'I knew Wayne Rooney when he was a teen - his true colours were clear'
Wayne Rooney took many people aback with his talent when he burst onto the scene at 16 with Everton, with a former club physio revealing the traits that marked him as a future star
When Wayne Rooney broke into Everton 's first-team at the age of just 16, many were shocked by the extent of the youngster's talents. The striker quickly made his name in football with a famous late winner for Everton against Arsenal in the Premier League in October 2002 after emerging through the club's academy.
Rooney's impact for his boyhood team was instant and he enjoyed two impressive breakthrough seasons in Merseyside, as well as a stunning Euro 2004 campaign with England, before leaving for Manchester United. Rooney went on to win five Premier League titles, one FA Cup and a Champions League trophy at the club, becoming the side's all-time top goal scorer.
He returned to Everton towards the end of his career before retiring in 2021 and moving into management with Derby County, D.C. United, Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle. It's now more than 22 years since Rooney grabbed the attention of everyone inside Goodison Park with that wonder goal against Arsenal.
One person watching from the touchline that day was unsurprised by how coolly Rooney took his chance. Former Everton physio Mick Rathbone is someone who got to see first-hand what he was like behind the scenes.
The ex-Birmingham, Blackburn and Preston defender opened up on the traits which made Rooney destined for the top in his memoir, The Smell of Football.
Rathbone wrote: "I have had so many high spots in my career, but being able to say I worked with Wayne is probably the top one. Everybody knows about him as a player, but I was lucky enough to know him as a lad.
"He is a very modest, polite young man, always courteous, always on time, hard-working, very bright and switched on. What sets these once-in-a-generation players apart from the rest?
"Obviously, much of it is natural ability and athleticism but lots of players are talented and athletic. With Wayne it was those things and - contrary to what many people think - the most incredible, unflappable temperament."
Rathbone said he first gained an understanding of Rooney's calm nature after observing his behaviour ahead of his first Merseyside derby match at Goodison Park in April 2003. He said the young forward's relaxed demeanour was in stark contrast to his own and a sign that he was meant to make it big.
Rathbone said: "I remember about 30 minutes before...he came into the medical room and started juggling the ball and generally larking about. He was laughing and clowning around. I couldn't believe how relaxed he was.
"I was sh*****g myself, as you would no doubt expect, even though I was only the physio, because the Merseyside derby is a big, big game.
"I was fascinated to get an insight into how he really felt, remembering when I was 17 years of age and about to cross the white line. That was it then, in a nutshell. Born to be great, born to play at the highest level."

Premier League legend completes fairytale story as he scores in play-off final to lead hometown club back to LaLiga after 24-year absence
Arsenal legend Santi Cazorla completed a fairytale swansong with his hometown club Real Oviedo as they returned to LaLiga after a 24-year absence. Cazorla, 40, gained legendary status at the Emirates after playing 180 times for the club between 2012 and 2018, during a period in which he won two FA Cups. The attacking midfielder, who has also played for the likes of Villarreal and Malaga, originally came through the youth ranks at Oviedo before joining Villarreal aged 17. He returned to the club in 2023 after a three-year spell in Qatar and on Saturday he kick-started a dramatic comeback as Oviedo won the LaLiga 2 play-off final. Taking on Mirandes, who they finished level on points with in the regular season, across a two-legged tie, Oviedo lost 1-0 in the first leg last Sunday. Things got off to a disastrous start in the second leg as they went 1-0 behind, but Cazorla gave his side hope when he converted a penalty late in the first half. Ilyas Chaira then levelled the tie in the second half, before it went to extra-time with the scores at 2-2 on aggregate. However, Oviedo - who lost in last season's play-off final - ensured lightning wouldn't strike twice as Francisco Portillo scored a stunning winner in the 103rd minute to lead Cazorla's side to promotion and back to LaLiga for the first time since 2001. It was a dramatic way to end the campaign, with Mirandes having two men sent off, while Oviedo ended with 10 and their victory sparked jubilant celebrations at full-time. Tearful Oviedo fans invaded the pitch and Cazorla looked delighted and was spotted kissing his wife Ursula. The 40-year-old had previously scored the winner in the play-off semi-final against Almeria, netting a free-kick after coming off the bench. The victory completed a remarkable story for Cazorla, who had been forced to leave Oviedo in 2003 amid financial issues which destroyed their academy and led to the first team dropping down to the third tier of Spanish football. However, his love for the club remained and when Oviedo faced financial issues a decade later, Cazorla purchased shares to help keep the team alive. When Cazorla then returned in 2023, he wanted to go unpaid, but league rules meant he had to earn a minimum salary of £80,000-per-year. The 40-year-old is out of contract at the end of this month and it remains to be seen whether he will continue his playing career, with Cazorla having previously outlined his desire to head into coaching, something that has been mooted at Arsenal. The fact Cazorla is still playing is testament to his desire and mental toughness given he faced 11 operations to cure an Achilles injury he suffered in October 2016. The issue almost caused Cazorla to lose his leg due to an infection and he was once told by doctors he should be happy to walk again, never mind play. Across numerous operations, some of his arm and hamstring muscle was used to rebuild the tendon. Cazorla also won 81 caps for Spain, winning Euro 2008 and 2012, although he missed La Roja's 2010 World Cup success due to injury.

Man Utd make fresh transfer move for £44.5m star 'in the last few hours'
Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit Moise Kean and are plotting a possible bid for the Fiorentina forward this summer, according to reports in Italy. Kean has managed to get his career back on track over the last 12 months at Fiorentina having endured difficult spells with both Everton and Juventus. The 25-year-old racked up 19 goals and three assists across an exceptional debut season for Florence-based outfit in the Italian top flight – and was subsequently named in the Serie A Team of the Season. However, speculation has been mounting that Kean could be set to move on from Fiorentina, with the allure of the Premier League representing a 'real danger' for the club, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport. The report suggests United have 'reappeared' for Kean 'in the last few hours' and Old Trafford bosses are monitoring the situation with increasing interest while 'setting their sights' on a potential deal. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. A release clause in Kean's contract at Fiorentina means he will be available for a fee of €52million (£44.5m) between July 1-15, which has put the Red Devils on red alert. Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Qadsiah have also been credited with a strong interest in Kean and could rival United for the ex-Everton attacker over the coming weeks and months. Kean has not ruled out the possibility that he could stay on in Florence, though, and Fiorentina have made it clear they do not want to lose their star forward in private discussions with the Italy international. It's claimed Kean is currently on vacation and is in no hurry to make any sudden decisions over his future. Kean's current deal, which he signed upon arrival at Fiorentina, runs through to June 2029. United have set out their stall this summer on the back of a wretched 2024/25 campaign, in which club missed out on Champions League qualification and finished with their worst-ever points total in the Premier League. Determined to strengthen Ruben Amorim's misfiring attack, the Red Devils wrapped up a £62.5million deal with Wolves to make Matheus Cunha their first signing of the transfer window. Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo has also been heavily linked with a move to United, with the Cameroon international ready to turn down Tottenham in favour of a switch to the Theatre of Dreams. 'It's a bit new for me, I would say, but that can be the life of a footballer. You need to accept it,' Mbeumo told Sky Sports when asked about interest from United and Spurs. Meanwhile, former United defender Rio Ferdinand has encouraged the club to explore a possible deal for wantaway Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. Asked who he would like to see join United this summer, Ferdinand said on his Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel: 'No.9, they already know who I want. The comments know, the people know who I want, who I would go and get: Osimhen! 'It looks like he's turned down Al-Hilal… he must be waiting for Manchester United. 'I don't know if Manchester United are going to come. That's the problem.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. John Stones hails Thomas Tuchel as Man City star opens up about England future
John Stones has thanked new England manager Thomas Tuchel and opened up about his future on the international stage ahead of the 2026 World Cup in North America England defender John Stones has spoken about his huge debt of gratitude to Thomas Tuchel. Three Lions boss Tuchel invited Stones to join the England training camp in Girona and also for a trip to the Barcelona Grand Prix earlier this month. It was a small gesture but one which Stones - who has won 83 caps - was hugely grateful for and it gave him a timely boost in his recovery as well as feeling like he was an older head for some of the younger players. Stones said: "It was really nice. Change of scenery for me and to be welcomed and asked to go with the team was really nice to be with the guys and be around the players after the season. I love being around the players after the season. I felt very welcomed and wanted. Hopefully I can bring something else. "I wasn't able to be in that squad but to maybe see it from a different angle, my leadership skills towards the players joining for the first time or the players who haven't been there very long. To spend a few days with them was really nice and I was really grateful." Stones also said that he is also relishing the new challenge and competition this coming season as City have signed eight players this year and spent nearly £300m. But Stones says that will spur him on for the new campaign as he will be one of the older heads. He added: "I'm one of the older ones! It's exciting. Everything is a challenge. I think that's why we thrive off it. We want to win. The guys who are coming to us are coming for a reason. They're quality and they deserve to be here. "It's a great challenge for us all. Fighting for a starting place. Fighting for titles again. Everything moves on life and in football. The club has had to make those decisions and bring new people in. They've been great so far. I can't speak highly enough of them." Stones missed the last three months of the season through injury and is hoping to be fully fit when the Premier League returns in August. Reflecting on his injury problems, Stones added: "I find it very challenging mentally, I have had some very low points in the past season and I just have to come back and once you come over those things, you can't really see the end of the tunnel when they keep happening. "And it's frustrating on the team, on myself, on the manager, that you're not available to help them, and you've got to find another way to be around the team. I don't know what the reason is, and we've sat with the medical staff, sports science, to try and figure out why. "Some things can't be explained. Which is even more testing mentally when there's not really an answer. I've been unlucky with some of the injuries that I've had, they were very rare last season, after speaking to specialists. "Sometimes I think, why has it happened to me? But I've got to deal with that and move forward and try to adapt with how my body's adapting. As I said, I feel great, I'm back fit, ready to help the team when called upon. "I think this season I've got to look more detailed into training, things that I can do off the pitch that I can sustain playing a lot more games."
