Viral video: 'Language warrior' demands SBI employee to speak in Kannada, she says ‘No'

In the video, the man recording the video says, 'This is Karnataka, ma'am.' The woman replies, 'This is India.' She continues, 'I will not speak Kannada first,' adding that her mother tongue is Hindi.

In another video, the woman is seen speaking in Kannada with the help of her colleagues. She says, 'If I have hurt anyone, I sincerely apologise. I will try to cooperate and conduct my business in Kannada going forward.'
The language row erupted with a post that warned "outsiders in Bengaluru" to learn the language. Following this, people flooded social media with numerous opinionated reactions.
While some spoke in favour of speaking Kannada in Karnataka, others argued it's not possible for people to learn various languages spoken in different corners of India. The row also sparked a war of words about North India and South India on social media.

SC cancels Darshan's bail; actor, main accused held
Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa was arrested in Bengaluru on Thursday, just hours after the Supreme Court cancelled the bail granted to him by the Karnataka high court in the Renukaswamy murder case. Police took him into custody near his Hosakerehalli residence soon after he returned to the city from an outstation trip. According to police, Gowda was picked up earlier in the day by the Annapoorneshwari Nagar police. Pradoosh S Rao, Lakshman M, and Nagaraj are among those detained. While cancelling the bail to the actor, a bench of justices JB Pardiwala and R Mahadevan said, 'Granting leniency to such persons despite grave charges of conspiracy and murder sends the wrong message to society and undermines public confidence in the justice system.' In a democracy governed by the rule of law, the bench said, 'no individual is exempt from legal accountability by virtue of status or social capital'. In the present case, it said, 'By treating A2's (Darshan) stature as a mitigating factor, the high court committed a manifest perversity in the exercise of its discretion, thereby warranting cancellation of bail.' Police officers said a copy of the Supreme Court order was submitted to the trial court to secure arrest warrants for all the accused before their remand to judicial custody. The order follows a special leave petition filed by the state government challenging the high court's decision in December 2024 to grant bail to the accused. Darshan, who had been away when news of the court's decision reached him, was contacted by police and asked to appear before investigators. He complied, arriving in a luxury SUV before switching to another vehicle to avoid the media assembled outside his apartment. He entered the premises through the back door. The murder case, began with Darshan's arrest in June 2024. Police allege he orchestrated the killing of Renukaswamy, a resident of Chitradurga, after the victim allegedly stalked and abused Gowda on social media. The actor was detained on June 11, 2024, in Mysuru while filming The Devil and was held in custody for 131 days. He was released on interim bail in October and granted regular bail in December. With the latest court order, Darshan is expected to be shifted to the Ballari Central Prison. He was previously housed there after being moved from the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison when images emerged of him smoking and mingling with high-profile inmates. Following that episode, Ballari prison authorities heightened security measures, including raising the perimeter wall to 25 feet and preparing a secure cell. The measures were taken after fans breached prison boundaries during his earlier detention, police officers said. The Supreme Court's decision comes a day before the scheduled release of the first song from The Devil. The film's team had announced on August 10 that the track 'Idre Nemdiyaag Irbek' (You should live in peace) would be released on Independence Day morning, an event now likely to be overshadowed by the arrest. For Renukaswamy's family, Thursday's ruling was a moment of relief. His father, Shivanagouda, welcomed the decision. 'Darshan's bail has been cancelled. There is an order to arrest him. This brings our faith back…The Supreme Court order reinstates the belief that no one can escape the law,' he said. Chief minister Siddaramaiah's legal advisor AS Ponnanna said the verdict would strengthen the prosecution's case. 'We had feared that the investigation would be hampered because Darshan was out on bail. There was a possibility that he could influence the witnesses while he was out. However, now all these challenges will be resolved with the order given by the Supreme Court,' he said. Soon after the court's order was received on Thursday morning, senior police officials briefed home minister G Parameshwara at the Vidhana Soudha. 'The law is the same for everyone. No one is above the law in the country. Everyone should respect the law of the land. The accused have the opportunity to fight for justice further, and that is also allowed by the law,' Parameshwara said.

Bombay High Court to hear plea alleging threats to north Indians by Raj Thackeray, MNS
A criminal writ petition has been filed on Thursday in the Bombay High Court against the Maharashtra government, the Mumbai Commissioner of Police, the Election Commission, and MNS chief Raj Thackeray. The petition filed by Sunil Shukla, national president of the Uttar Bhartiya Vikas Sena, a political party, alleges that he and the north Indian community in Maharashtra have been subjected to repeated incidents of hate speech, targeted violence, and serious threats to their lives and liberty. 'Over the past few months, the petitioner has been subjected to grave threats, harassment, and physical intimidation, purely because of his political identity and advocacy for north Indian rights. The situation has reached an alarming stage, with public calls to violence and actual physical assaults following thereafter,' the plea read. He cites multiple instances, including an October 6, 2024, attack at his office in Andheri, allegedly by 30 MNS supporters, and a Gudi Padwa rally on March 30, 2025, where Mr. Thackeray allegedly incited violence against Hindi-speaking residents. Following the Gudi Padwa speech, the petition documents multiple incidents of violence against Hindi-speaking individuals, including a bank manager, a security guard, and bank staff, which were reported by various news outlets in early April 2025. Mr. Shukla states that he has received numerous threats, including phone calls and messages, to 'eliminate' him. The petition also mentions threats received through phone calls and messages in April 2025 by two MNS associates, Mahindra Manji Bhanushali and Avinash Anant Jadhav. The petition includes a timeline of complaints filed by him with various authorities, alleging a lack of action. He has sent email complaints to the DGP, the Commissioner of Police-Mumbai, the Home Minister, and the Governor of Maharashtra on October 9 and 16, 2024, the petition said. He has also submitted a written complaint to the Chief Minister on October 17, 2024. He also sent a complaint to the Governor, Union Home Minister, the Election Commission, the Maharashtra government, and the Commissioner of Police on July 10, 2025, expressing frustration over the lack of action. The petition states that after exhausting all remedies and not receiving a reply, Mr. Shukla filed a Special Leave Petition before the Supreme Court on April 15, 2025. The Supreme Court, in an order dated August 4, 2025, directed Mr. Shukla to approach the Bombay High Court, leading to the filing of the present petition. The petition seeks police protection for the petitioner and his family and the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Mr. Thackeray.

Actor Darshan, four others remanded in central prison on a day of high drama
After nearly 10 months of the bail period, Kannada film actor Darshan and four others were arrested by the Annapoorneshwari Nagar police for the third time. They were remanded in custody at the Central Prison of Parappana Agrahara on Thursday after the Supreme Court (SC) cancelled their bail. The police, following the SC order, arrested Pavithra Gowda, the prime accused in the case, at her house in Rajarajeshwari Nagar, and three other accused, namely Pradosh from Girinagar, Lakshman from RPC Layout, and Nagaraj from Mysuru. Hearing on Aug. 23 All the accused were subjected to medical examination before being escorted, amidst tight security, to the judge's residence. The judge ordered them to be sent to judicial custody and posted the next hearing for August 23. The other two accused, Anukumar and Jagadeesh, arrested from Chitradurga, will be produced before the court on Friday, S. Girish, DCP, West Division, supervising the development, said. Darshan was arrested from his wife's apartment in Hosakerehalli, where he had come to see his son. According to sources, Darshan, to avoid the media glare, changed vehicles and shifted from his SUV into another car and entered the apartment by the back door. The police, who were present at the apartment, arrested him and brought him to the Annapoorneshwari Nagar police station, where the other accused were housed. Family members, including Darshan's and Pavithra's mothers, accompanied them to the station. Strict vigil The prison officials have made elaborate security arrangements inside the prison to house Darshan and Pavithra Gowda, considering the earlier episode of security lapses. The apex court, while rejecting the bail, warned of strict action against officials if the accused is found to have special privileges.
