State senator honors 4 Louisiana National Guard members killed in helicopter crash

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — On the steps of the Louisiana State Capitol, a state senator honored the four Louisiana National Guardsmen who died 10 years ago in a Florida helicopter crash.
Sen. Rick Edmonds presented a commemorative flag to family members and those who served with the men in honor of Chief Warrant Officer 4 George Wayne Griffin Jr., Chief Warrant Officer 4 George David Strother, Staff Sgt. Lance Bergeron and Staff Sgt. Thomas Florich. Seven Marines were also aboard the flight and killed in the crash.
The four were killed when their Black Hawk crashed during a training exercise. There were reports of heavy fog at the time of the crash. A 10-year anniversary ceremony is being held in Florida the same day to remember all of the men lost.
Edmonds invited Sgt. Dylan David, who served with the men, to say a few words about them in celebration and mourning.
'I felt we needed to do something like this because as I go to drill week in and week out, I realized that the number of people that I share a room with that knew these men personally is diminishing rapidly,' David said.
Griffin, of Delhi, had been deployed to Iraq twice and joined the Louisiana National Guard in 1994. Strother, of Alexandria, has been deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan and joined the National Guard from 1988-2007 and again in 2009. Bergeron, of Thibodaux, had been deployed to Iraq twice as a Marine and joined the National Guard in 2001. Florich, of Fairfax County, Virginia, joined the Louisiana National Guard in 2007. All left behind wives and children.
'It will be an everlasting reminder that Louisianians don't forget our heroes. We don't take out some other opinion or some other pathway. But we have governors like Gov. Landry and other leaders that remind us on a day to day basis that freedom is not free,' state Sen. Rick Edmonds said.
All four of them had served the state in their positions by responding to the BP oil spill and Hurricanes Katrina, Issac and Rita.
Edmonds said that with the support of Landry, they were able to take the moment out of the day to dedicate March 10 as an official day in honor of the four men.

Father-Daughter Tragedy: Second Hiker Found Dead on Mt. Katahdin

Mount Katahdin in Maine is most famous for being the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, but this week, the area became a tragic focal point. A father and daughter from New York went missing on the mountain while hiking over the weekend. After 3 days of searching, both bodies have been found, according to authorities with Baxter State Park, where the mountain is located. Esther Keiderling, 28, and her father, Tim Keiderling, 58, were visiting Baxter State Park in Millinocket and had planned to hike to the 5,270-foot summit of Mt. Katahdin. They were last seen on the morning of Sunday, June 1, after leaving Abol Campground, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (MDIFW). Park authorities said rangers began searching for the pair on Monday after the Keiderlings' vehicle was found still parked in the day-use parking lot. They began with the Abol and Hunt Trails, both popular routes for summiting Katahdin, and searched the Katahdin Tablelands. On Tuesday, Baxter State Park rangers expanded the search, assisted by more than 30 game wardens, including the Maine Warden Service Search and Rescue team and Maine Warden Service K9 Team. Maine Forest Service provided aerial support with three helicopters, and the Maine Army National Guard also assisted with Blackhawk and Lakota helicopters fitted with infrared thermal imaging devices. That afternoon, the K9 team located the body of Tim Keiderling on the Tableland, near the summit, according to park authorities. Teams continued to search the area for Esther, which carried over into today. A team of 25 game wardens, four K9 teams, and 21 rangers announced that at 1:00 p.m., the body of Esther Keiderling was identified in a wooded area of the Tablelands. GearJunkie reached out for comment but did not immediately hear back. There has been no report on the cause of death or what led the pair to go missing. Since 1933, 64 people have perished on Mount Katahdin, including two people in 2020. From 1992 to 2014, an average of 34 search and rescue missions had to be launched per year in the park. Hikers consider the summit of Katahdin to be one of the most difficult ascents in the Northeast. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Who is Travis Decker? A look at his confirmed military experience

The man wanted for the murder of his three daughters has a military background, KIRO 7 News confirmed Wednesday. Travis Decker is wanted for the murders of 9-year-old Paityn, 8-year-old Evelyn, and 5-year-old Olivia, after he failed to return from a planned custody visit Friday. Their bodies were discovered at a forest campground near Leavenworth Monday. Decker's truck, with his wallet at the scene, was found nearby. According to the National Guard, Decker enlisted in the Army in 2013 as an 11 Bravo infantryman. During his time in the Army, he went to Fort Benning in 2018. He attended the Non-Commissioned Academy. According to the Army website, the academy is 'A premier academy comprised of disciplined, fit, adaptive, agile, and standards-based leaders, committed to producing the best Signal, Cyber, and Public Affairs Noncommissioned Officers capable of integrating, leading, and supporting commanders to gain decision dominance in multi-domain operations; a values-based team that operates on trust, transparency and accountability, focused on quality of life and the personal and professional development of our people.' He earned badges while in the Army, including expert infantry and parachutist. The Expert Infantry Badge (EIB) is a test consisting of a physical assessment, land navigation test, 'expert' weapon qualification, a march of 12-miles with a 35-pound load, and other individual tasks, such as first aid, camouflage, map reading, and communications. The Parachutist Badge is completed by various phases, including jumping out of a plane five times in varying configurations. According to the Army, there is no indication of any special 'wilderness' or 'survivalist' training. In 2021, Decker transferred to Walla Walla National Guard, where he is currently a Sergeant (E5). According to the National Guard, Decker has not been to drill for approximately a year. Paperwork for an 'administration separation' was started, but hasn't been completed.
