NFL training camp live updates: At what point should we worry about Malik Nabers' availability?
One full week of NFL preseason action is in the books, and there's plenty to talk about.
Giants head coach Brian Daboll said Tuesday Malik Nabers won't practice yet again, this time in joint sessions with the Jets, and this is becoming a bigger thing by the day. Nabers hasn't practiced since leaving practice on Aug. 6, which he said at the time was part of "the process."
What's more, Daboll wouldn't answer questions Tuesday about whether Nabers requires additional tests on his toe at this point. Nabers has dealt with a lingering toe injury since college, which he's acknowledged might ultimately require surgery, but said earlier in camp the Giants have a "great" day-to-day management plan for it.

This is all about his availability for the regular season, so while fans (and Nabers himself) may have been looking forward to potential matchups vs. All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner in joint practices with the Jets, the Giants aren't going to risk it if they don't have to. Nabers caught 109 passes for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns in just 15 games last season as a rookie, and this was with suspect quarterback play. So it's pretty clear that when healthy, the Giants hit a home run on this pick.
But Nabers is pretty much the focal point of their offense. The more time he misses with a yearslong lingering injury, the more eyebrows it's going to raise.

Shedeur Sanders still fourth on Browns' depth chart: It's an unofficial depth chart, so take it with a grain of salt. But even after his solid NFL preseason debut against the Panthers, fifth-round rookie Shedeur Sanders was still listed fourth on the Browns' depth chart Monday, behind presumptive QB1 Joe Flacco, veteran Kenny Pickett and fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel. Flacco and Pickett reportedly won't play in Saturday's second preseason game against the Eagles. So will Sanders start that one? "I'm not there on the game itself," head coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday.
Patriots might have gotten a steal in TreVeyon Henderson: In a quiet moment before the second day of the 2025 NFL Draft, Patriots vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf sat down to review his three favorite players still on the board. He pulled up a reel of 100 or so carries Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson had attempted against what Wolf considered 'good' teams. Wolf didn't make it through all 100. 'I watched 15 runs and I was like, 'What am I doing? This is the guy,'' Wolf told Yahoo Sports on Sunday. 'We have way bigger needs than running back and still do. But it was just an opportunity to get a weapon potentially there in the second round.' Then, in Friday's preseason opener, Henderson took the opening kickoff back 100 yards for a touchdown.
Steelers' Cam Heyward talks hold-in: A standoff between the Steelers and their star defensive tackle is brewing. On Monday, All-Pro tackle Cam Heyward confirmed reports of a hold-in, telling reporters that he was looking for a restructured deal that better represented his 2024 season. The 36-year-old tackle signed a three-year extension with Pittsburgh last September. But Heyward told reporters on Monday that he had told the Steelers at the time to expect him back at the table this year if he was named All-Pro in 2024. Heyward said that he is also weighing longer-term options to get his deal, and might be willing to miss some regular-season games in order to get Pittsburgh to renegotiate. Mets all-time home run leaders: Pete Alonso breaks team record
Pete Alonso now stands alone in New York Mets history. The "Polar Bear" launched his 253rd career home run on Tuesday night to break the tie he was in with Darryl Strawberry for most homers in Mets history. Alonso, the 30-year-old first baseman in his seventh season, accomplished the feat in his 965th game with the Mets. Strawberry played 1,109 games with the Mets over eight seasons. Alonso's record-breaking blast came off the Atlanta Braves' Spencer Strider in the bottom of the third inning Tuesday night, Aug. 12. The homer gave the Mets, who currently hold the last wild-card spot in the National League, a 5-1 lead. Chargers' Ladd McConkey can finally learn from Keenan Allen in person
Even before Keenan Allen returned to the Chargers last week, he was already making an impact in the receiver room. As a rookie, Ladd McConkey studied Allen's practice film on his team-issued iPad, trying to absorb lessons from one of the league's best route runners — the very player whose rookie records for receptions and receiving yards McConkey would eventually surpass. 'You sit in team meetings, pull up your iPad and just watch,' McConkey said. 'Watching his one-on-one stuff from previous years, when he was here. I'm going to check this out, see what he's got.' Now, the 33-year-old Allen and 23-year-old McConkey are inseparable on the field. Throughout practice, McConkey picks the veteran's brain — something he says 'would be dumb if I didn't.' 'He's been doing it at a high level for a long time, so any knowledge I can get, I'm going to take it,' McConkey said. 'He's very decisive and smart… He knows how to win using leverage. He doesn't just run past you — he can set you up at the top, stick and he has great hands.' The prospect of the two playing in the same offense excites McConkey, who says any doubts about their chemistry can be set aside because 'in this offense, we can all move around.' 'That's something that's really good about our receivers, and we're all very versatile.' It was the first day the two were able to participate in the same 11-on-11 session, with McConkey returning from an undisclosed injury that sidelined him for several practices and Allen just coming back last week. Offensive coordinator Greg Roman said Allen's presence has already made a difference, noting, 'We always knew he was a great player, but now that he's here, he's proven it once again… Keenan creates flexibility for us and also makes us stronger.' 'Our training staff is doing a great job acclimating him, getting him up to speed,' Roman said. 'We're taking it slow, in a gradual manner… Getting into football shape.' Running back rotation At times last season, when healthy, the Chargers rotated as many as three deep at running back. With Najee Harris — expected back at some point — and first-round pick Omarion Hampton projected to handle the bulk of the carries, there's still an opening for a third back in Roman's system. With Hampton sitting out Sunday's preseason game against the New Orleans Saints, plenty of reps were up for grabs. Roman called it a 'wide-open competition.' 'There'll definitely be a rotation no matter what happens,' Roman said. 'We'll try to keep guys fresh throughout the game. I think the days of one running back taking every rep are going the way of prehistoric creatures.' That leaves the spot up for grabs between second-year back Kimani Vidal — who started Sunday and finished with six carries for 16 yards — and undrafted rookie Raheim Sanders, who had 10 carries for 42 yards and a touchdown. 'Leaned on the defense in the fourth quarter… A lot of it [drive] was him pounding the rock. He did a really nice job for his first game.' Sanders faces an uphill climb, though. Vidal is coming off a rookie season in which he worked his way from a fringe roster hopeful to contributor, making the 53-man roster and appearing in six games. At practice, the two continue to fight for a good share of reps, with Hassan Haskins mixed in. Etc… Quarterback Trey Lance sat out full-team drills Tuesday, which Roman said was simply a rest day after Lance played most of Sunday's game — stressing it was not injury-related… Guard Mekhi Becton has now missed two full weeks of practice as he continues to 'work through something.' DWCS 77 video: Baysangur Susurkaev 'saves' Dana White's Tuesday with gnarly TKO
"You saved my Tuesday." That's what Dana White told Baysangur Susurkaev after a devastating body kick knockout Tuesday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. Susurkaev (9-0) teeped Murtaza Talha (7-2) in the midsection for the TKO stoppage at 3:04 of Round 1. The middleweight bout took place at Dana White's Contender Series 77, the show's season premiere. Susurkaev, 24, is a training partner of Khamzat Chimaev but he also trains at Kill Cliff FC with the likes of training partner Gregory Rodrigues and others. He stepped in on days' notice for this fight and capitalized on it violently. The finish couldn't come at a time where the UFC brass thirsted that violence more. The previous two fights to kick off the season were lackluster decisions. Susurkaev will likely earn a UFC contract as a result of his performance.
