The Hong Kong Observatory will issue the No 1 typhoon signal at 10.20pm on Saturday night, with higher warnings possible on Sunday as the city faces occasional squally showers and thunderstorms.
The weather forecaster said an area of low pressure over the central and northern parts of South China Sea had intensified into a tropical depression.
'Under the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds will strengthen tomorrow,' a spokesman said.
The Observatory warned it might upgrade the warning signal on Sunday morning.
Rainbands associated with the low pressure area have affected the coast of Guangdong province. As the area moves north, it is expected to bring occasional squally showers and thunderstorms to the city.

Strong Monsoon Signal may replace T1: HKO

Strong Monsoon Signal may replace T1: HKO The observatory said the tropical depression is moving away from Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Observatory said on Sunday afternoon that the Standby Signal No 1 will remain in force until at least 8 pm, but it no longer plans to issue a higher signal. Forecasters said the tropical depression is gradually moving away from Hong Kong, maintaining a distance of more than 600 kilometres away from the SAR. "The tropical depression is expected to skirt the southwestern coast of Hainan Island [on Sunday night] and will move further away from Hong Kong," acting senior scientific officer, Chong Sze-ning, said. "The observatory will then consider replacing the Standby Signal No 1 with the Strong Monsoon Signal." However, Chong said heavy rain and strong winds could still affect Hong Kong on Sunday night and Monday morning. She said showers will be heavy at times and seas will be rough with swells, and members of the public should refrain from engaging in water sports.

No 1 typhoon signal in Hong Kong to remain in force until 8pm on Sunday

The No 1 typhoon signal will remain in force in Hong Kong at least until 8pm on Sunday, while some classes were suspended in neighbouring Macau due to the tropical depression. The Hong Kong Observatory said the tropical depression would remain at least 600 kilometres (373 miles) from the city on Sunday morning. 'Under the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds are occasionally strong offshore and on high ground,' it said. 'The need for issuing the No 3 strong wind signal thereafter depends on the distance between associated strong winds and the Pearl River Delta, and the change in local winds.' Rainbands associated with the tropical depression affected the coastal areas of Guangdong on Sunday. There will be occasional squally showers with thunderstorms in Hong Kong. Macau's Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau issued a No 3 typhoon signal at noon on Sunday, which it said would remain in effect throughout the day.
