Irish spirits brands head for US on mass trade mission despite looming tariffs

TWENTY Irish drinks companies have made their way to the US on a mass trade mission.
The firms left Dublin this month to be in the States for this week's Tales of the Cocktail event.
Based in New Orleans, the event is billed as the world's leading cocktail conference, which runs until July 25.
Among the delegation are firms representing Irish beer, cream liqueur, gin, poitín, and vermouth producers.
Bord Bia is hosting the companies at the event as part of a programme of supports for the sector as it deals with difficult trading conditions.
It forms one piece of a global plan that also includes new routes to market as a diversification strategy for Irish drinks companies.
The firms are in the US at a time where uncertainty continues over the future of trade between Ireland and the US, with President Donaly Trump threatening to impose 30 per cent tariffs on European spirits imports.
'The US is an incredibly important market for Irish spirits, worth €860 million to the economy last year,' Bord Bia CEO Jim O'Toole said.
'We hope that this event will drive commercial opportunities for Irish companies and an opportunity to showcase Irish spirits and their potential use in cocktails, a vastly underdeveloped space for Irish companies in the US.'
He added: 'The Irish drinks industry is no stranger to global headwinds with inevitable upturns and downturns, so supporting companies to explore new avenues in the US and abroad at this challenging time is a priority.
"The resilience and ambition of these 20 companies participating in the conference in Louisiana next week is a testament to that spirit.'
The Irish Spirits Showcase at the New Orleans event will feature Dave Mulligan, owner of Bar 1661 in Dublin, Irish whiskey consultant; Jack McGarry, who is co-founder of The Dead Rabbit bar in New York; and Christy Caldwell, owner of The Ordinarie bar in California.
Valentia Island Vermouth from Co. Kerry will use its time at the conference to officially launch its brand into the US market.
'Global reach is essential for attracting the future customers of Ireland and for the long-term development of our drinks industry," Mr O'Toole said.
"While the US remains a vital market, diversification is key to building resilience and sustaining growth," he added.
"We are continuing to work closely with industry partners to ensure that Irish spirits remain front-of-mind for international buyers, regardless of geopolitical uncertainty.'

Cork stout Murphys continues to surge in UK market with double digit growth

Sales of Murphy's Stout have continued to surge in the UK, with the brand experiencing double digit growth there in 2025. Brewing giant Heineken released its 2025 first half results on Monday, with revenues down 5% to €16.9bn for the year after reporting a 0.4% fall in volumes globally during the second quarter. But Cork stout brand Murphy's continues to shine for Heineken. "Distribution gains and new draught placement in the on-trade supported the strong growth of Murphy's Stout," the company said. The UK is the world's largest market for stout, worth more than €1bn. Murphys has enjoyed massive growth in the past 18 months, buoyed further by the international success of rival Guinness pushing increased stout sales. Sales of Murphy's rose by 176% overall in the UK's on-licence trade in 2024. Heineken even launched a new 'Map O'Murphy's' last year, outlining all the places in the UK selling the Cork beverage. Overall, Heineken saw a decline in beer volumes. A dispute with retailers in key European markets like France, Spain, and the Netherlands affected sales despite a summer heatwave and the brewer reported a 0.4% fall in volumes during the second quarter. The disputes are now resolved. Chief executive Dolf van den Brink also welcomed the trade deal agreed between the US and the EU, though Heineken's European produce will still face a 15% tariff entering the US market. Mr van den Brink also said the company is looking to increase cost savings to €500m. "In the first half of 2025, we are ahead of our target by delivering more than €300m of gross savings across variable and fixed expenses. We therefore are increasing our ambition for 2025 to €500 million of gross savings. All regions thus far have contributed in a significant way," he said.

Europe 'capitulated' on US tariff deal, says Ibec CEO

CEO of Ibec Danny McCoy has described the deal reached by the European Union and the United States on trade tariffs as a capitulation by Europe. The agreement will see EU exports taxed at 15% in a bid to resolve a transatlantic tariff stand-off that threatened to explode into a full-blown trade war. The deal was announced following a meeting between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and US President Donald Trump. Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, Mr McCoy said: "The good news, if there is good news on this, is that uncertainty may be dissipating and that's going to be important for people in business to make decisions." However, he said the deal was "fairly punishing" for the EU and added "Europe has capitulated". "It's quite tragic that we are in this situation. If Europe had equal strength, it could have confronted the United States," he said. Mr McCoy said that while the EU is a "strong economic zone", its weakness is that "we cannot defend the European Union". Under the deal, the EU pledged to buy US military equipment and European companies are to invest $600 billion in the US over President Trump's second term. "US businesses are now favoured coming into Europe without tariffs and our European businesses are facing 15%. "In time, this will lead to a lot of changes in terms of businesses having to look at different markets than the United States or suffer significant losses trading with the United States," Mr McCoy said. He also raised concerns for Ireland that goods from the UK entering the US will have a smaller tariff rate of 10%. The US and UK agreed to a trade deal in early May, which included a baseline 10% tariff on most goods exported to the US, with certain exemptions. The agreement includes goods being exported from Northern Ireland. EU-US tariffs deal gives clarity, says minister Minister for Enterprise Peter Burke said that the deal brings clarity and avoids a trade war that could have resulted in 30% tariffs on EU goods. Speaking on the same programme, he said: "It gives certainty which is key, but there's three key areas I think we have to focus on. "We are about four days away, which would have been a 30% tariff for the US and that would have been very significant for all our companies right across the country. "Secondly, I think it avoids a direct trade war because we're very much aware that there was about €100 billion of countermeasures that were ready to be deployed, which would have a very significant effect on Ireland and as well on the north-south economy." Mr Burke added that "the devil is in the detail and we do need to see those key areas, those carve-outs that have been specifically called out by the President of the Commission yesterday". He said that the Irish Government "is very, very clear and has been that tariffs are bad" and said 15% is a "very significant tariff". In relation to pharmaceuticals, Mr Burke said that the understanding is that the 15% tariff "will be a ceiling" subsequent to the US investigation. "Pharmaceuticals are very complex, a lot of the product that is exported over to the US is not a complete product. Almost 70% of it is components of the final product that will come together. "And that's why we do need to ensure that we have a very keen rate to ensure we incentivise innovation in that sector because that's so important for the global economy. "We've about 100,000 employees in Ireland, 130 billion exports in the life science sector and the Government will be bringing forward a separate life science strategy later on this year, which will be key in continuing the investment and offering a very competitive proposition from Ireland's perspective," Mr Burke added.
