The No 1 typhoon signal will remain in force in Hong Kong at least until 8pm on Sunday, while some classes were suspended in neighbouring Macau due to the tropical depression.
The Hong Kong Observatory said the tropical depression would remain at least 600 kilometres (373 miles) from the city on Sunday morning.
'Under the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China, local winds are occasionally strong offshore and on high ground,' it said.
'The need for issuing the No 3 strong wind signal thereafter depends on the distance between associated strong winds and the Pearl River Delta, and the change in local winds.'
Rainbands associated with the tropical depression affected the coastal areas of Guangdong on Sunday. There will be occasional squally showers with thunderstorms in Hong Kong.
Macau's Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau issued a No 3 typhoon signal at noon on Sunday, which it said would remain in effect throughout the day.

Hong Kong cancels all rainstorm warnings less than 2 hours after class suspensions

New users who download our updated app get a seven-day free trial. Hong Kong education authorities suspended all morning and whole-day classes on Monday due to squally thunderstorms, but the weather forecaster cancelled all rainstorm warnings less than two hours after the announcement. The Hong Kong Observatory cancelled the amber signal at 7.20am after issuing it at 6.05am. The signal means that heavy rain exceeding 30mm in an hour has fallen or is expected to fall over Hong Kong. It was raised following a red warning, which was issued at 1.15am. 'As the Red Rainstorm Warning Signal is now in force, classes of all AM schools and whole-day schools are suspended today. Schools should implement contingency plans and arrange staff to look after students who might arrive and ensure that conditions are safe before allowing students to return home,' the Education Bureau said at 5.30am on Monday. But it added that if the warning is lowered to amber at or before 10.30am, afternoon classes would proceed as usual unless advised otherwise. 'Under the combined effect of the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China and the tropical depression over the northern part of the South China Sea, it is windy over the coast of southern China and the northern part of the South China Sea. Meanwhile, a band of intense thundery showers is affecting the vicinity of the Pearl River Estuary,' the observatory said.

Standby Signal No 1 to remain until 8pm: HKO
Standby Signal No 1 to remain until 8pm: HKO Forecasters said whether the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 would be needed depended on factors such as the change in local winds. Image courtesy of the Observatory The Observatory on Sunday said that the Standby Signal No. 1 would remain in force until at least 8pm, as a tropical depression keeps its distance from Hong Kong. Forecasters said the storm was expected to stay some 600 kilometres away from the SAR, and therefore the standby signal would remain in force. "The need for issuance of the Strong Wind Signal, No. 3 thereafter depends on the distance between its associated strong winds and the Pearl River Estuary, and the change in local winds," the Observatory said in a statement. Forecasters warned that local winds are expected to be occasionally strong offshore and on high ground, due to the combined effect of the tropical depression and the ridge of high pressure over southeastern China. They also expected squally showers and thunderstorms to affect Hong Kong, as seas will be rough with swells. The Observatory issued the standby signal at 10.20pm on Saturday.
