjang under study, says Kelantan deputy MB
Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan said the proposal is seen as relevant as the Malaysian and Thai governments have agreed to revive the existing railway line between Pasir Mas and Sungai Golok under Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) to reconnect the railway network between the two countries.
He said the Kelantan government is currently proposing that the ECRL line be extended to Rantau Panjang in Pasir Mas from Kota Bharu and not to the original line in Tumpat.
'However, it is still under study by MRL and the Ministry of Transport to extend the ECRL line from Kota Bharu to Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas,' he said.
He said this when replying to a supplementary question by Mohd Adanan Hassan (PAS-Kelaboran) regarding the state government's efforts to submit a proposal to implement the ECRL to the original alignment, which is Tumpat, at the State Legislative Assembly sitting in Kota Darulnaim Complex today.
Earlier, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said his ministry was examining a proposal to extend the ECRL route from Kota Bharu to Rantau Panjang, Pasir Mas in Kelantan to strengthen the connection network with Thailand.
In a similar development, Mohamed Fadzli said the state government had also drawn up a strategic plan to ensure that development around the ECRL project alignment could be fully utilised, especially in the manufacturing sector which has the potential to boost the economy in the state.
'Among the main plans currently being implemented is the development based on Cargo Oriented Development (COD) at Pasir Puteh Station, which is seen to be able to attract not only private and foreign investments, but will also generate downstream economic chains such as transportation services, packaging and raw material supply.
'In addition, the development based on Transit Oriented Development (TOD) at Tunjong Station, Kota Bharu is seen to be able to revive Tunjong as a new township and create an economic ecosystem that is balanced between people's mobility, job opportunities and quality of life,' he said.
The ECRL project is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2026 and train services for the Kota Bharu to Gombak, Selangor route will be operational by January 2027, while the second line from Gombak to Port Klang is expected to be completed a year later. — Bernama

What is Anwar about to reveal? Malaysians told to ‘wait a little' for extraordinary news
KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has again teased an upcoming announcement described as an 'extraordinary appreciation' for the people of Malaysia. On his social media pages, Anwar posted a video of a campaign speech in which he makes an electoral pledge. 'I repeat: When we win the general election today, I will announce…' he says in the video, which is intentionally cut off at that point. This was followed by a song excerpt asking Malaysians to 'wait a little' for the announcement that is scheduled for 10.30am. Last week, Anwar shared a poster bearing the phrases 'Akan datang' (coming soon) and 'Suatu penghargaan luar biasa untuk rakyat Malaysia' (an extraordinary appreciation for the people of Malaysia). The poster also carried the slogan 'Bersama Malaysiaku' (with my Malaysia), which has been used in recent government communications. The lack of details has fuelled speculation that the message could relate to economic aid, new benefits, or a policy initiative ahead of National Day. There is also speculation that it could be related to the government's RON95 subsidy rationalisation.

Ringgit finds footing as US dollar stumbles, hope rises for softer tariffs
KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 — The ringgit edged higher against the US dollar in early trade, driven by cautious market sentiment ahead of the August 1 tariff deadline. At 8.03am, the ringgit rose to 4.2195/2375 against the greenback, compared with Tuesday's close of 4.2300/2370. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit is expected to trade within the RM4.22 to RM4.24 range today, as investors remain guarded over the tariff outlook. Meanwhile, SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said the ringgit is opening stronger today as macro crosswinds begin to tilt in its favour, offering a reprieve after weeks of tariff tension and global uncertainty. He said the US dollar was stumbling, weighed down by falling Treasury yields and growing concerns over domestic fallout from Donald Trump's hardline trade stance. He added that the ringgit's strength this morning is not just a fluke bounce but a measured response to a shifting macro narrative. 'A softer dollar, revived trade diplomacy, hope for tariff relief, and a US Federal Reserve under fire have combined to open a temporary window for emerging market currencies. For the ringgit, that window is letting in a welcome breeze,' he told Bernama. Innes said crucially for the ringgit, there is still hope that Malaysia could strike its own deal with Washington to avoid the full weight of the upcoming tariff hike. He noted that Malaysian negotiators were said to be pushing for a lower tariff, targeting a range of 15–20 per cent compared with the proposed 25 per cent, broadly in line with what has been offered to regional peers such as Vietnam and Indonesia. 'The fact that talks are ongoing is enough to support the ringgit, as markets see it as a sign that Malaysia may avoid the harshest penalties,' Innes said. At the opening, the ringgit was mostly weaker against a basket of major currencies. It slipped against the Japanese yen to 2.8767/8891 from 2.8690/8739, and eased versus the euro to 4.9528/9740 from 4.9512/9594. However, the ringgit was slightly higher against the British pound, rising to 5.7052/7295 from 5.7088/7183 at Tuesday's close. The local note was mostly firmer against regional peers. It rose vis-à-vis the Singapore dollar to 3.3001/3144 from 3.3011/3071, and appreciated against the Indonesian rupiah to 258.5/259.7 from 259.1/259.7. It also inched higher against the Philippine peso to 7.39/7.43 from 7.41/7.43. However, the ringgit fell against the Thai baht to 13.1138/1767 from 13.0899/1172. — Bernama
