Inbound Rangers chief Thelwell praised for 'saving' Everton

Glasgow Times25-04-2025

The former defender has praised the director of football for guiding the club through challenging financial times.
Ball believes Thelwell's actions were crucial in maintaining Everton's Premier League status, despite financial constraints imposed by the construction of the new Bramley-Moore Docks Stadium.
His comments come as Thelwell prepares to leave Goodison Park and take up a new role as Rangers' sporting director.
According to Ball, Thelwell's remit changed significantly during his time at the club, as he had to sell high-earning players and bring in cheaper replacements to keep the club afloat.
Ball told the Daily Record: "When Kev came in to the club in 2022, his remit at that time was totally different to the remit he's operating under now as he prepares to leave the club.
"Back then, Everton were trying to compete and move up the table.
"Very quickly, though, I think he realised the club wasn't in the stable position he first thought they were under Farhad Moshiri.
"That's when he had to start moving players out of the football club, which is always the most difficult thing when you've got players on large wages and long contracts."
Ball commended Thelwell's ability to sell players and get good money for them, despite the criticism he faced at the time for undervaluing certain players.
He said: "Looking back, I think you can see he actually did very well to move a lot of these players on and get good money for them.
"But he did get a little bit of stick at the time for undervaluing certain players.
"That, though, was just because the fans weren't fully aware of just how grim the situation at the club actually was."
Ball used the sale of Richarlison to Spurs for £60 million as an example, suggesting that this move was pivotal in saving the club.
He also pointed out the sale of Anthony Gordon to Newcastle for £45 million, which was criticised by fans who felt the club was being shortchanged.
Ball believes that these sales were necessary to avoid a larger points deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules.
He said: "If he didn't find buyers for those players, Everton would probably have received a bigger points deduction for breaching profit and sustainability rules and that would have threatened the takeover that has now thankfully gone through."
Ball acknowledged the immense pressure Thelwell was under and praised his ability to keep Everton competitive despite the financial constraints.
He said: "But Kevin has definitely been operating with a tremendous amount of pressure on his shoulders.
"He's basically been working with both hands tied behind his back for his entire time at the club.
"He's had to move big earners out and bring in cheaper replacements - all the while trying to keep Everton in the Premier League."
Ball ended by praising Thelwell's negotiation skills, pointing to the acquisition of Youssef Chermiti and Beto, which cost the club no money up front.
He said: "He's arrived expecting to have a massive war chest to spend to now having the opposite, where he's forced to sell players while trying to keep the club competitive in the world's richest league."

Gyokeres transfer prediction made by Alan Shearer amid Arsenal and Man Utd links

Viktor Gyokeres finds himself in the middle of a transfer tug of war between Premier League rivals Manchester United and Arsenal and Alan Shearer has shared his thoughts on where could end up Alan Shearer believes Viktor Gyokeres could still sign for Manchester United despite his bitter transfer saga. The Red Devils have long been linked with a move for the Sporting Lisbon forward. He was identified as a major target for United following their goalscoring woes last season. Links intensified following the arrival of former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford. ‌ Premier League rivals Arsenal are also admirers, with Mikel Arteta keen on adding to his attacking options. And giving his verdict on the battle between the two sides, Shearer thinks that United will eventually be successful due to Gyokeres' prior relationship with the Swedish hitman. ‌ Speaking to Betfair, he said: 'They've got Matheus Cunha in and we're going to see a big turnover of players in the next two months at United. They have to get a number of players out, and to do that they have to get a number of players in for that club to have a refresh. 'It's been so bad for so long, but everything came together in a bad way which they didn't want to see this season for Man United. It's a huge pre-season for them in terms of who they're getting in and out. 'The Bryan Mbeumo transfer isn't done yet and I know that other clubs were in for him including Newcastle. Whether Spurs try to hijack that if they get Thomas Frank in, which it seems that'll be the case. 'On Viktor Gyokeres, I'm not surprised at all if they get him because of his work with Sporting and Ruben Amorim before, I think that was always going to be the case. 'They're not in Europe this year, they're not in the Champions League and they're going to have to pay huge wages to get the players and tempt them away from other clubs that are going to be interested in them.' ‌ Gyokeres' future has taken a number of turns over the past week as both United and Arsenal attempt to win the race for his signature. Reports previously claimed that he was willing to go on strike to force a move away from Sporting after they went back on their word to sell him for a modest fee. Sporting Lisbon president Frederico Varandas then broke his silence by claiming that his side would not be bullied into selling their star forward. Gyokeres himself has now spoken, having penned an angry statement on social media. Writing on his Instagram story, Gyokeres wrote: 'There is a lot of talk at the moment, most of it is false. I will speak when the time is right.' Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Gerard Martin speaks out on links with West Ham, Bournemouth and Wolves

Barcelona full-back Gerard Martin has been linked with a string of Premier League clubs, but has talked down a possible move. The 23-year-old only made his Barcelona debut in August last year and already has a La Liga and Copa del Rey win on his CV. The Spain Under-21 international made 42 appearances across all competitions, with 28 coming in La Liga and eight in the Champions League. How much Martin was involved over the last season was something of a surprise, but it has not been enough for Barcelona to be set on keeping him. Football Espana report that the left-back could be available for as little as €12m (£10.2m) and that has alerted a number of potential suitors. West Ham, Bournemouth and Wolves have all been linked with a move for the Spaniard, with the price tag no issue for Premier League clubs. Martin is not talking up a move, though, saying he is only focussed on Barcelona after an encouraging first season in the first team. 'I don't know, these are things that come out,' Martin told Jijantes of the transfer speculation. 'I am happy with my season, and focused on Barcelona. I'm not thinking about anything else, I'm relaxed.' Martin was in action for Spain Under-21s on Wednesday against Slovakia but has returned from international duty after suffering a fractured hand. The three Premier League sides linked with Martin are all in need of a new left-back this summer. More Trending Wolves have sold Rayan Ait-Nouri to Manchester City and will need to replace the Algeria international after selling him for £31.8m. Bournemouth are yet to complete the sale of Milos Kerkez, but he is expected to make a move to Liverpool this summer in a £45m deal. After 11 years at West Ham, Aaron Cresswell has left the club this summer, and while he was no longer a regular starter, the Hammers are looking for a replacement. Cristian Romero appears to take swipe at Tottenham ownership over Ange Postecoglou sacking - just minutes after Thomas Frank was announced

Cristian Romero appeared to take a swipe at the Tottenham ownership with an Instagram post shared just minutes after the club announced Thomas Frank as the new manager. After Spurs confirmed the ex-Brentford boss as Ange Postecoglou 's replacement, Romero took to social media to lament the sacking of the Australian. He wrote: 'Ange, thank you for these two incredible seasons. You're a fantastic coach, but above all, a great person who deserves the best. 'From day one you paved the way despite the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist. 'Beyond everything, we won a trophy and went down in the history of this beautiful club, which is the only thing that matters. 'I wish you the best because you deserve the best, and thank you for everything.' Romero's line about the 'many obstacles that always existed and always will exist' appeared to be a thinly-veiled dig at Daniel Levy and Co. They chose to part ways with Postecoglou almost two weeks after he had led Spurs to their first silverware in 17 years by winning the Europa League final. Most of the Spurs squad have paid tribute to their departed manager, who remains immensely popular with the group despite the 17th-place finish in the Premier League. Frank will now have to motivate the same kind of feeling towards himself among players who adored the Australian, which could be no easy task. Romero's remarks cast further doubt on his future and he could leave for the right price this summer. The Argentine is of interest to Atletico Madrid but Spurs would only consider selling their centre-back for in excess of £60million. After the Europa League final win, Postecoglou had said: 'He (Romero) is a winner. You saw that in all the big games we've had and the lads certainly respect him very highly. 'He makes them walk a bit taller, so yeah from my perspective it is a no-brainer that making sure players like him (stay). 'If he goes, who do you replace him with? There is not too many out there like him.' Frank will now have to attempt to convince him his future still lies in north London despite Postecoglou no longer being at the helm.
