Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Chief Executive Lisa Su has said that the chipmaker sees the artificial intelligence processor market topping $500 billion by 2028.The Silicon Valley company said the market is likely to grow at over 60 per cent annually to exceed USD 500 billion, from being a $45 billion opportunity in 2023.Addressing the company's flagship Advancing AI 2025 conference here on Thursday, Su said the growth will be led by the inferencing work, which is a shift from training."What I can tell you based on everything that we see today is that that number is going to be exceeding USD 500 billion by 2028," Su said.The company unveiled the "MI350 Series GPUs (graphic processing units)" at the flagship event along with a host of other products.Su said opting for the newly launched chips may be beneficial for customers, claiming that they issue up to 40 per cent more tokens per dollar.It can be noted that Nvidia is generally considered an entrenched player in the GPUs market, and the demand for its chips is very high. There are waiting periods as well for the chips.In her address, Su said that seven of the 10 largest AI customers, including the largest Indian telco Reliance Jio, are deploying AMD Instinct Accelerators at present.AMD had last year announced the MI350 and announced that the same offering, which has displayed a four-times increase in compute as compared to the previous generation, is in production now and will be commercially available from the third quarter onwards.During her address, Su spoke with a slew of clients and partners, including OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman , and senior executives from other companies like Meta, Microsoft and Oracle Su said the company is focused on open architecture as a fundamental tenet in its approach to serving the AI world, an aspect which is different from the approach adopted by Nvidia.The company also launched a developer cloud access programme, under which it will grant access to the developer community to try and use its offerings first-hand.Su said the company believes that innovation happens faster when something is thrown open for the developers, and backed it up by citing examples from history as well.It also showcased the 'Helios AI Rack Scale' solution, a fully integrated AI platform and announced that the same will be available from the next year onwards.

Before arriving in Canada on Monday for the G7 Summit, PM Narendra Modi will visit Cyprus, the first by an Indian PM in over two decades, and will also travel to Croatia, marking the first-ever visit by an Indian prime minister. PM Modi will pay an official visit to Cyprus, Canada and Croatia from June 15-19, the MEA said Saturday. PM Modi will visit Cyprus on June 15-16, on his way to Canada to participate in the G7 Summit in Kananaskis on June 16-17, and conclude the five-day visit with an official visit to Croatia on June 18. This will be PM Modi's first foreign tour after Operation Sindoor. 'At the invitation of the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, PM Modi will pay an official visit to Cyprus June 15-16. This will be the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades,' the MEA said. In Nicosia, Modi will hold talks with Christodoulides and address business leaders in Limassol. The visit will reaffirm the shared commitment of the two countries to deepen bilateral ties and strengthen India's engagement with the Mediterranean region and the European Union, as per the MEA. Cyprus had condemned the Pahalgam terror attack and indicated that it would raise the issue of cross-border terrorism emanating from Pakistan at the EU-level discussions. The visit will be timely as Cyprus is set to take over the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026. In the second leg of his visit, PM Modi will travel to Kananaskis to participate in the G7 Summit, his sixth time in a row. On June 6, PM Modi received a call from Canadian PM Carney inviting him for the summit. At the summit, PM Modi will exchange views with G7 heads of states, other invited outreach countries and heads of international organisations on global issues, 'including energy security, technology and innovation, particularly the AI-energy nexus and Quantum-related issues', the MEA said. The Modi-Carney meeting on the sidelines summit next week will be an opportunity to explore ways to reset ties, the MEA said on Thursday. The development comes after more than a year-and-a-half of strained diplomatic ties between the two countries, triggered by former Canadian PM Justin Trudeau's allegations about the 'potential' involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada in 2023. India rejected the charges as 'absurd' and 'motivated', and consequently, both nations expelled high commissioners and other senior diplomats. PM Modi will also hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines, officials say, even as modalities are being worked out. The G7 Leaders' Summit will be held from June 15-17. In the final leg of his tour, PM Modi will undertake an official visit to Croatia and hold bilateral discussions with his Croatian counterpart Andrej Plenković and meet the President of Croatia, Zoran Milanovic. The visit to Croatia will also underscore India's commitment to further strengthen its engagement with partners in the EU. In the wake of Operation Sindoor, the PM had cancelled his nation-nation tour to Europe, which included Croatia, Norway and the Netherlands. Air India announces ₹25 lakh interim payment to families of deceased, survivor in Ahmedabad plane crash
Air India Plane crash: Air India will be providing an interim payment of ₹ 25 lakh each to the families of the deceased and to the survivor of the Ahmedabad plane crash to help address immediate financial needs, the Tata Group owned airline announced on Saturday. The latest amount announced will be paid in addition to the Tata Son's previously promised compensation of ₹ 1 lakh to families of each passenger who lost their lives in the deadly crash, stated Air India. As many as 270 people, including MBBS students, a resident PG doctor were killed after an Air India plane — a Boeing 787 — smashed into BJ Medical College's hostel in Ahmedabad on Thursday, June 12. Only one passenger who was seated on 11A at the time of the crash, miraculously survived. Air India's statement Yesterday, Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of the Tata Group, described 12 June as one of the "darkest days in the Tata Group's history" in an internal letter to employees. All 241 passengers aboard the ill fated flight, including former Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani lost their lives in the deadly crash. Only one Indian-born British national — Ramesh Vishwaskumar miraculously survived. Aged 40-years, Ramesh Vishwaskumar was visiting India to meet his elder brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, who was also travelling with him in the same aircraft. 'I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were bodies all around me,' Ramesh told Hindustan Times, adding that 'there were pieces of the plane scattered everywhere.' Earlier in the day, Indian Medical Association (IMA) wrote to Air India, demanding ₹ 1 crore each to the doctors and people who lost their lives around the hostel. The IMA president Dr Anil Kumar J Nayak also sought Tata Group Chairman N Chandrasekaran to announce a package after conducting a survey for any student or resident who is injured or disabled. The aviation ministry said that the last message of the pilot before crashing was 'Mayday', adding that the flight had climbed 650 feet in the air before it started descending.

Five foreign universities get letter of intent to set up branch campuses in Mumbai
NEW DELHI: Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday handed over Letter of Intent (LoI) to five foreign universities to set up their branch campuses in Mumbai. The five universities are -- Chicago's Illinois Tech, Scotland's University of Aberdeen, UK's University of York, University of Western Australia and Italy's IED Instituto Europeo di Design. "The historic city of Mumbai - is a city of dreams and resilience. It is also known for its intellect and spirit of enterprise. Mumbai EduCity being envisioned at Navi Mumbai will poise Mumbai to lead in the education sector and also situate it amongst global knowledge capitals. "Mumbai EduCity is a bold statement towards shaping a global, future-ready education ecosystem and facilitating two-way movement of ideas, talent and trust in line with the ethos of NEP 2020," Pradhan said. The Queen's University Belfast and the Coventry University have also received approval for setting up campuses in the GIFT City.
