Family recipe builds muruku brand with global appeal

BUKIT MERTAJAM - Armed with a cherished family recipe, a husband-and-wife duo turned their humble beginnings into a thriving muruku business, attracting customers from both Malaysia and abroad.
Idris Alias, 67, and his wife, Fatimah Ishak, 63, from Guar Perahu, here, started their small home-based business in 1984 after she inherited a muruku recipe from her mother-in-law.
"I was seven months pregnant at the time, so we only made small batches of the crunchy snack. We had very little capital to start with. But I gave it a go, taking orders from friends.
"From those early days making muruku at home, we managed to grow the business under the brand name 'Muruku Bonda'. Nine years ago, we opened a shop in Kubang Semang, funded by profits we steadily reinvested,' Fatimah told Bernama. She said that Muruku Bonda uses natural ingredients, with no artificial colouring and entirely free from eggs, anchovies, or any animal-based products, making it ideal for those following a vegetarian diet.
Interestingly, over 85 per cent of their customers are from the Chinese community, making Chinese New Year their peak sales period.
"We even received orders from Taiwan at one point, but had to turn them down because the shipping costs were too high. Still, the customer flew over themselves and bought in bulk to take home,' she added.
Currently, the couple operates with just two frying machines -- usually only one runs on regular days, producing around 150 kilogrammes (kg) of muruku daily, increasing to 200kg during festive periods.
Idris shared that their son and daughter-in-law now help run the family business.
One of their main challenges, he explained, is limited operating space, which makes it difficult to meet growing demand.
They even had to decline an offer to stock Muruku Bonda in a major convenience store chain.
Nonetheless, the couple remain determined to expand into a larger facility in the future, with hopes of passing the business down to their only child.
"My advice to young entrepreneurs is to understand your product and your customers, and to have patience. That is vital in the business world.
"Most importantly, as Muslims, we must remember to give charity and pay zakat. That's the key to lasting blessings. Not just in wealth, but also in health,' Idris said. - BERNAMA

On Friday, the group revised its full-year operating return on sales forecast down to 4 to 5 percent, compared to an earlier projection of 5.5 to 6.5 percent. The revised outlook is based on the assumption that U.S. tariffs in the second half of the year will range between 10 and 27.5 percent. Porsche, another high-end Volkswagen subsidiary, is also under pressure. The luxury brand announced last week that it is weighing further cost-cutting measures in response to declining U.S. sales and escalating costs. The company estimates it incurred around 300 million euros in extra expenses in April and May due to efforts to shield customers from the impact of new duties. While a weekend agreement between the United States and the European Union capped auto tariffs at 15 percent, a reduction from previously planned punitive levels, the German auto industry remains cautious. Hildegard Mueller, president of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), warned on Monday that the revised tariff rate could still cost German carmakers several billion euros annually, exacerbating financial strain at a time of fundamental transformation for the industry. The VDA has consistently opposed Washington's tariff hikes, warning they would undermine EU exports, disrupt global supply chains, and increase costs for American consumers. NAIROBI, July 28 (Xinhua) -- The 10th edition of the Africa Tech Challenge (ATC), sponsored by Chinese firm AVIC International, officially commenced on Monday in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, reaffirming efforts to equip African youth with practical, market-ready technical skills. Hosted by Kenya's Ministry of Education, AVIC Innovation Holding Limited, and the China Education Association for International Exchange, the initiative features 142 teams comprising 568 participants from 12 African countries. This year's event includes a month-long training phase from Monday to Aug. 27 before culminating in a two-day competition from Aug. 28 to 29, with participants competing in three categories: mobile application development, mechanical engineering, and computer numerical control turning. Esther Mworia, principal secretary in Kenya's State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, said the ATC has, over the past decade, offered a platform to reskill African youth, drive innovation, and hasten economic growth. ISTANBUL, July 28 (Xinhua) -- The recent launch of two freight trains from China to Türkiye via the Middle Corridor marks a new chapter for the route, signaling progress toward more regular and efficient China-Europe rail operations, Turkish authorities and industry experts said. The Middle Corridor, officially known as the Trans-Caspian East-West Middle Corridor, traverses Kazakhstan, crosses the Caspian Sea, and continues through Azerbaijan and Georgia before reaching Europe via Türkiye. The milestone was highlighted by the arrival of the first China-Europe Railway Express South Channel Train at Istanbul's Halkali Station on July 21. Carrying communication equipment, auto parts, and other goods, the train completed its journey in 22 days after departing from Chongqing on June 29. The other train, departing from Chengdu, is expected to arrive in Istanbul next week. To ensure the timely delivery of the cargo, logistics partners from Türkiye and China optimized scheduling and strengthened coordination, enabling a faster and more resilient trade link. On July 16, Turkish Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced that, following numerous trial runs, regular services have now commenced from the Chinese cities of Chongqing and Chengdu to Istanbul, marking a significant step in the operational expansion of the Middle Corridor. "The trains traveled approximately 3,500 km within China before continuing through Central Asia, crossing the Caspian Sea, and reaching Europe via Türkiye. Each train carries around 2,000 tonnes of cargo," Uraloglu said. The services were launched on an agreement signed between Türkiye's Pasifik Eurasia Logistics Group and China State Railway Group, he said. The minister said Türkiye aims to establish seamless logistics between China and Europe, with a target of running 1,000 trains annually and positioning itself as a central hub in the Eurasian supply chain. "The Middle Corridor is no longer just an idea. It is step by step becoming a real corridor," said Fatih Erdogan, CEO of Pasifik Eurasia, adding that compared to traditional sea routes, the Middle Corridor offers not only a shorter path but also greater controllability. "These trains carry not only containers but also vision, trust, strategy, and a shared future," he said.
