
The Big Question: How will AI transform the travel industry?
Did you know that tourism accounts for 10% of the EU's gross domestic product (GDP), according to the European Parliament? Statista also estimates that revenue for the EU-27 travel and tourism market will hit $220.1 billion (€210.3bn) in 2025.
The rebound in travel following the pandemic has driven much of the sector's gains in the past few years.
Glenn Fogel, CEO of Booking.com says: 'We have just seen such incredible desire to travel. You can actually see it, how much people want to travel because as soon as a country opened up, people would just jump to travel. So we got a big, big boost for the first few years of coming out of Covid. That desire to travel, it never ends.
'Now, of course, the question is, is it going to continue or not? And sometimes people talk about, 'Well, prices are so high, so will people be able to travel or is there going to be a recession and people won't have the money to travel?''
In this episode of The Big Question, Glenn sat down with Angela Barnes to discuss the issues shaping the travel sector: sustainable tourism, overtourism and the wildest future trends.
Balancing sustainability with profitability
With an increased focus on sustainability in the travel sector, travel companies and their partners are facing more hurdles in maintaining profit margins while increasing sustainability options for consumers.
Fogel emphasises: 'Sustainability is critical for the future of our industry. Our mission is to make it easier for everybody to experience the world. If the world isn't worth experiencing, that's not going to be good for travel.'
Rapidly changing and often overlapping regulations are also posing barriers to profitability in the travel sector, by forcing companies to invest significant time and resources in working out how to adhere to them.
EU regulations such as the Digital Markets Act (DMA) have contributed to higher costs and more cumbersome processes for European companies like Booking.com, unlike other global competitors like Google, which are far bigger and can more efficiently handle overlapping policies as well as rapid regulatory changes.
Other non-EU travel companies, often as big as Booking.com, also don't have to adhere to EU regulations. That significantly affects Booking.com's ability to compete with them, while also seeming to 'punish' other successful European travel companies and the domestic travel sector as a whole.
Regarding those competitors, Fogel says: 'They don't have their engineers dealing with the regulations. Their engineers are creating better services for their consumers. So my thinking is: Why did we come up with this? We're going to make things harder for the European companies to compete against the global travel industry.'
How is AI likely to change travel?
Artificial intelligence tools such as Booking.com's AI trip planner, help travellers with more personalised itineraries, while also providing more customer support.
However, Fogel notes: 'What's more important though, in the future is a thing called agentic AI and that's an area where the computer is doing the work for you.
So instead of you having to be typing into the browser or the app all the information and going through it, it's doing it for you.'
Agentic AI is likely to allow the entire travel industry network, from consumer to supplier and the partners in between to coordinate through their own AI agents and plan travel solutions.
This will, unfortunately, be likely to lead to job losses, particularly in the customer service area.
'The future is not supersonic but hypersonic'
Coming to the future of travel, Fogel said: 'But what's really interesting in the future is not supersonic but hypersonic. And where you actually are going into the edge of space and you'll be able to do a trip from, say, London to Australia in a fraction of the time it takes now to do that. Now, will it happen or not? Who knows? Part of the issue is sustainability.'
He clarified that hypersonic travel is unlikely to be introduced in the next decade and that Booking.com has no investment in it currently. However, the company would be likely to add it to its inventory if and when tickets for hypersonic travel are available for sale.
Fogel also highlighted that Booking.com will not be providing private jets for ultra luxury travel, saying: 'That's not something that we do and we have no plan to do it. It's a very, very small segment and it's not very sustainable.'

The problem took a few weeks to show up on production lines. In early April, China imposed restrictions on the export of certain strategic metals – specifically, heavy rare earths and the magnets made from them. This has created a bottleneck for many industries worldwide that depend on these materials. The automotive sector has already begun to feel the impact. Japanese automaker Suzuki was forced to suspend production of its Swift model on May 26 due to a shortage of certain components – rare earth derivatives, according to the business daily Nikkei. At the end of May, Ford halted production of its Explorer SUV for a week after a supplier ran out of magnets made from rare earth alloys. Meanwhile, one of India's leading manufacturers, Bajaj, stated that if nothing changes, the shortage caused by China would "heavily impact" its production of electric vehicles in July. On Wednesday, June 4, the European automotive industry also revealed its exposure to this risk. Without citing specific cases, the European Association of Automotive Suppliers, Clepa, stated that "these restrictions have led to the closure of several production lines and factories in Europe, and the impact will continue to grow in the coming weeks as stocks are depleted." BMW confirmed that some of its suppliers had been affected. "We have shifted to crisis management," said Sylvain Broux, president of the Comité de liaison des industries fournisseurs de l'automobile (CLIFA) in France, while Jean-Louis Pech, president of the Fédération des industries des équipements pour véhicules, described an "economic war in which Europe also has arguments to put forward."

EU states look to trim compensation for flight delays
At present, passengers in Europe have a right to between 250 and 600 euros ($285-685) in compensation, depending on flight distance, for delays of three hours or more. But airlines complain that leaves them a hefty bill, and often leads them to cancel flights rather than run them with a long delay, due to knock-on effects on flight schedules. A majority of EU states agreed late Thursday to change the rules, overcoming opposition from Germany in particular, following hours of painstaking negotiations in Luxembourg. Under the new system, the compensation threshold would increase to four hours for flights of up to 3,500 kilometres (2,175 miles), or connecting cities inside the European Union, with its amount set at 300 euros. For longer flights, the right to compensation of 500 euros would kick in after a six-hour delay. The European Consumer Organisation BEUC slammed the plan, saying the "new eligibility thresholds will deprive the majority of passengers from their compensation rights", as most delays are between two and four hours. It urged European lawmakers -- who have yet to approve the text -- to uphold passengers' rights. The compromise did not satisfy airlines either, with the umbrella group Airlines for Europe (A4E) -- which includes Air France-KLM, Lufthansa, Ryanair and easyJet -- complaining that it "introduced even more complexity" than the initial European Commission plan. But a spokesperson for the French aviation industry federation called it a "step forward" for consumers. The rules changes "clarify the law and will avoid many recurrent court disputes," said the spokesperson, Laurent Timset. Poland's infrastructure minister Dariusz Klimczak, whose country currently holds the EU presidency, meanwhile cheered the creation of "over 30 new rights" for passengers, in a statement announcing the deal. Those include a "right to be rerouted" at the earliest opportunity, including through flights operated by other carriers or alternative transport modes. The plan also creates a system for passengers to be automatically compensated for flights cancelled within 14 days of departure. And it spells out the right to assistance -- refreshments, food, accommodation -- when travel is disrupted. France's transport minister Philippe Tabarot declared himself satisfied with the compromise.

Europe's right caught in wake of broken Trump-Musk bromance
The very public fallout between Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, once among the US president's closest advisors, has rippled across the Atlantic, drawing fascination as well as anxiety from Europe's right-wing and far-right political circles. The collapse of the Trump-Musk alliance, marked by bitter exchanges over government contracts and personal insults, has left many on Europe's right politically adrift. Online, the moment has already spawned memes comparing European parties to children caught in a bitter divorce. Yet beyond the humour, the European right woke up in shock. For many of its leaders, Trump had served as proof that a nationalist 'wave' was not only possible but already underway. Musk, meanwhile, became an unlikely champion of their causes, lending legitimacy, visibility, and even a platform to far-right movements like Germany's AfD and Italy's Lega, with particularly close ties to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. So far, there has been no official comment from Europe's right-wing leaders on the Trump-Musk rift. That silence is striking as these politicians are usually quick to react to global events, especially those involving figures they admire. Their hesitation suggests a deeper unease: being forced to choose sides could present a strategic dilemma that reshapes the future of Europe's right-wing landscape. Germany's far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) faces a delicate balancing act. While the party has long admired Trump's nationalist politics – often calling for a 'Germany First' approach – it has also benefited significantly from Musk's support. Musk has repeatedly praised the AfD, once stating, 'Only the AfD can save Germany.' Ahead of Germany's federal elections, he even participated in livestreamed discussions with AfD co-leader Alice Weidel and used his platform X (formerly Twitter) to amplify the party's messaging. Meanwhile, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who was present at the White House during part of the unfolding dispute between the pair, hasn't commented, though his CDU party competes directly with the AfD and is likely watching developments closely. Italy's Lega and its leader Matteo Salvini face a similar dilemma but from a slightly different angle. Salvini has long styled himself as Italy's most pro-Trump figure, even more so than his rival Giorgia Meloni. Yet Musk has also courted Lega. In April, he addressed the party's national congress in Florence via video link as a star guest, echoing his involvement with the AfD. For Meloni, the situation is even more complex as she has cultivated relationships with both men. As the first Western European leader to meet Trump following the announcement of US tariffs on EU goods, she positioned herself as a diplomatic bridge between Washington and Brussels. At the same time, she has maintained a pragmatic, deal-oriented relationship with Musk, particularly regarding potential SpaceX contracts for Italian defence communications. Despite their ties to Musk and shared ideological overlaps, both Meloni and Salvini are likely to side with Trump in the event of a political schism since Trump remains a key political ally and, unlike Musk, is an elected leader. In other parts of Europe, the choice appears clearer. Parties such as Hungary's Fidesz under Viktor Orbán and France's National Rally, now led by Jordan Bardella, have consistently aligned themselves with Trump's nationalist agenda. Orbán, one of Trump's closest allies in Europe, frequently echoes his anti-immigration rhetoric and strongman leadership style. Bardella has praised Trump's patriotism and nationalist policies, while showing little public admiration for Musk. Elsewhere, parties like Poland's Law and Justice (PiS), Austria's Freedom Party (FPÖ), and Spain's Vox have seen Musk act more as a sympathetic amplifier of their messages rather than as a political partner. While Musk has given visibility to far-right narratives on his social media platform, he lacks the political authority or ideological consistency that many of these parties find in Trump. As the Trump-Musk feud continues to unfold, Europe's right-wing movements may be forced into a reckoning. Do they align with a political icon who has shaped modern populism or with a tech mogul whose influence lies in platforms, not policies? For now, many are watching and waiting. But if tensions escalate further, silence may no longer be an option. A new YouGov study shows that the favourability towards Israel in Britain, France, Germany, Denmark, Spain and Italy is at or near its lowest level in Western Europe since 2016. The research interviewed 8,625 people from these six key Western European countries between November 2016 and May 2025. Net favourability towards Israel in Germany (-44), France (-48), and Denmark (-54) has reached its lowest level since YouGov started tracking in 2016, while public sentiment in Italy (-52) and Spain (-55) are likewise at their lowest or joint lowest levels, despite a shorter timespan from 2021 onwards. A number of Europeans across these six countries think Israel was right to send troops into Gaza, but believe they have since gone too far and caused too many civilian casualties. This opinion won the most support in Germany at 40%, followed by Denmark at 39% and Britain at 38%. Israel's military campaign has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Food supplies have also been blocked, with the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC)'s latest report stating half a million people face starvation. Between 7% and 18% of European respondents say they sympathise most with the Israeli side, the lowest figure in most countries since the Hamas attacks. By contrast, between 18% and 33% say they sympathise more with the Palestinian side. Only in Germany are the figures for each side similar, with 17% for Israel and 18% for Palestine. Despite permanent peace in the Middle East seeming distant to Europeans, French people are the most optimistic that both sides will set aside their differences within the next 10 years. Meanwhile, Danes are the least optimistic at 15%. Across all countries, the opinion that peace is realistic has fallen in popularity by between four and ten percentage points.
