Plans for £2.7m transformation of Troon's pool submitted
The £2.7m project aims to secure the venue's future as a modern, accessible hub for community sport, health, and wellbeing.
Architects Holmes Miller, set out proposals for a significant extension, full internal refurbishment, and external recladding of the council-owned facility on Jubilee Road.
Background works have been ongoing, through engagement with council leisure services, staff, and user representatives, in a bid to ensure the plans are linked to the wishes of the community and operational priorities.
One of the most notable changes is a dramatic expansion of the 'dry-side' faciilities on offer.
The existing fitness gym, currently just 95m² and described as small, awkwardly shaped, and poorly suited to modern use, would be replaced by a 260m² purpose-designed space.
The new gym will feature cardio, strength, and free-weight zones, contemporary interior finishes, improved lighting, and enhanced ventilation to create a bright, energising environment.
Alongside it, a dedicated multi-purpose fitness studio will be introduced to cater for group exercise classes, functional training, and other flexible activities – a provision currently missing from the facility.
Council officers say this expansion is intended to meet growing community demand for high-quality gym and studio spaces, increase participation in fitness activities, and boost the venue's commercial viability.
Another key part of the plans is a complete overhaul of the changing facilities. The current pool side changing areas – split into separate male and female spaces – have been dubbed outdated, inefficient, and unwelcoming.
These would be replaced by a modern, mixed-sex 'changing village' that the developers say will improve privacy and inclusivity for all users, including families, people with disabilities, and older adults.
The reconfigured plan will also reduce awkward spaces, improve circulation, and clearly separate wet and dry activity zones.
A new dry changing area will be created specifically for gym and studio users, providing appropriate support for the expanded fitness facilities.
Externally, the pool building will be reclad to improve energy efficiency, reduce maintenance needs, and give the venue a modern appearance.
The proposals reference the town's distinctive use of red and cream sandstone, suggesting a modern interpretation of this palette to harmonise the extension with its surroundings while giving the building a stronger civic identity.
The main entrance and frontage will be redesigned to create a more inviting arrival point for visitors and a clearer connection to the town's public realm.
Troon Swimming Pool has been a fixture in the town for decades, opening in the early 1990s to replace the outdoor swimming 'pond' on the seafront, which first welcomed bathers in 1931.
The outdoor pool was demolished in the late 1980s, but its adjacent Italian Rock Garden remains as a public amenity.
The current indoor facility sits just a short walk from the seafront, close to public transport links, and is well-used by both residents and visitors.
A modest 90m² extension was added in the early 2000s to create the present gym, but demand for fitness provision has since outgrown the space.

If approved, the refurbishment and extension would be delivered while maintaining the building's core function as a swimming and leisure centre.
The council says the investment will help secure the site's long-term viability in an increasingly competitive leisure market and ensure Troon residents continue to benefit from high-quality public sports facilities.

Bring your student ID and results (this can be an email or printout) and show them to the cashier when you order. The offer is valid to eat-in or walk-in collect. The New York-Italian chain is offering a free margherita pizza for students, for one day only. You can claim the freebie, which normally costs £11.75, by showing proof of 2025 exam results when dining in. The offer runs all day on 14th August for A-level students and all day on 21st August for GCSE students. This new pizza spot at 3 Henrietta Street in Covent Garden is offering free dessert to students on and around A-level results day. All you have to do is buy a pizza, such as the iconic Potato Pizza, Ndjua with rocket and Pecorino or the Covent Garden Vegan, and then claim a free sweet treat by showing your results. Dessert options include a Skillet Cookie with chocolate chip ice cream and white chocolate sauce or an English Rhubarb Knickerbocker Glory with whipped cream, poached rhubarb and Madagascan vanilla ice cream. The offer is running from August 14 to August 17. Students can claim a free iced matcha latte worth £4.50 on A-level results day, choosing from a selection of over 20 flavours. All you need to do to redeem your free drink is show your results and student ID at the cash desk. The offer applies to one free drink per persona and will be available at all Bird & Blend stores between 11am and 5pm. Scottish Government panned for lack of Israel-linked arms firm checks
A Freedom of Information request has revealed that two major arms companies in receipt of Scottish Enterprise grants – Italian arms giant Leonardo and American multinational Raytheon Systems – haven't received a human right due diligence check since October 2019 This funding comes despite both firms continue to supply Israel with weapons amid its genocide in Gaza. In that timeframe, both firms have also been in receipt of Scottish public money – Leonardo received £786,125 in 2023 while Raytheon Systems, which has a factory in Glenrothes, was given £500k in the first half of 2024. Leonardo produces laser targeting systems for Lockheed Martin, which sells the F-35 jets Israel, and Raytheon makes Paveway II guided missiles which are also used by Israel. Bae Systems received a check in February 2024. In response, human rights charity Amnesty International told The National that the 'more we learn' about the checks 'the more concerning it becomes' that Scottish Enterprise and Scottish ministers are defending the process. Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater, meanwhile, said it was 'shocking', adding: 'There is no point in having human rights checks at all if they are never carried out.' In total, Scottish Enterprise has given £8 million to 13 companies involved in weapons manufacturing since 2019. The Scottish Government has repeatedly insisted that no public funding goes towards the manufacturing of munitions specifically but other areas these companies operate in, including research, training and apprenticeships. Scottish Enterprise, meanwhile, has strongly denied its human rights checks are not adequate. However, that has been called into question given that, of the 199 human rights checks between 2021 and 2023, no firm has ever failed. When pressed on the issue in an exclusive interview with The National last weekend, First Minister John Swinney defended the grants. 'We won't support the production of munitions. That's our hard line. And we get criticised for taking that hard line, and I'm very confident that hard line is applied,' he said. The First Minister was then pressed on the argument that any funding – even if ring-fenced by the Scottish Government – will directly help a company's cash flow and could, hypothetically, free up money to be used elsewhere, including in the building of munitions. 'I understand that point. But there are also defence requirements of Scotland. Scotland is part of an island nation. We require, for example, shipbuilding resources to support the maritime defense of the United Kingdom because nobody wants to see us vulnerable to an attack from Russia. I certainly don't want to,' he responded. An Amnesty International spokesperson said: "Amnesty is aware from our own research that payments were made to companies known to supply Israel without a new check being triggered by the unfolding genocide in Gaza. 'Alarmingly, that is the process Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Government attempted to characterise as robust and well aligned to international standards. The recent in-house review of the human rights checks recommended some improvements, but unsurprisingly they don't go far enough. We will be meeting with Scottish Enterprise in the coming weeks to take these concerns forward." Slater, meanwhile, said it 'flies in the face of any kind of due diligence'. "These are some of the biggest arms companies in the world. They have armed human rights abusers and dictatorships and some have directly enabled and profited from the genocide in Gaza,' she said. "They should not be receiving public money in the first place, and the Scottish Government absolutely should not be setting up tests to win favourable headlines while refusing to actually implement them. "How can we trust a word they say on ensuring they are applying human rights standards when they are refusing to even ask the right questions of those they are giving public money to?" Scottish Enterprise has been approached for comment.

Man City's £100million club-record signing has penned a season-long loan deal with Everton Celtic reportedly considered a stunning loan deal for Jack Grealish before the Man City star joined Everton for the season. And incredibly, The Athletic claims Celtic were among a number of clubs who had "expressed an interest", but the playmaker "never seriously considered a move to Scotland." West Ham, Italian champions Napoli and Turkish giants Fenerbahce were also in the running for his signature. Grealish declared "there was only one place he wanted to go" after David Moyes sold him on a move to the Hill Dickinson Stadium. However, Grealish hopes kickstarting his career at Everton will help him win back his place in the Three Lions squad ahead of next year's World Cup. Meanwhile Hoops Treble winner Dedryck Boyata has officially retired from football at the age of 34. The Belgian defender joined Celtic from Man City in 2015 and won eight trophies in four years at Parkhead. He had a three-year stint in Germany with Bundesliga club Hertha Berlin before returning to his homeland with Club Brugge in 2022. Boyata has been without a club for seven months after ripping up his contract with Brugge and has now decided to hang up the boots.
