Police reopen investigation into Wan Ahmad Faris death case
The case dates back to December 2013 when the student was found dead at Maahad Tahfiz Sains Nurul Aman in Kok Lanas, Kelantan.
Saifuddin stated that police face no obstacles in reopening the investigation since the original 2013 case file remains complete.
He revealed this information during his winding up speech for the 13th Malaysia Plan motion in the Dewan Rakyat.
The minister explained that while the 2013 investigation concluded with a 'no further action' directive from the Deputy Public Prosecutor, the police can now review the papers.
Saifuddin confirmed he has discussed the matter with the Criminal Investigation Department director regarding potential barriers to case review.
The police have indicated no problem with reopening the investigation due to the completeness of documentation.
Wan Ahmad Faris, a Form Four student, was found hanging in his dormitory toilet at the religious school.
His body was discovered by the dormitory supervisor after detecting a foul odor from the facility.
Forensic experts initially performed an autopsy and classified the case as sudden death without criminal elements.
However, the Coroner's Court ruled differently in June 2016, finding that his death resulted from actions of an unknown individual.
The family recently submitted a formal request to Bukit Aman police seeking case reinvestigation.
This development follows ongoing family efforts to seek justice for their son's death.
The case has drawn public attention to safety protocols in religious educational institutions.

‘Nation capable of thwarting espionage'
PETALING JAYA: Malaysia possesses strong intelligence capabilities and a comprehensive security framework to counter espionage threats posed by foreign elements, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in Parliament yesterday. He said espionage is a global threat affecting all nations, and Malaysia is no exception. 'We classify espionage as a serious national security issue that must be addressed comprehensively,' he said in response to a question from Lubok Antu MP Roy Angau Gingkoi on preventive and intervention measures taken by the government. Saifuddin Nasution said espionage typically involves stealing sensitive political, military or economic information without authorisation. He said the modus operandi often begins with identifying targets, gathering data for profiling and understanding an organisation's structure. He added that perpetrators may act through insiders or enter Malaysia as tourists. 'Some insiders are recruited with promises of rewards, others coerced through threats and some influenced by ideology.' He highlighted the growing use of cyber espionage, with intruders gaining covert access to information systems via phishing, malware or spyware. He said the stolen data is then transmitted to handlers through the dark web or encrypted channels. Saifuddin Nasution outlined a three-pronged national response to combat such threats – prevention, detection and enforcement. 'Prevention measures include continuous monitoring of watchlists and blacklists as well as the strengthening of security vetting procedures, especially for foreigners working in Malaysia. 'On detection, intelligence agencies are enhancing expertise and coordinating information security programmes to safeguard critical data. 'Cooperation with international bodies such as Interpol and Aseanapol also forms part of Malaysia's strategy.' He cited the 2022 arrest of a Malaysian woman in her 30s who had been recruited by Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. He said her mission was to kidnap two Palestinian men, but police successfully rescued them and detained her. His remarks came amid renewed scrutiny of Malaysia's security measures following the Aug 6 arrest of two Chinese nationals for allegedly trespassing by flying drones into a restricted area of the Defence Ministry headquarters.

Charges the first under new law

He said the amendment involving Sections 507B to 507G of the Penal Code strengthened the legal provisions against acts of bullying. Saifuddin Nasution said since the amendment to Section 507 of the Penal Code was enforced and gazetted on July 11, police had opened 11 investigation papers related to bullying. Advertisement 'These investigation papers fall under Sections 507B, 507C and so on. This shows that the strengthening of the law has enabled the police to take action. 'Now, in the case of Zara, for example, in which the accused were charged on Wednesday, it is under one of the amended sections, making this the first case we have prosecuted (since the amendment),' he said when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) for the Home Ministry in the Dewan Rakyat. He was responding to a supplementary question from Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar), who raised the issue of the police's allegedly slow response in investigating bullying cases, including a recent case in Johor. The Penal Code (Amendment) 2025 Act and the Criminal Procedure Code (Amendment) 2025 Act, aimed at addressing bullying more effectively and comprehensively, including cyberbullying, were passed in the Dewan Rakyat on Dec 10, 2024, and in the Dewan Negara on Dec 16 the same year. Earlier Wednesday, five teenage girls were charged in the Children's Court in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, with using insulting words against Zara Qairina. The charges were framed under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the Code, which carries a penalty of up to one year's imprisonment, or a fine, or both, upon conviction. In line with this legal development, Saifuddin Nasution said the Ministry wanted the police to act swiftly in investigating every reported case of bullying. At the same time, he reminded all parties not to play up sentiments or create inaccurate impressions as though there was an attempt to protect any individual or cover up matters. 'When I reviewed the chronology and sequence of the police investigation, with the large number of witness statements taken in detail, I also felt sad that, with all the police's diligence, simply because of one part where the police were said to have failed, (which was) to conduct a post-mortem. Aug 4 was the first time the police submitted the investigation papers to the AG (Attorney General), and on Aug 3, Zara's mother had lodged a police report after noticing bruises while bathing Zara's body. So at the same time, in the investigation papers submitted to the AG, we recommended that Zara's grave be exhumed,' he said.
