Gold ETFs to Remain Strong Despite the Stock Market Rally

Globe and Mail7 days ago
Rising global trade tensions and fears over ballooning fiscal debt are driving investors toward safe-haven assets, strengthening gold's position as a key refuge. This has led analysts in a Reuters poll to significantly raise their gold price forecasts, as quoted on Yahoo Finance.
Upgraded Gold Forecasts
In a recent poll of 40 analysts and traders, the median forecast for gold in 2025 rose to $3,220 per troy ounce from $3,065 in the previous survey. The 2026 projection climbed to $3,400, a notable increase from $3,000. Spot gold has already gained 27% year to date, hitting a record $3,500 per ounce in April as U.S.-China trade tensions intensified.
David Russell of GoldCore suggested that if concerns around U.S. fiscal policy deepen, gold could realistically reach $4,000 by end-2026, as quoted on Reuters.
Political and Fiscal Turmoil Fuel Demand
Investor demand for gold has also been driven by uncertainty over trade deadlines with major U.S. partners and growing fiscal fears. These were recently inflamed by the passage of Trump's 'One Big Beautiful Bill,' expected to add $3.3 trillion to the national debt, according to nonpartisan analysts, per the Reuters article.
Still, gold remains below its April highs. Julius Baer analyst Carsten Menke noted that the market is undergoing a short-term consolidation, lacking an immediate catalyst to resume its rally, as quoted in the above-mentioned source.
However, the prospects for gold are still bright. Analysts point to central bank buying as a key driver behind gold's continued strength, reflecting a broader strategy to reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar. China has increased its gold reserves for eight successive months, while an ECB survey showed that nearly 40% of central banks are acquiring gold due to geopolitical risks.

If You'd Invested $1,000 in VIG 5 Years Ago, Here's How Much You'd Have Today

Key Points The Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF has produced impressive net growth since the middle of 2020, at least closely trailing growth tech stocks. While it's paid good dividends during this period, most of these gains have come from capital appreciation. Although properly categorized as a dividend fund, VIG may be better used for a different purpose, with another ETF meeting your immediate investment income needs. 10 stocks we like better than Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF › Growth stocks such as Nvidia and Broadcom may have dominated headlines in recent years due to their huge artificial intelligence (AI)-driven gains. It's not like dividend stocks completely faltered during that stretch, though. Many performed pretty well during that period, too, as evidenced by the performance of the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF (NYSEMKT: VIG) over the course of the past five years. Then and now The graphic below tells the tale. Had you invested $1,000 in the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation fund in August of 2020, today you'd have $1,640 plus all the dividends it paid in the meantime. And if you'd reinvested those dividend payments in more shares of VIG, your $1,000 investment would be worth $1,800 now. VIG data by YCharts. The dividend payments for this exchange-traded fund (ETF) have also grown during this time. July's quarterly payment of $0.87 per share is well above the same quarter's payment of only $0.60 in 2020, in line with this fund's actual dividend growth during this five-year period. Not the best ETF for dividend income In this vein, you should know that while this Vanguard fund prioritizes reliable dividend growth over high yields or capital appreciation, Vanguard Dividend Appreciation also offers the latter at least as well as most other dividend-oriented ETFs. Only the Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (NYSEMKT: VYM) has fared better for the past five years, and only by a slight margin. Credit a quirk of the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF's underlying S&P U.S. Dividend Growers Index, mostly. It excludes the highest-yielding one-fourth of tickers that would otherwise be eligible for inclusion in the index. Standard & Poor's fears these high yields suggest their particular companies may be facing growth headwinds. Removing these highest-yielding names from the mix, of course, also dials back this ETF's average dividend yield. VIG's trailing yield right now is a little less than 1.7%, which isn't much for anyone looking for above-average investment income. Point being, this fund is best used as a defensive, quality-capital-growth holding. Should you invest $1,000 in Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF right now? Trump says Intel CEO has an 'amazing story' days after calling for his resignation

Less than a week after demanding his resignation, President Donald Trump is now calling the career of Intel's CEO is an 'amazing story.' Shares of Intel, which slid last week after CEO Lip-Bu Tan came under fire from the U.S. president, bounced higher before the opening bell Tuesday. The attack from Trump came after Sen. Tom Cotton sent a letter to Intel Chairman Frank Yeary expressing concern over Tan's investments and ties to semiconductor firms that are reportedly linked to the Chinese Communist Party and the People's Liberation Army. Cotton asked Intel if Tan had divested from the companies to eliminate any potential conflict of interest. Trump said on the Truth Social platform Thursday that, 'The CEO of Intel is highly CONFLICTED and must resign, immediately. There is no other solution to this problem. Thank you for your attention to this problem!' Tan was named Intel CEO in March and it is unclear if he has divested his interests in the chip companies. Tan said in a message to employees that there was misinformation circulating about his past roles at Walden International and Cadence Design Systems and said that he'd 'always operated within the highest legal and ethical standards.' After a Monday meeting with Tan at the White House, Trump backed off his demand that Tan resign without hesitation. 'I met with Mr. Lip-Bu Tan, of Intel, along with Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, and Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent,' Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. 'The meeting was a very interesting one. His success and rise is an amazing story. Mr. Tan and my Cabinet members are going to spend time together, and bring suggestions to me during the next week. Thank you for your attention to this matter!' Shares of Intel rose gained more than 3% in premarket trading. The economic and political rivalry between the U.S. and China are increasingly focused on computer chips, AI and other digital technologies that are expected to shape future economies and military conflicts.
