Irish spirits brands head for US on mass trade mission despite looming tariffs

TWENTY Irish drinks companies have made their way to the US on a mass trade mission. The firms left Dublin this month to be in the States for this week's Tales of the Cocktail event. Based in New Orleans, the event is billed as the world's leading cocktail conference, which runs until July 25. Among the delegation are firms representing Irish beer, cream liqueur, gin, poitín, and vermouth producers. Bord Bia is hosting the companies at the event as part of a programme of supports for the sector as it deals with difficult trading conditions. It forms one piece of a global plan that also includes new routes to market as a diversification strategy for Irish drinks companies. The firms are in the US at a time where uncertainty continues over the future of trade between Ireland and the US, with President Donaly Trump threatening to impose 30 per cent tariffs on European spirits imports. 'The US is an incredibly important market for Irish spirits, worth €860 million to the economy last year,' Bord Bia CEO Jim O'Toole said. 'We hope that this event will drive commercial opportunities for Irish companies and an opportunity to showcase Irish spirits and their potential use in cocktails, a vastly underdeveloped space for Irish companies in the US.' He added: 'The Irish drinks industry is no stranger to global headwinds with inevitable upturns and downturns, so supporting companies to explore new avenues in the US and abroad at this challenging time is a priority. "The resilience and ambition of these 20 companies participating in the conference in Louisiana next week is a testament to that spirit.' The Irish Spirits Showcase at the New Orleans event will feature Dave Mulligan, owner of Bar 1661 in Dublin, Irish whiskey consultant; Jack McGarry, who is co-founder of The Dead Rabbit bar in New York; and Christy Caldwell, owner of The Ordinarie bar in California. Valentia Island Vermouth from Co. Kerry will use its time at the conference to officially launch its brand into the US market. 'Global reach is essential for attracting the future customers of Ireland and for the long-term development of our drinks industry," Mr O'Toole said. "While the US remains a vital market, diversification is key to building resilience and sustaining growth," he added. "We are continuing to work closely with industry partners to ensure that Irish spirits remain front-of-mind for international buyers, regardless of geopolitical uncertainty.' The Thai capital is all about rooftop bars, and not just any rooftop – we're talking sky-high rooftops, hundreds of metres above the honk and glitter of the Bangkok streets. One of the best of these is Sky, an open-air bar on the 63rd floor of the Lebua building, a place jam-packed with wow factor from the moment you step out of the lift. The views up here are incredible, of course, perched as you are 250 metres above the ground. At night, Bangkok's bright lights just seem to stretch on forever. The cocktails are tasty too, if a little on the pricey side for BKK. 1055 Si Lom Road, Si Lom; see Dublin, Ireland Bar 1661 The chances of stumbling upon Bar 1661 accidentally are slim to none, but this Dublin bar stands head-and-shoulders above the rest. Though the impeccable cocktails are made with quirky components such as miso butter, dehydrated chillies and bone marrow, there's zero pretentiousness – just well-worn bar stools, dark walls and chatty bartenders. Caribbean Club, hidden behind a wooden door down an El Raval alley, calls itself a 'ronería' – a rum bar – and it stocks an enviable selection, though really you can order whatever you fancy. Styled as a cabin on an old-time cruise ship, it's a cosy bolthole just off La Rambla but a million nautical miles away. It kicks up the energy late at night with an eclectic lineup of DJs and live music, but there's always space to tuck away for a more relaxed night out. A favourite among locals and visitors alike, the airy, high-ceilinged space is inviting, with an industrial vibe softened by palm tree-patterned wallpaper. Recommended is Sweet Liberty's pina colada, made with three different rums, coconut cream and Jamaican coffee, and you can't visit without an order of their addictive cauliflower nachos. 237-B 20th Street, Miami Beach; Paris, France Paris has no shortage of slinky drinking spots, but the refined Bar Josephine at Mandarin Oriental Lutetia is a favourite for a special treat. It feels quintessentially Parisian, thanks in part to its location in the historic heart of the Left Bank. Past patrons included Picasso, Cocteau and legendary cabaret star Josephine Baker, after whom it is named – and today it continues to attract a glitzy literary crowd. Red drapes behind the stage and black decor make the ambience feel classy and opulent. It's a showcase for local as well as visiting jazz bands and has an impressively busy roster. There are small tables with food service, but you may prefer to perch yourself by the corner of the bar, enjoy a slow mojito or premium mezcal and a quesadilla. It is a classic hotel bar, a windowless ruby red box, with low lighting and deep leather armchairs, that has barely changed since the 1980s. See Maybe Sammy, Sydney You feel instantly at home at Maybe Sammy, which is perhaps what sets it apart from your average bar. Yes, the cocktails here are uber-creative and served with flair, drinks with smoke and bubbles and imaginative blends of high-end ingredients. The food is tasty too. But it's the warmth of the welcome, the easy friendliness of the service, that makes Maybe Sammy Sydney's best. Dublin bar makes list of 10 best cocktail menus in the world

Dublin's Bar 1661 has been included in a list of the top 10 cocktail menus in the world, curated by the 2025 Spirited Awards. Now in its 19th year, the Spirited Awards highlight exceptional creations and creators across the global bar industry, including individuals, establishments, products, media, and leaders who continue to inspire the global cocktail community. The Northside spot, which opened in 2019 and has since garnered praise for its inventive cocktails, won for its 'We Call This Power', a 28-drink celebration of Irish poitín, Irish drinks, and Irish producers. It gets its name from the year poitín was banned in Ireland, and has been fighting the good fight in the name of the traditional Irish spirit for years since. Located on Green St, Rotunda, the menu is presented to guests in a sleek and polished white-covered menu book, with short descriptions of the cocktails, stylish photographs, key tasting notes and some homages to local community heroes such as Joe Duffy of Duffy's Flowers, to whom the non-alcoholic creation Full Bloom is dedicated. Standouts from the selection include the Belfast Coffee, made with Bán poitín, cold brew coffee, cream, demerara and nutmeg, Parts Unknown, made with Bán poitín, Don Julio tequila, grapefruit, pineapple, mulberry, lime and chilli, and Round Towers, made with Glendalough gin, Micil poitín, aquavit, kiwi, lemon sherbet and celery. The team have also devised a specialised, small-group 28-course liquid tasting menu, which sees just 10 guests sitting around a shared table, enjoying mini versions of the cocktails and nibbles. Speaking about the honour, BAR 1661 owner Dave Mulligan said: "We are humbled to say the least. 'We Call This Power' is our statement of intent as a bar, and to see it recognised at this level makes us incredibly proud. This achievement is a huge team effort from all our staff, and a testament to the fantastic work from our design partners Studio FDDP and Photographer Al Higgins. Here's to the spirit of Irish hospitality, bold, rooted, and unapologetically our own." The win comes at a particularly buoyant time for the team as they were named Innovator of the Year at this year's Irish Restaurant Awards on Monday, 19 May. On top of that, the team recently unveiled Bar 1661's sister bar, The Sackville, which they say is on a mission to bring a touch of glamour back to O'Connell Street with its statement black interiors and elevated classic cocktails.
