Govt. distributes 2 crore saplings in tribal regions to curb ganja cultivation

The Hindu11-07-2025
In a step to curb ganja cultivation in the tribal regions, Minister for Tribal Affairs Gummadi Sandhya Rani announced that the government will distribute nearly two crore horticulture plants to farmers in the Agency areas in Alluri Sitharama Raju district. The announcement was made during 'Chaitanyam 2025,' an awareness meet organised in Paderu
The Minister said that the NDA government is committed to eradicating ganja from the State. As an alternative to ganja, tribal farmers will receive fruit-bearing plants such as silver oak, sapota, mango, guava, jamun, lemon, jackfruit, and custard apple.
The Minister said: 'Almost 90% of ganja cultivation has already been eradicated in the district.' She highlighted how tribal-grown coffee has achieved international recognition and revealed that plans are underway to expand coffee plantations to one lakh acres.
She further said that the government is making efforts to improve road infrastructure in remote tribal regions, with ₹1,000 crore earmarked for road construction over the next few years
Home Minister V Anitha expressed concerns over tribal youth being exploited by ganja smugglers and middlemen. She said: 'Of the 900 ganja smugglers currently in Visakhapatnam Central Jail, nearly 700 are tribal youth misled by middlemen to illegally cultivate ganja.' The Home Minister also said that assets worth ₹3.73 crore have been seized from those involved in ganja-related crimes.
District Collector A.S. Dinesh Kumar shared that fruit saplings are being planted across 35,000 acres through the NREGS scheme, with a budget of ₹54 crore. He said that, following Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's directives, coffee cultivation will be scaled up significantly in the next three to four years.
District SP Amit Bardar said that around 93 acres of ganja crops have been identified and destroyed using drone surveillance. He stated that 325 families previously engaged in ganja farming are now being supported with alternate livelihoods. Awareness programs have been organised in over 1,600 villages to educate people on the dangers and legal consequences of ganja cultivation.
Eagle IG Ravi Krishna urged citizens to report illegal activities through the toll-free number 1972, assuring confidentiality for informants.
During the programme, the dignitaries distributed saplings and ragi seeds to farmers. Officials also launched the 'Swachha Sankalpam' poster.

New Andhra Pradesh BJP chief APN Madhav charts roadmap for growth

With the formation of the NDA government in the state and TDP being a crucial partner at the centre, the BJP had been playing a secondary role in Andhra Pradesh. However, with the new state president APN Madhav, the party has started looking to expand its support base in the southern states. After taking over as state BJP president, Madhav has been constantly touring the state. In July, he went on a statewide yatra starting from Kadapa, appealing to party workers to highlight the achievements of the Modi government, especially people-centric schemes. In July, the party organized a massive Shobha Yatra in Puttaparthi aimed at spreading spiritual ethos among workers and the state populace. While in the Rayalaseema region, he addressed farmers' concerns and said he would put pressure on the state government to expedite the Handri-Neeva irrigation project 's completion. Two weeks ago in Guntur, Madhav said that landmarks with colonial names should be changed and demanded renaming the Jinnah Tower in Guntur. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? Double standards of Centre and State govt. exposed one more time, alleges KTR

HYDERABAD Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K.T. Rama Rao has ridiculed the double standards of the NDA government and the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA), stating that they are not acting on the sinking of the coffer dam of the Polavaram project for the second time. In a statement, Mr. Rao said on Saturday that the NDSA had not taken up investigation into the washing away of the Polavaram cofferdam in 2020 that happened for the first time, even after being asked to go into the matter. The NDA government gave national project status to Polavaram and funded its construction - but is not looking into the quality aspects of construction, he said. During the run-up to the last Assembly elections in Telangana, a few piers of the Medigadda Barrage of Kaleshwaram project sank and damaged the structure under suspicious circumstances, but neither the BJP leaders nor those of the Congress, who had been indulging in mudslinging on Kaleshwaram project continuously, and terming it as 'kuleshwaram' (a collapsed project) repeatedly - had raised an issue on Polavaram, Mr. Rao said. He sought to know if the BJP and the Congress have the guts to term Polavaram as 'kulavaram' since its coffer dam was washed away once and sunk for the second time. In the second instance, it sunk for 10 meters width and about 8 meters deep, and the Andhra Pradesh government had taken up repairs on a war-footing silently, he said. On the other hand, the 'foolishness' of the Congress government is preventing it from taking up repairs on Medigadda Barrage and in giving water to the large ayacut depending on waters lifted from the point, even 20 months after coming to power, he said. Further, the NDSA proved its double standards by not taking up investigation into the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel collapse in February that buried eight workers, technicians and engineers alive. It is also indicative of the Congress-BJP conspiracy against Kaleshwaram, he alleged.

He said that India will become 'the world's greatest power' by 2047 if citizens do their bit by supporting Swadeshi goods and doing their duties. 'If every citizen fulfils their duties, this goal will be achieved sooner, and India will emerge as the world's greatest power by 2047,' he said. Highlighting UP's role in the country's growth, he reminded citizens that Independence does not mean 'arrogance or unrestrained freedom'. Yogi Adityanath then urged every resident of the state to carry out their responsibilities to the state with utmost sincerity. 'India has become the world's fourth largest economy' Yogi Adityanath then highlighted India's achievements under the BJP-led NDA government, which came to power in 2014 and is now in its third term. He said that the country has emerged as the fourth-largest economy in the world in the past 11 years. देश की स्वतंत्रता अनगिनत त्याग और बलिदान का परिणाम है...आप सभी को 79वें स्वतंत्रता दिवस की हार्दिक बधाई! 'In 2014, India was the world's 11th largest economy, and it has now become the 4th largest economy,' added the CM. Shifting his attention to Operation Sindoor, a military strike carried out by India on Pakistan after the Pahalgam terrorist attack in May, Yogi Adityanath said that it highlighted the strength of Made in India weapons. 'BrahMos missiles and Made in India drones manufactured in Lucknow have established India's capabilities globally,' said Yogi Adityanath. He also lauded the valour shown by the Indian Army and thanked soldiers for courageously defending the borders. Yogi Adityanath urges people to support the swadeshi goods The CM went to urge people to use 'swadeshi' goods in all walks of life to make the economy stronger.
