Mamata Banerjee's trusted aide, a lightning rod for controversies: Why Firhad Hakim is again receiving brickbats

Indian Express8 hours ago

He is one of Mamata Banerjee's trusted leaders, but Firhad Hakim often leaves his leader and party in a spot of bother with his comments. Affectionately known as 'Bobby da' in the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Hakim, who triggered a row a few months ago by saying that Muslism would one day 'become a bigger majority than what the current majority population is', hasstirred the pot again with his comments targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Operation Sindoor.
The four-time MLA sparked outrage on Saturday after he questioned the success of Operation and claimed that Modi had halted military action against Pakistan as he feared a 'big nation' would label him 'kapurush (coward)'. The BJP was quick to latch on to the remarks, with the party's state chief, Sukanta Majundar, saying that Hakim's criticism stemmed from 'an inability to digest such an operation', especially due to the lack of such actions during the UPA era.
Hakim's political rise has been meteoric. Born in a family that traces its ancestry to Gaya in Bihar, the 66-year-old began his political career in the late 1990s as a councillor in the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and, in 2021, became the first Muslim to occupy the post of Kolkata Mayor since Independence. He first entered the Assembly in 2009 after winning the Alipore bypoll. He then successfully contested the 2011 Assembly polls from Kolkata Port, a seat he has retained since then. His influence in the port area is so extensive that he is considered to have the final word there.
After the exit of Mukul Roy in 2017 and the arrest of former Bengal minister Partha Chatterjee in 2022 in connection with the alleged teacher recruitment scam, Hakim is said to have solidified his position as one of Banerjee's trusted lieutenants. Since the TMC first came to power in 2011, he has been a part of her Cabinet and held important portfolios such as Urban Development and Municipal Affairs. He also serves as the Chairman of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Hakim is also known to organise one of Kolkata's most popular Durga Pujas, in his neighbourhood of Chetla, where Banerjee is a regular visitor.
List of controversies
Hakim's latest remarks are the latest in a long list of controversial comments that he has made in his two-decade political career, sometimes even leaving his own party red-faced. In 2016, Hakim, in an interview with Pakistani daily Dawn, referred to his constituency as 'mini-Pakistan'. However, he maintained that his comments were not accurately reported.
The same year, Hakim's name popped up in the Narada sting operation after he was allegedly seen accepting bribes on video. The following year, the CBI questioned him in connection with the case and arrested him after the 2021 Assembly polls. The TMC leader received bail from the Calcutta High Court in the case in May 2021.
In 2023, the CBI raided Hakim's house in connection with alleged irregularities in KMC recruitment, prompting him to accuse the BJP of 'using central agencies to harass him over his refusal to bow down before them'.
Last November, Hakim was forced to apologise after he faced sharp criticism for his alleged derogatory remarks about the BJP's Haroa bypoll candidate Rekha Patra, an alleged sexual harassment victim from Sandeshkhali. The following month, he claimed that Muslims did not consider themselves a minority. 'We believe that with the blessings of the Almighty, one day we will become a bigger majority than what the current majority population is,' he said, reportedly even leaving Banerjee upset. The comment led to the TMC distancing itself from Hakim and saying that his remarks 'do not reflect the party's position or ideology'.
Seen by many as an 'one-man army' in the port area, which comprises areas such as Khiderpore and Metiabruz, Hakim's propensity to get into controversies has failed to diminish his stature within the TMC as its powerful minority face and key strategist.

Political Row Erupts After Man Linked To 2024 Bangladesh Protests Found On Bengal Voter List

Last Updated: The man, identified as Newton Das, reportedly took part in the 2024 protests in Bangladesh that triggered a regime change. He was found on the voter list in West Bengal's Kakdwip. A fresh political storm erupted in West Bengal after a person allegedly involved in last year's student-led protests in Bangladesh that resulted in the ouster of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina turned out to be a voter from the state's Kakdwip area. The man, identified as Newton Das, appeared in several images circulating on social media showing him taking part in the 2024 protests in Bangladesh, which triggered a regime change. The protests were triggered by a controversial quota system for government jobs. However, Newton insisted that he was an Indian citizen and showed documents, including a PAN card and Aadhaar card, to support his claim. However, he did not clarify on whether he lived in India or Bangladesh. 'Unexpectedly Got Caught Up' 'I had travelled to Bangladesh in 2024 for some issues related to our ancestral property, but I unexpectedly got caught up in the revolution there. I have been a voter in Kakdwip since 2014," he was quoted by news agency PTI as saying in a video message. 'Although I lost my voter card in 2017, I managed to get a new one the following year with help from the local MLA, Manturam Pakhira. I also cast my vote during the 2016 West Bengal Assembly elections." However, Newton's cousin Tapan offered a contradictory account, saying Newton was born in Bangladesh and exercises voting rights in both countries. 'Niutan was born in Bangladesh and holds voting rights in both countries. He came to India after the pandemic to sell some ancestral land and has stayed here since. He should be held responsible for registering as a voter in both places, that's clearly not right," Tapan told reporters. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seized on the controversy, accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of encouraging illegal immigration to manipulate electoral outcomes. 'This is the TMC blueprint — flood Bengal's voter rolls with illegal infiltrators and secure elections with ghost votes," the West Bengal BJP said on X. Union Minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar said, 'Another shining example of the so-called 'Egiye Bangla Model"! The same Newton who was seen wielding a stick during Bangladesh's quota reform movement is now a registered voter in Kakdwip, West Bengal!" 'Thousands of Bangladeshi 'Newtons" voting in Bengal—courtesy of Mamata Banerjee's infiltration theory and appeasement politics. With illegal voters and these lathi-wielders miscreants as her support base, she's not running West Bengal… she's scripting a blueprint for Greater Bangladesh," he added. Another shining example of the so-called 'Egiye Bangla Model"!The same Newton who was seen wielding a stick during Bangladesh's quota reform movement is now a registered voter in Kakdwip, West Bengal! Thanks to the special encouragement of the failed Chief Minister… — Dr. Sukanta Majumdar (@DrSukantaBJP) June 7, 2025 His statements were echoed by the Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who said there are lakhs of Bangladeshi nationals who are included in the voter rolls of West Bengal. BJP Mathurapur organisational district secretary Sanjay Das alleged that 'the Trinamool Congress is actively helping Bangladeshi infiltrators to enter India. In response, the TMC rejected the allegations, shifting the blame to the Centre and the Border Security Force (BSF), which guards the Indo-Bangladesh border. 'Our state government will do its part, but it's up to the Union government to ensure security," TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said. Debashis Das, TMC's Sundarbans organisational district student wing president, was seen cutting cake with Das in a viral birthday party photo. " had no idea he was involved in the Bangladesh protests. The photo going around was taken at a birthday celebration with many people present. If someone like him managed to cross the border, it just shows the BSF isn't doing its job properly," he clarified. Sharmishta Panoli row: Wajahat Khan Qadri, man who filed case against influencer, arrested in Kolkata

The Kolkata Police on Monday arrested Wajahat Khan Qadri, the man who filed a case against social media influencer and law student Sharmistha Panoli, reported India Today. According to the Kolkata Police, Khan's police complaint led to the arrest of the social media influencer. Khan was allegedly on the run since 1 June after a series of raids. Earlier, a case was registered against Wajahat Khan at the Golf Green Police Station in Kolkata for allegedly spreading hate speech and hurting religious sentiments via his social media activity. Despite the police serving Khan three notices at his Garden Reach residence and directing him to appear for questioning, he remained on the run until his arrest. Khan's arrest comes amid mounting controversy over Panoli's arrest, who was held from Gurugram on 30 May by Kolkata Police, following a controversial video she posted on social media which drew strong reactions. In the video, she allegedly criticised Bollywood celebrities for staying silent on Operation Sindoor. After intense trolling and threats in the comments, Panoli removed the video and issued a public apology on 15 May. Earlier on 3 June, the Calcutta High Court had rejected the interim bail plea of Panoli. On 2 June, Shree Ram Swabhiman Parishad filed a formal complaint against Wajahat Khan with the Kolkata Police, accusing him of using derogatory, inflammatory, and sexually explicit language targeting Hindu deities, religious traditions, and the community at large. In the letter to the Officer-in-Charge of the Garden Reach Police Station, Shree Ram Swabhiman Parishad alleged that Khan in his social media posts referred Hindus by using terms including "rapist cultures" and "urine drinkers". The Hindu body requested the police to take action against Khan under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.

Families roll beedis, cook food while protesting for homes

Mangaluru: With the indefinite dharna launched by the families of Kuppepadavu village in the Mangaluru North constituency, seeking sites and homes, entering its 11th day on Monday, women participating in the protest turned the protest venue into their workplace to roll beedis. Muneer Katipalla, district secretary of CPM, Dakshina Kannada, said that there are hundreds of poor families without their own homes or land who have been waiting for decades, having applied to the panchayat for plots. Six years ago, in a rush before the elections, families were allocated plots and distributed title deeds to 97 families. However, even after six years of receiving the title deeds, the plots were not handed over to the families, he said. Frustrated poor families formed a protest committee under the guidance of local labour organisations and CPM members and started an indefinite protest in front of the Kuppepadavu gram panchayat. Despite holding several sit-ins and protests since Jan, justice was not served. Hence, they organised an indefinite protest, but even after 11 days, the authorities concerned have not responded to their demand, said Muneer. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo "If the youth of coastal districts are engaged in heated debates over communal issues, women labourers have been on a sit-in protest for the past 11 days, demanding the distribution of approved house sites. They are fighting together without any religious bias or Hindu-Muslim conflict. The Hindu and Muslim women are rolling beedis as part of their livelihood together at the protest site. They cook and eat rice gruel from the same pot. This is truly a beautiful scene, teaching a life lesson to the people of the coastal region," he said, urging the local elected representatives to fulfil the demands of families in the village.
