Lala Sotto submits courtesy resignation as MTRCB chief
In a letter dated May 23, Sotto-Antonio said she is stepping down from her post following the President's call, and that her resignation would be effective upon his acceptance or as he deems appropriate.
"It has been a profound honor to serve in your administration and to lead the MTRCB in fulfilling its mandate of guiding and safeguarding the content consumed by the Filipino public," Sotto-Antonio said.
"I remain grateful for the opportunity to contribute to nation-building through this agency and for the trust you have placed in me during my tenure," she added.
Sotto-Antonio is the daughter of returning senator Tito Sotto, who won under the senatorial slate of the Marcos-backed Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas. The elder Sotto is reportedly vying for the Senate presidency in the 20th Congress.
A former Quezon City councilor with a career in showbiz, Sotto-Antonio was appointed to the MTRCB post in July 2022 just days after Marcos took office as president of the Republic.
Last Thursday, Malacañang announced that Marcos has called for the courtesy resignation of Cabinet secretaries, with the aim to "recalibrate" his administration.
Marcos said it was "time to realign government people's expectations" following the conclusion of Eleksyon 2025.
The request for courtesy resignations would give the President the elbow room "to evaluate the performance of each department and determine who will continue to serve in line with his administration's recalibrated priorities."
Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin had announced that as of Friday afternoon, 52 officials had submitted their courtesy resignations.
The MTRCB is an agency under the Office of the President.
By virtue of Presidential Decree 1986, the MTRCB has the power to screen, review and examine motion pictures and television programs, including publicity materials such as advertisements, trailers and stills. It may also disapprove or delete portions of such content that are deemed objectionable for being immoral, indecent, unlawful, or injurious to the Republic of the Philippines and its people, among others. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Public concern over inflation, affordable food eased in Q2 2025 —OCTA
Fewer Filipinos expressed concern over inflation and access to affordable food and wages during the second quarter of the year, according to the latest data from OCTA Research released on Wednesday. In its July Tugon ng Masa (TNM) survey, OCTA Research reported that public concern over issues sharply declined in the second quarter of 2025, with half or 50% of Filipino adults citing inflation as the most urgent national concern in the country. Concern for affordable food likewise declined by 10 percentage points or 41% to 31%, and improving wages by 11 percentage points or 36% to 26%. 'These declines may indicate a notable easing of economic anxieties,' the poll firm said. 'While inflation, food affordability, and wages remain among the top national concerns, the sharp decreases point to a changing public mood—where Filipinos may feel some relief, even if cautiously, compared to the heightened urgency observed earlier in the year,' it added. Other urgent national concerns included job creation (26%) and reducing poverty (23%). The OCTA Research conducted the face-to-face survey with 1,200 Filipino adults from July 12 to July 17, 2025. It has a ±3% margin of error at a 95% confidence level. Personal concern Likewise, the TNM survey indicated a easing of the most urgent personal concern of adult Filipinos. The majority or 63% of Filipinos identified staying healthy and avoiding illnesses as their top concern — down by 7 percentage points from 70% in April to 63% in July. Concerns about having enough to eat every day also reduced by 4 percentage points from 51% to 47%. Meanwhile, concerns about finishing schooling or being able to provide schooling for their children remained relatively stable, edging up slightly from 45% in April to 46% in July 2025. 'Taken together, these shifts suggest that some households may be experiencing modest improvements in day-to-day conditions. However, the continued prominence of health, food security, and education underscores that these remain core vulnerabilities requiring sustained attention,' the survey added. —LDF, GMA Integrated News

PH Army chief to troops: Suppress threats to 1st BARMM polls
Philippine Army chief Lieutenant General Antonio Nafarrete ordered troops to suppress security threats to the first parliamentary elections in Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) on October 13, 2025. In a statement on Wednesday, the Philippine Army said Nafarrete gave the order during his visit to the 6th Infantry "Kampilan" Division headquarters at Camp Siongco in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte. 'Our objective is singular: That is to secure the elections, suppress threats, and maintain peace. To all personnel, remember that we remain non-partisan at all times,' Nafarrete addressed the soldiers. 'As we prepare for the upcoming BARMM elections, let us exert every effort to ensure that this historic exercise remains peaceful, fair and fully compliant with our existing laws and regulations,' he added. Aside from the 6th, the Army's 1st and 11th Infantry Divisions have been designated to secure the BARMM polls in the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur and Tawi-Tawi, as well as Cotabato City. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has declared the election period and gun ban in BARMM from August 14 to October 28. Meanwhile, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. joined Nafarrete at Camp Siongco and Western Mindanao Command headquarters Camp General Basilio Navarro in Zamboanga City. Brawner stressed the AFP's crucial responsibility in ensuring an orderly and peaceful electoral process. 'We must prepare ourselves for any eventualities,' Brawner said. 'We are one of the few institutions trusted by the Filipino people to keep our country stable. We must not be shaken—we should remain solid and professional in fulfilling our duty,' he added. On Sunday, the Comelec said the poll body is now 90% to 95% ready for the 2025 BARMM elections. Comelec chairperson George Garcia estimated about 2.3 million people will cast their votes during the BARMM polls. — Joviland Rita/RF, GMA Integrated News

Marcos: Baliwag flood project contractor to be blacklisted, face charges
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. inspects the reinforced concrete riverwall project in Barangay Piel, Baliwag, Bulacan on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. Marcos says he is 'very angry' that the P55-million project was recorded as completed, but in reality it was not. PPA President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Wednesday said SYMS Construction Trading, the firm involved in an alleged ghost flood project in Baliwag, Bulacan, would be blacklisted from the government's roster of contractors. "Ang SYMS Construction Trading ay agad na iba-blacklist at haharap sa mga kaso sa ilalim ng Revised Penal Code at RA 3019. Hahanapin at sisiyasatin pa natin ang iba pa nilang proyekto," Marcos said. (SYMS Construction Trading will be immediately blacklisted and will face charges under the Revised Penal Code and the RA 3019. We will also scrutinize their other projects.) Marcos also assured that those involved in the alleged anomalous project in Barangay Piel in Baliwag would be suspended and slapped with anti-graft and malversation of public funds charges. "Hindi natin palalampasin ito. Sususpendihin at kakasuhan ang lahat ng opisyal na nag-authorize at nakipagsabwatan dito ng paglabag sa Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act at Malversation of Public Funds through Falsification of Public Documents," he said. (We will not let this pass. The officials involved will be suspended and will face charges for violating the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act, as well as the Malversation of Public Funds through Falsification of Public Documents.) GMA News Online has requested comment from SYMS Construction Trading regarding the President's statements, but the company has yet to respond as of posting time. Earlier in the day, Marcos said the Barangay Piel project was an example of falsification of documents because as per records, it was finished. However, when Marcos inspected it, he learned that it was not even completed. The President said he was very angry with such flood control projects. Marcos had disclosed that 20% of the total P545 billion budget of flood control projects was awarded to only 15 contractors. The total number of the flood control projects was 9,855. Marcos earlier said a total of 6,021 projects were worth more than P350 billion, adding that they do not specify the exact type of flood control structures built, repaired, or rehabilitated. The President's list of 15 contractors does not include SYMS Construction Trading. Meanwhile, Marcos called on the public to continue filing reports in the website with regard to corrupt flood control projects. — VDV, GMA Integrated News
