Colo-Colo handed 10-game supporter ban after fan deaths before Copa Libertadores tie

New York Times01-05-2025
Chilean soccer club Colo-Colo must play five home matches in continental competition without fans and will also not be allowed supporters for the next five away matches.
The bans were confirmed by CONMEBOL, the organising body of the Copa Libertadores, after two teenage fans were killed in a crush ahead of a Copa Libertadores match last month.

Local police confirmed the deaths of an 18-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy following a confrontation between supporters and police ahead of Colo-Colo's tie against Brazilian side Fortaleza on April 10.
Police general Alex Bahamondes told TVN that the perimeter fence of the stadium had become surrounded by 'approximately 150 fans' ahead of the game.
Colo-Colo's league derby match against Universidad de Chile, which had been scheduled to take place three days after that tie, was postponed as a mark of respect.
Prosecutor Francisco Morales, via Chilean media outlet Emol, said that an investigation has commenced into whether a police car was involved in the deaths.
Despite the incidents ahead of the match, the game kicked off and proceeded normally until its suspension in the 72nd minute, when a group of Colo-Colo fans invaded the pitch amid the situation.
CONMEBOL have awarded Fortaleza a 3-0 victory for the match, which was scoreless when it was abandoned, alongside sanctioning Colo-Colo supporters for a further 10 matches.

The first of the five-match home stadium ban has already been served, as the Santiago-based club drew 1-1 at home to Racing Club of Argentina in their Copa Libertadores group stage match on April 23.
Colo-Colo's only remaining home group game is scheduled against Atletico Bucaramanga on May 30, preceded by trips to Fortaleza and Racing Club — for which they will be unable to bring away supporters.
The Chilean club are bottom of the group on two points, two behind third-place Fortaleza and Racing Club, with Atletico Bucaramanga leaders on five points.
Colo-Colo have also been fined $80,000 (£60,000) for the episode.

Transfers Latest: Manchester City eye €100M raid for Rodrygo as Club facing imminent exits

After Grealish gone to Everton, and McAtee and Savinho expected to leave the club, Manchester City are eyeing a stunning transfer coup with making a move for Real Madrid's Rodrygo. By Ravi Kumar Jha Published on August 11, 2025, 18:50 IST Manchester City could be set to make one of the blockbuster moves of the summer, with Real Madrid's Brazilian star Rodrygo emerging as their dream target. According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Pep Guardiola is a huge admirer of the 23-year-old winger and is prepared to pounce following imminent exits at the Etihad. With Jack Grealish already gone and midfield talents James McAtee and Savinho also expected to depart soon, City are looking to refresh their attacking options — and Rodrygo sits firmly at the top of their wishlist. Romano reports that Real Madrid would be willing to sanction Rodrygo's departure if the player himself decides to leave, with a fee in the region of €100 million being discussed. However, the situation is far from straightforward, as the Brazilian international is said to be happy in Madrid and finds it emotionally difficult to say goodbye to the club where he has won multiple major honours. City have made a habit of making big statements in the transfer market in recent years, and should this deal progress, it would be yet another power move by them. Nicolas Jackson: Chelsea ready to sell striker with Newcastle and Tottenham interested

Chelsea are ready to explore the sale of Nicolas Jackson before the end of the transfer window. Jackson was left out of the Blues squad for their friendly with Bayer Leverkusen amid uncertainty over his future. The striker has been deemed surplus to requirements and is keen to assess exit options, with Tottenham and Newcastle registering an interest in the Senegal forward. Tottenham are known to be fans of Jackson, but they would only consider a move should Richarlison leave the club this Brazilian, who struggled with injuries and form last season, has rejected interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia. Newcastle are also interested in Jackson as they identify potential replacements for Alexander Isak, who is heavily linked with a move to Liverpool. Speaking this week, Blues head coach Enzo Maresca refused to rule out the possibility of Jackson leaving Stamford Bridge. 'When the transfer window is open, unfortunately or fortunately, anything can happen. This also involves Nico's situation,' Maresca said. 'At the moment we also had two strikers arrive, Joao [Pedro] and Liam [Delap]. So we will see what happens.' The Magpies have had a frustrating summer, missing out on a number of key targets, but are continuing to push for a deal for Yoane Wissa. They appear to have lost out to Man United in the race for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, and have now turned their attention to Jackson. The 23-year-old scored 10 Premier League goals last season but has fallen down the pecking order following the arrivals of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap. Chelsea are now prepared to part with Jackson as they look to sanction departures following another busy summer of spending. Maresca's side have spent over £200 million as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of a return to the Champions League next season. The Blues have managed to offset much of their spending by selling a number of first-team players, and it remains to be seen how much they will want for Jackson. Djordje Petrovic, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Noni Madueke, Joao Felix, Ishe Samuels-Smith, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Armando Broja have all been sold this summer. Jackson is suspended for the first game of the Premier League season, having been sent off for violent conduct against Newcastle.

Tottenham submit opening proposal for Manchester City's Savinho

Manchester City have seemingly rejected an opening proposal from Tottenham for Brazilian winger Savinho, according to the latest developments. While Tottenham's interest has been apparent for only a matter of days, negotiations have now moved into the bidding stage, with Spurs seemingly receiving encouragement that Savinho would be open to a move to North London. Manchester City, however, remain firm in their own internal valuation and are not prepared to sell unless their demands are met in full for a player they want to keep. The Athletic's David Ornstein and Guillermo Rai reported earlier on Monday that City are not actively pushing for Savinho's sale but are willing to listen to offers. While the player is open to exploring the possibility of a transfer, there has been no formal request from him to leave the Etihad Stadium. Discussions between the clubs have centred on a figure in the region of €50 million, though multiple outlets have indicated City want significantly more. The Manchester Evening News' Simon Bajkowski added that City's stance is that Savinho is worth in excess of £50 million, while The Independent's Richard Jolly stressed that the club still see the winger as an important asset. It is also believed that there is an internal view within Manchester City that Savinho's market value is likely to rise in the coming years, especially given his first performances in English football last season. According to the information of Fabrizio Romano, a first proposal has already been sent by Tottenham worth €50 million for Brazilian international Savinho, although Manchester City are said to 'want more' from a deal. It is detailed that negotiations remain ongoing, with Manchester City open to selling amid Savinho himself being 'keen' on the move to North London, but only on the conditions of Etihad Stadium officials. If Tottenham choose to return with an improved offer, it is expected to be closer to the figures Manchester City are privately quoting – exceeding €60 million before bonuses are possibly included. Such a bid could test Manchester City's resolve, particularly if it arrives well before the end of the summer window, leaving them with time to pursue reinforcements. From Savinho's perspective, the lure of regular Premier League minutes may play a significant role in his decision-making. While Manchester City can offer Champions League football and a consistent push for the biggest of honours under Pep Guardiola, the competition for wide attacking roles remains fierce, and a move could guarantee him a more consistent starting role. With negotiations ongoing, this transfer battle could hinge on Tottenham's willingness to break their own spending thresholds for the summer.
