Grieving family proceeds with son's wedding despite tragedy
KOTA BHARU: Although still grieving the loss of three loved ones in a road crash, Hasmah Awang, 60, and her family decided to carry on with her son's wedding, scheduled to take place today in Besut, Terengganu.
She said her third child, Muhd Syafiq Abdul Rahim, 24, solemnised his marriage, accompanied by his youngest sister, Siti Zulaika, 21, and several close friends.
Other family members managed the funeral arrangements for her eldest daughter, Nurul Ain Abdul Rahim, 39, as well as her granddaughter Nur Atikah Najihah Mohd Shah Penilzain, 18, and husband, Mohamad Faris Kamaluddin, 24.
The three were killed in a collision involving a Perodua Myvi and an express bus on Jalan Kuala Krai-Gua Musang yesterday.
'We will hold a tahlil prayer tomorrow, which was initially planned as a reception to welcome our new daughter-in-law,' Hasmah told reporters at Kampung Kayu Rendang, Melor, here today.
Hasmah and her husband, Abdul Rahim Mat Diah, 71, were unable to attend Muhd Syafiq's solemnisation ceremony as they were preparing for the burial, scheduled after Zohor prayers at the Kampung Jambu Merah Cemetery in Kota Bharu.
She said the family is still awaiting the remains of Nurul Ain, while the bodies of Nur Atikah Najihah and Mohamad Faris are expected to be taken to Johor Bahru.
Her other daughter, Siti Zubaidah, 37, said the family was shocked by the incident as they had planned to gather in their hometown for Muhd Syafiq's wedding celebration.
'I first heard about the accident from our youngest sister, but I didn't believe it until Syafiq himself called and showed me a photo of the car they were in,' she said.

Out-of-control Persona hits parked vehicles in Senawang
SEREMBAN: A technician was left counting his losses after two of his cars parked outside his home in Taman Bukit Seri Senawang were struck by an out-of-control vehicle early this morning. The 5.40am incident involved a Toyota Vios, a Perodua Myvi and a Proton Persona. Morning crash in Matunggong injures five

The crash, which occurred at around 8.20am, left the Myvi driver, identified as 32-year-old Khalid Tahar, trapped in his seat before being rescued by firefighters. Kudat Fire and Rescue chief Darickson Galanang said eight personnel were dispatched to the scene, about 50km away, after receiving the emergency call at 8.28am. One male victim was extricated by the fire team, while four others were rescued earlier by Health Ministry medical officers before the fire truck arrived. One of the injured passengers was identified as 42-year-old Mahya Andas, while the identities of the other three remain unknown. Site of fatal Kuala Krai crash known as accident hotspot
KUALA KRAI: The site of a fatal crash that claimed the lives of three family members along Jalan Kuala Krai–Gua Musang near Kampung Sungai Sam on Friday morning is said to be a frequent accident hotspot. Residents and road users claim the area is extremely dark at night due to the absence of street lighting, and that vehicles often travel at dangerously high speeds. A check at the scene revealed a signboard reminding motorists that the speed limit is 90 km per hour. There were also signboards installed several metres before the crash site, warning of a bend ahead and advising motorists to slow down. The location of the crash, which involved a Perodua Myvi and an express bus, was on a downhill curve along a no-overtaking section of the road. Observations also showed that many vehicles were travelling above the speed limit. Hisham Jusoh, 33, a regular user of the route, said the stretch is particularly dangerous at night due to the lack of street lighting and speeding vehicles. "I live in a nearby village and I'm aware this area is dangerous, so it's no surprise that accidents occur here. Many accidents have already happened in this vicinity. "You can see for yourself how fast the vehicles go, and even though there are signboards reminding drivers, they seem to have no effect," he said. Another resident, Ibrahim Juhari, 62, said it was time for the government to install street lights along the road to help prevent further accidents. "It's heartbreaking to hear about this latest incident involving three fatalities, and it happened not far from my shop. Accidents often occur on this stretch, especially at night, because it's very dark and the road is hilly. "It's dangerous even during the day, let alone at night. Vehicles speed down this road without any concern for the consequences," he said. In the 11.30am crash on Friday, the three family members killed were Mohamad Faris Kamaludin, 24, his wife Nur Atikah Najihah Mohd Shah Penilzain, 18, and her mother Nurul Ain Abdul Rahim, 39. The incident occurred when the Perodua Myvi the victims were travelling infrom Gua Musang towards Kota Baru lost control, veered into the opposite lane, and collided with an express bus. The impact left the victims trapped inside the car, and they were pronounced dead at the scene. They were reportedly travelling from Johor to Kelantan to attend the wedding of Nurul Ain's younger sibling.
