Industries minister Harshwardhan Chauhan says Centre not distributing charity to Himachal
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh industries minister Harshwardhan Chauhan on Monday said that the central govt is not distributing charity to Himachal Pradesh, but the state is only getting its share, like all other 29 states of the country.
Responding to the statements made by BJP MPs Anurag Thakur, Suresh Kashyap, and others that the central govt is providing sufficient funds to Himachal, the industries minister clarified that if Himachal is getting funds under the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, or MGNREGA, it is the right of the state. "It is not the case that Himachal started getting these funds only when the BJP came to power in the Centre.
Himachal used to get the same funds even when the previous govt was at the Centre as per the set pattern," he added.
The minister, however, accused the central govt of not releasing funds to the state govt, especially around Rs 10,000 crore under the post-disaster needs assessment (PDNA), though the state govt sent the claims to the Centre in the financial year 2023-24. He claimed that the central govt is indirectly benefiting other states ruled by the BJP or its allies.
Chauhan questioned the BJP leadership in Himachal about whether they got any funds or schemes sanctioned for the hill state other than what the state is getting under the existing schemes. The cabinet minister also held former chief minister and current leader of opposition Jai Ram Thakur, as well as the previous BJP govt, responsible for putting Himachal into a financial mess and a vicious cycle of loans.

The minister, however, said that since formation of Jharkhand, there hasn't been any focused approach to uplift their socio-economic conditions. "I believe the condition of Harijan (SC) community is no less better than the PVTGs. While for tribal welfare, we have TAC, a body to recommend about their welfare schemes to the govt and other interventions, SCs continue to lag behind," he said, adding that recently he had also written a letter to the CM in this regard. "In 2018, previous BJP govt had formed SC commission before 2019 assembly elections, but it largely remained defunct. It was BJP's ploy to garner SC votes. However, our alliance govt will now work towards them," he said, referring to a proposal for SC welfare in this year's state budget. He also demanded installation of a statue of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar be installed in the new assembly and high court premises, and hostels for Scheduled Caste students on the lines of the one that exists for tribals.

Delhi govt to clear pending applications for pensions
New Delhi: With nearly 80,000 applications from senior citizens awaiting approval under the govt's monthly pension scheme, social welfare minister Ravindra Indraj Singh has directed the department to clear all pending applications within 15 days. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The minister has also instructed the social welfare department to appoint an independent agency to conduct a door-to-door verification of nearly six lakh existing beneficiaries. The aim is to ensure that only eligible individuals continue to receive financial assistance. According to officials, the department had invited applications in Dec 2024 from senior citizens eligible for the pension scheme. Although the scheme has a cap of 5.3 lakh beneficiaries aged 60 and above, only 4.3 lakh are currently registered. The online portal for registration was closed once the number of applicants reached 80,000. Applicants were also required to obtain a recommendation from their area legislator at the time of applying. More than five months have passed since the applications were received, yet the department has not completed the verification process. "Each form needs to be thoroughly checked to ensure the applicant meets the eligibility criteria. The minister has issued strict instructions to expedite the process and ensure eligible applicants start receiving their pensions immediately," said an official. "This process will also help determine how many slots are still available. At the same time, a physical verification drive will begin soon to weed out ineligible beneficiaries, making room for more deserving applicants," the official added. The agency tasked with the verification will be paid Rs 100 per beneficiary. A mobile application, integrated with the e-district portal, will be developed to enable seamless data collection during the verification process. To qualify for the old-age pension, applicants must be over 60 years of age, residents of Delhi for at least five years, and have a family income of less than Rs 1 lakh per annum. Under the scheme, those aged between 60 and 69 years receive Rs 2,000 per month, while those 70 and above are entitled to Rs 2,500. Sources said the Delhi govt spends over Rs 1,200 crore annually on the old-age pension scheme for eligible senior citizens.

Preliminary work begins at KRS dam despite opposition
Mandya: Despite strong opposition from farmers, locals, and various organisations, preliminary work on the controversial Cauvery Aarti project has commenced quietly at Brindavan Gardens in the near Mysuru. During a meeting on Friday, in the zilla panchayat, district minister N Cheluvarayaswamy acknowledged the widespread opposition to the Rs 92 crore project. He praised the united stand by farmers and local groups and assured that the matter would be taken up with the deputy chief minister and chief minister before proceeding further. However, contradicting those assurances, groundwork for the project began over the weekend. Workers from Gadag and Hassan have been engaged on-site, for the past three days. The area earmarked for the project is located near the boathouse. If this continues, we will be forced to protest in front of the dam. We don't need a project that puts the safety of the dam and the environment at risk.
