Are the Broad Street Bullies coming back? Flyers go big at the NHL draft

NBC Sports30-06-2025
By the time the Philadelphia Flyers are legitimate contenders again a few years down the road, they could have a lineup that makes the 1970s Broad Street Bullies proud.
Six of their nine selections in the NHL draft stand 6-foot-3 or taller, including first-rounders Porter Martone and Jack Nesbitt. They overlooked smaller talent to get a hulking winger in Martone at No. 6 and traded up for Nesbitt, a 6-5 center, with the 12th pick.
'It's a nice bonus that they're both tall and will bring us size, as well,' general manager Daniel Briere said. 'It just kind of worked out that way. It wasn't a plan that we had in mind going into the draft that we wanted to get bigger. It just happened that way.'
Philadelphia's second-rounders were 6-6, 232-pound defenseman Carter Amico and a trio of nice-sized forwards: Jack Murtagh, Shane Vansaghi and Matthew Gard. Murtagh described himself as 'a high-end workhorse.'
Their second fifth-round pick, Luke Vlooswyk, called himself 'a big defensive, defenseman.' He said Gard, a teammate with the Western Hockey League's Red Deer Rebels, is 'a big kid like me.'
Bulking up the prospect pool makes sense for the Flyers, who have a lot of smaller talent in the system, from budding star Matvei Michkov already on the roster to 2024 first-rounder Jett Luchanko, who played four games for them last season. They also just traded for 6-foot center Trevor Zegras and could use some size in their not-too-distant future.
Bloodlines
After William Horcoff, whose dad Shawn spent 15 seasons in the NHL, went 24th to Pittsburgh in the first round, Day 2 of the draft was full of the sons and nephews of retired players hearing their names called.
It started with Seattle trading up to get Blake Fiddler, son of Vernon, early in the second round. Eric Nilson, son of Marcus, went a handful of picks later to Anaheim.
There were more familiar names picked in the third round: Artyom Gonchar, nephew of 2009 Stanley Cup champion Sergei Gonchar, to the New York Rangers, and Blake Vanek, son of Thomas, to Ottawa.
Same with the penultimate pick of the draft, Aidan Park, a Southern California native and nephew of Richard Park, who went on stage in a hoodie and shorts after being taken by Edmonton.
Italian history
After Simon Wang became the highest-ranked China-born NHL draft pick when San Jose chose him at No. 33, Matous Jan Kucharcik made some Italian hockey history.
Taken by Buffalo 103rd, Kucharcik is a Czech national but became the fourth player born in Italy to be selected.
Seventeen birth countries were represented among the 224 picks, the most in 21 years. The 88 from Canada are the most since 2016.

Have Your Say: Datsyuk's Rookie Season

Detroit legend Pavel Datsyuk reflects on rookie season in recent interview. Pavel Datsyuk: Red Wings Rookie Season Felt Like Arriving On A "Crazy Planet" It's hard to believe nowadays that the legendary 2001-02 Detroit Red Wings roster featured an astounding 10 future Hall of Fame players, a feat that we'll likely never witness again in the modern NHL. Pavel Datsyuk recently reflected on his 2001-02 rookie season with the Detroit Red Wings, describing it as feeling like he had landed on a "crazy planet" due to the overwhelming talent and star power around him, including 10 future Hall of Famers and legendary coach Scotty Bowman. Despite not speaking English and being surrounded by NHL icons, Datsyuk quietly absorbed everything, aided by fellow Russians Igor Larionov and Sergei Fedorov. His dedication and talent quickly made him a key player, eventually earning him three Selke Trophies and a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2024 as the 10th inductee from that iconic Red Wings team. Peterborough Petes Sign Leon Kolarik; Import Roster Complete

The Peterborough Petes have finalized their import roster for the upcoming 2025-26 season. The club will have three brand new imports who will get their first taste of CHL action in just a few weeks. And interestingly enough, all three are eligible for the 2026 NHL Draft. On Aug. 7, the Petes organization announced the signing of Austrian forward Leon Kolarik to an OHL Standard Player Agreement. Peterborough drafted him in the second round (63rd overall) in the 2025 CHL Import Draft. He joins fellow European skaters Adam Novotny and Yanis Lutz, who both signed with the team back in July. 'We're very happy to be able to add Leon Kolarik to our team. Leon is a player who brings experience playing at the highest professional level in Austria. We believe that his game is a great fit for the OHL, and we look forward to having him join our group,' said Peterborough Petes GM Michael Oke via the team's press release. Kolarik, 17, spent the majority of last season playing in the AlpsHL, a league that is focused on developing young players featuring teams from Austria, Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia. In 36 games for the RB Hockey Juniors, he recorded 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists), finishing second on the team in scoring, while being one of the youngest players on the team. Adam Novotny, Projected Top Prospect In The 2026 NHL Draft, Signs With Peterborough Petes Last season, one of the OHL's top performers came from the 2024 CHL Import Draft. Ilya Protas was selected third overall by the Windsor Spitfires. He formed an unstoppable duo with Liam Greentree, scoring 50 goals and 124 points in the regular season. Like many of these young European players, Kolarik is well-traveled, having played in multiple leagues and several international tournaments. The 5-foot-11 forward led the EC Salzburg U20 organization in goals (8) and points (14) in the Austria U20 league playoffs, en route to a championship victory. Back home in Austria, his play stood out, and he earned seven games playing for EC Salzburg in the ICEHL, which is the top-tier league in Austria. He recorded one goal and two assists in those games and gained valuable experience playing against older competition. 'Having spent extensive time in Europe ahead of the Import Draft with Coach (Rob) Wilson, we had already identified Leon as a highly skilled and competitive player. We feel his skillset and drive will contribute well with our new look team, while we also work to continue his development ahead of the 2026 NHL Draft,' said Petes Director of Player Personnel and Assistant Coach Patrick O'Connor. Peterborough Petes Recruit Swiss Forward Yanis Lutz For The Upcoming Season The Peterborough Petes have signed a second import player this summer, leaving them with one remaining spot to recruit another European player for the 2025-26 season. In international competition last year, Kolarik suited up for Austria's team at the 2025 IIHF U20 Division 1 A World Championship. He recorded four assists in five games, winning a silver medal at the event and coming oh so close to helping his country earn promotion to the top U20 division. Additionally, the Wien, Austria, native was his country's top producer (7 points in 5 games) at the 2025 IIHF U18 Division 1 A World Championship. Unfortunately, that event ended in immense disappointment for him and his nation, as they finished last and were relegated to Division 1 B.
