
Climate resilience: CEO speaks about Telenor's increasing focus
Speaking to an audience of policymakers, climate experts, and business leaders, he said that Telenor's climate communication is moving beyond just emergency alerts and now supports wider efforts in preparation and day-to-day operations.
Emphasising the urgency of the climate crisis, he stated that climate change is a present and pressing reality. 'At Telenor, our focus is on enabling action—helping people, businesses, and institutions better understand and respond to climate risks,' he said.
Ashfaque highlighted Telenor Pakistan's role in supporting national emergency efforts, citing the company's contribution in mobility tracking during the Covid-19 pandemic and its collaboration with the institutions like National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) during the devastating 2022 floods.
Building on these efforts, he shared that Telenor is now exploring its role to develop a nationwide disaster communication system. There is need for a system that can provide geo-targeted early warning alerts and enable real-time coordination during crises, enhancing both the precision and efficiency of emergency responses.
Beyond emergency response, Ashfaque highlighted the company's ongoing efforts in environmental sustainability. Since 2019, Telenor has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 23 per cent and is on track to further cut emissions in line with its science-based climate targets. He noted that climate action is fully embedded in Telenor's operations and values.
The company consistently invests in climate-focused communication efforts, hosts expert forums, expands climate-resilient infrastructure, promotes sustainable practices across its supply chain, and reports progress transparently throughout the year.
Ashfaque shared that Telenor aims to continue contributing to climate efforts in Pakistan, with a focus on innovation, collaboration, and steady progress toward greater climate resilience.

‘US-Canada relations'
This is apropos a letter to the Editor from this writer carried by the newspaper yesterday. It is important to note that until recently, the two countries were bound by one of the strongest economic partnerships in the world. In 2024, total goods trade between them reached USD 761.8 billion, with US exports to Canada worth USD 349.9 billion and imports from Canada at USD 411.9 billion. Agriculture alone accounted for USD 28.4 billion in US exports, including nearly USD 800 million in dairy. Canada sent USD 124 billion worth of energy, machinery, and vehicles to the United States, while the USMCA trade agreement favored US dairy producers by granting 3.6 percent tariff-free access to Canada's USD 15 billion dairy market and removing restrictions that had long frustrated American farmers. This trade was not just numbers—it represented communities, livelihoods, and a shared prosperity that outsiders often described as two halves of one whole. That reality began to unravel early in President Trump's second term when he abruptly imposed tariffs on Canadian goods, starting at 10 percent and then climbing to 35 percent, with threats of even higher duties on dairy. In public speeches, he floated the idea of Canada becoming the 'cherished 51st State' of the United States. The comments were not taken lightly in Ottawa. Prime Minister Mark Carney declared that 'Canada is not for sale and will never be the 51st state.' Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau described the remarks as humiliating, while Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland called the US actions 'economic warfare.' Qantas fined $58 million over illegally sacking 1,800 workers during pandemic
SYDNEY: Qantas Airways, Australia's largest airline, has been fined A$90 million ($58.64 million) for illegally sacking 1,800 ground staff and replacing them with contractors during the COVID-19 pandemic, a court ruled on Monday. In imposing a penalty close to the maximum available for breaching Australia's workplace laws, Federal Court of Australia Judge Michael Lee said it was to ensure it 'could not be perceived as anything like the cost of doing business'. 'My present focus is on achieving real deterrence (including general deterrence to large public companies which might be tempted to 'get away' with contravening conduct because the rewards may outweigh the downside risk of effective remedial responses,' Lee said in a summary judgment. He said A$50 million of the penalty would be paid to the Transport Workers' Union, which brought the case on behalf of the 1,820 staff fired by Qantas during the pandemic. It comes around nine months after Qantas and the Union agreed on a A$120 million settlement for the sacked workers. Qantas shares were down 0.13% in early trade.
