TimesofIndia.com in London: Gus Atkinson made an immediate impact on his return to the England XI but admitted the team was concerned about
Chris Woakes
' injury after a stop-start first day at The Oval.
'I don't know too much, but it doesn't look too great,' Atkinson said at the press conference. 'It's the last game of the series, so it's a big shame.'

Woakes left the field late in the day with a shoulder injury sustained while fielding. England were already a bowler short after a wayward performance from Jamie Overton and Josh Tongue.
Atkinson, though, had a good outing with two wickets and a direct-hit run-out of
Shubman Gill
. 'If we can keep them to 230-240, we're still in a good position,' he said.
India ended the day on 204 for 6, with Karun Nair producing a gutsy unbeaten 52 in testing conditions. It was Nair's first Test fifty in 3,148 days, the last being his triple century in 2016. He walked in with India wobbling and put together a crucial 51-run stand with Washington Sundar (19*).
Nair's knock, which included seven boundaries, was a rare moment of calm on a day when the ball constantly beat the bat. He brought up his half-century with a couple off Jacob Bethell.
With just 64 overs possible due to rain, India will be the happier side after fighting back from 153 for 6. England, meanwhile, will hope Woakes can recover in time to bowl again.

How Chris Woakes overcame injury to deliver for England at crucial moment

Chris Woakes It was a remarkable scene to end a remarkable series. On Friday morning. Chris Woakes was ruled out for the rest of the fifth Test match at The Oval on Friday morning. Three days later, though, he walked out to the crease with his left arm in a sling beneath his jumper, prepared to bat one-handed and on his non-dominant side, as England needed just 17 runs to win. Woakes stepped out of the dressing-room from the Bedser Stand. The drama and tension of the series decider only enhanced after this move, making the moment as moving as Rishabh Pant's hobble walk to the crease in Manchester with a fractured foot. England are yet to provide an official statement on Woakes injury England are yet to give an official statement, but it is believed that Woakes dislocated his shoulder while diving in the field on the opening day of the Test. He is set to consult a specialist this week to assess the severity of the injury. Woakes has been ruled out for the rest of the summer and is already a major doubt for the opening Ashes Test in Perth on November 21. With the final delivery of the 83rd over, Prasidh Krishna bowled England's No. 10 Josh Tongue, saving Woakes from facing a ball and allowing Atkinson to keep the strike. Woakes was clearly uncomfortable, though, as he grimaced after each run and asked umpire Ahsan Raza for assistance when his sling came loose during a bye. Woakes would have been replaced immediately following his injury on Thursday night in most other sports, but cricket is different. On Saturday, instead, he remained in the dressing room and observed England's three-man attack in action. He went to the indoor school for a practice batting session on Sunday afternoon as the chase continued. Woakes had a throwdown session before walking out to bat on final day Woakes initially tried to hold the bat normally while facing a few throwdowns, but as the tempo increased, the pain became unbearable. He then adopted a left-hander's stance and began batting with his left arm back in a sling. In addition to providing him with control over his 'top' hand, this helped him keep his injured shoulder as far away from the ball as possible. On Monday, Woakes required help from England physio Ben Davies to get padded up and had to improvise with his gear. He wore two small arm guards on his right arm and added as much protection as possible to his left, which was tucked under a jumper to keep it stable. Mohammed Siraj became furious when Woakes fought his way through for a bye at the end of his opening over at the crease. 'Nahin bola tu?' After landing his wide yorker and watching Dhruv Jurel's underarm throw miss the stumps, he asked Shubman Gill, 'Didn't you tell him?' Woakes, however, had bigger concerns, grimacing in pain and holding his left arm. Woakes managed to take off his helmet to put his left arm back in place. He asked Raza for help after realising that he won't be able to put his glove back on alone. As Woakes took a deep breath and prepared himself to stand at the non-striker's end once more, the packed fifth-day crowd began to grasp the full extent of what he was enduring.

Salaries of Bengaluru players, including Sunil Chhetri, suspended indefinitely; club issues statement amid ISL uncertainty

Sunil Chhetri (PTI Photo) In a dramatic and worrying development for Indian football, Indian Super League (ISL) side Bengaluru FC have announced the indefinite suspension of salaries for its first-team players and staff, including iconic striker and former national team captain Sunil Chhetri . The decision comes amid escalating uncertainty around the future of the ISL, which remains suspended following an unresolved standoff between Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and the All India Football Federation (AIFF). Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Bengaluru FC took to social media on Monday to deliver the difficult news to fans and stakeholders, stating, 'In view of the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Indian Super League season, Bengaluru Football Club has taken what is a very difficult decision of indefinitely suspending the salaries of players and staff belonging to the First Team. Running and sustaining a football club in India has always been an uphill climb, one that we have put everything aside and made, season after season. ' The club emphasised the emotional toll the situation is taking on the team and their families, adding, 'However, the lack of clarity on the League's future leaves us with no choice but to take this step. The future and well-being of our players, staff, and their families is of utmost importance to us, and we are in touch with them as we wait for a resolution.' We urge the AIFF and FSDL to end this impasse swiftly. The uncertainty benefits no one, and a prompt resolution is vital for the future of Indian football. ' This move comes just two weeks after Sunil Chhetri himself raised concerns about the bleak outlook for Indian football. On July 16, he wrote on X: 'It began with worrying about how I am on borrowed time with what I have left in the tank. But speaking with players from across clubs, I've realised that my selfish problem isn't as important. 'Everybody in the Indian football ecosystem is worried, hurt, scared about the uncertainty we are faced with.' The AIFF is expected to meet with club CEOs soon in an attempt to find common ground and salvage what remains of the season. ‘It had to be Mohammed Siraj' – Ex-England skipper on India's fightback in Oval classic

Mohammed Siraj of India greets the crowd after being announced as the player of the match on day five of the 5th Rothesay Test Match at The Kia Oval on August 04, 2025 in London, England. (Photo by) Former England captain Nasser Hussain said it would have been a travesty if England had won the Test series 3-1 and added that Mohammed Siraj taking the final wicket was a fitting end to an exhilarating series. 'The final scoreline was well and truly deserved by India, and it was very fitting for Siraj to get the final wicket,' Hussain told Sky Cricket. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'It would have been a travesty had England won the series 3-1. India deserved to make it 2-2 for the amount of good cricket they've played in this series.' The tireless Mohammed Siraj's warrior spirit steered India to a series-levelling six-run victory over England in the fifth and final Test on Monday, bringing a fitting end to one of the most intensely fought and drama-filled contests in recent memory. With four wickets in hand and just 35 runs to get, England held the edge at the start of the final day. But the gladiator in Siraj made life miserable for the opposition batters from the very first ball. Shubman Gill and Mohammed Siraj press conference: India stars answer all questions In the end, his fiery effort—well supported by Prasidh Krishna at the other end—left England short by the narrowest of margins and allowed India to sign off with a 2-2 draw in the high-pressure five-match series. The decision to call off play early on Day 4, following a brief spell of rain, drew criticism from the likes of Stuart Broad and Michael Vaughan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo However, it seemed fitting that the decider extended into the final day, with both teams battling tooth and nail until the very end. With all five Tests going into the final day, Hussain also highlighted why the 'Big Three' — India, Australia, and England — must safeguard the future of Test cricket. Poll Who was the standout player in the final Test match? Mohammed Siraj Prasidh Krishna Shubman Gill Other 'Why do people knock this format? It's just so wonderful. But I'm afraid other countries don't have the luxuries that England, India, and Australia enjoy,' Hussain said. 'The crowds throughout the whole series were incredible — pretty much sold out every day. Even today, there was a sell-out crowd for just 40 minutes of play. 'Not every country has that privilege, so England, India, and Australia must keep an eye on the future of Test match cricket. If we let this go, we're doing the game a disservice. We need to keep pushing it forward,' he added. For real-time updates, scores, and highlights, follow our live coverage of the India vs England Test match here.
