Jo Whiley reveals music icons who left her feeling 'tiny and stupid'

Metro9 hours ago
Not all celebrity interactions leave you with a warm fuzzy feeling – as Jo Whiley knows only too well after one 'really unpleasant experience'.
The radio presenter revealed how, when she once interviewed Eminem and Dr Dre, she left with her confidence in pieces.
Speaking about being starstruck on her Dig It podcast with Zoe Ball, the Radio 2 star, 60, shared details of the 'horrible' interview.
'I remember interviewing Eminem and Dr Dre one time and that was horrible,' she began.
'I'd interviewed Eminem when he was very young and he was very shy and polite. He kept calling me 'ma'am' all the time and he was really, really sweet and humble.'
However, once fame had hit around the beginning of the 00s, Marshall Mathers became less timid and seemingly less pleasant.
Jo shared: 'A couple of years later he came back on the show but with Dr Dre and the fame had happened and he was just this other creature altogether.
'They were just so playful with me – and can I just say they made me feel so tiny and so stupid.'
The interaction 'stands out' among all Jo's other interviews as she 'did not enjoy that' but admitted outside of music she does sometimes get starstruck.
Monty Don, broadcaster and horticulturalist, sprang to mind as someone she was keen to impress as well as Dame Mary Berry and Will Ferrell.
'You can have a normal conversation with Paul Weller but can you speak to Mary Berry without tripping over your words? No you cannot,' she laughed.
Jo has previously opened up about struggling with anxiety during her career, particularly in the 90s when she was DJing.
Speaking to Woman's Health, she shared: 'I remember doing one gig and I was just so scared, I thought I can't go on like this. This is ridiculous.
'It's ruining my life because I'm just such a ball of anxiety. More Trending
'But then I realised how happy it was making people when I do these gigs and that was a game changer.'
She called it a 'ludicrous' time to be a woman as 'objectification and judgement of women and their bodies' was rife.
'I just kept my head down and weathered the storm,' Jo added.
Metro has reached out to Dr Dre and Eminem's reps for comment.

Ross tells a huge lie in Emmerdale that could destroy everything

Ross Barton (Michael Parr) has reunited with Steph Miligan (Georgia Jay) in Emmerdale, but he's potentially made a massive mistake already. And it's only been about five minutes! Lewis Barton (Bradley Riches) decided to work his magic and help get Ross and Steph back together. Steph ended her relationship with Ross shortly after she learnt about her connection with Anthony Fox. Something like that can really put a dampener on a fledgling relationship, and for her and Ross it was too much. Steph was distraught to learn of what happened to her mother and became fixated on her looks, claiming that every glance in a mirror she saw Anthony looking back at her. After several failed attempts at plastic surgery, Steph finally broke down and despite all his support, dumped Ross to focus on herself. She told him she couldn't be the person he needed, and she was setting him free. In tonight's episode, Steph and Ross were in The Hide enjoying breakfast after spending the evening together. As they chatted, Steph wondered if Ross had been with anyone during the period they weren't a couple. In that moment, Ross lied to Steph and said he hadn't slept with anyone else. He claimed that he was a 'one woman man' but obviously it would've been far better to actually tell Steph the truth. More Trending Shortly after Steph dumped Ross, he hung out with Manpreet Sharma (Rebecca Sarker). Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? They were both lonely and ended up having sex, but Ross made it clear to Manpreet afterwards that he had no intention of carrying on with their fling. This week, Manpreet will be questioned by a curious Lewis and Ruby Miligan (Beth Cordingly) about her love life. If she tells them about Ross in that moment, Ruby certainly won't hesitate in telling Steph. Drag queens being loaded into police cars after rally sets 'terrible precedent'

A story time event for children – featuring 'sing-alongs and dancing' and led by two drag performers – was held at a library in Belfast. This – of all things – is what drew a crowd of protesters on the steps of the Holywood Arches Library on Friday, leading to the queens being escorted away in police cars. Footage circulating on social media shows the rally, with a woman behind the camera heard shouting, 'Shame on both of you, leave the kids alone, seriously.' As tensions escalated, the ticketed event was abandoned and Lady Portia Di'Monte, also known as the 'North Ireland's First Lady of Drag', and Miss Dora Belle were taken away 'to ensure that there would be no breach of the peace.' Lady Portia had read storybooks to the children, including family favourites such as Dear Zoo, while Miss Dora Belle narrated them using British Sign Language (BSL). Drag artist Crystal argued that there is a 'real, clear misunderstanding' and that cancelling such events because of 'fringe protesters' sets a 'terrible' precedent. The RuPaul's Drag Race star told Metro: 'Watching two drag queens getting escorted out by the police is very depressing. 'It sets a terrible precedent that fringe protesters with believes that do not represent the whole of society or even the majority of society are able to – if they are loud enough – get events cancelled and make people unsafe on. Simply click on this link, select 'Join Chat' and you're in! Don't forget to turn on notifications! 'It is very troubling and we need to push back against this kind of narrative.' Crystal described protests against children's event led by drag queens as 'recycled transphobia' and compared it to mid-20th century rallies against women wearing trousers. Setting out to break down some preconceptions people may have about storytelling, they explained that -like any art form – drag has a 'million varieties', with just a portion of it adult-themed. They said: 'It is a gross mischaracterization to say that drag is inherently sexual and always inappropriate for children. That is just not true. 'And most people in the UK are aware of that because they have taken their children to see panto and they have seen drag queens entertaining children in the past and they understand that it is very possible to have that art form in a family-friendly way. 'People who say that sound like the people who probably would have been arguing 100 to 150 years ago that women should not be allowed to wear trousers because it is 'dangerous and inherently sexual'. 'If we look back, it sounds completely ridiculous. It is the same rhetoric, just recycled. 'Unfortunately, this kind of language has become more tolerated in recent years.' Families take their kids to age appropriate arts event shocker! Time for some people to reflect on the damage they are continuing to cause to the LGBT+ community in Northern Ireland. Drag is part of British, and Irish, and international culture. There are no legitimate concerns. — Amanda Ferguson (@AmandaFBelfast) August 5, 2025 Crystal, who has also performed at similar events, described them as 'any storytelling event that you would have for children, just that the books have a broader theme of inclusivity, self-love, and acceptance.' They added: 'Children sit around, open up their storybooks and you read to them. You might do some interactive games, ask them questions, things like that, but it is very kid-focused and it is very safe. 'It is nothing that you would not see in any school done by an 'normal' teacher.' More Trending Yet, this was not everyone's opinion. The DUP's Gordon Lyons said the event, hosted by the EastSide Partnership, 'was not appropriate for children' and had 'compromised the perception of our public libraries as a welcoming and inclusive space for all'. He added: 'I have directed my officials to liaise with Libraries NI to ensure that policy is faithfully implemented.' The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that two people were escorted away from the library, but that at this stage, no offences were determined to have taken place. Everything a Fashion Editor is buying now in Aligne's sale for next season

Metro journalists select and curate the products that feature on our site. If you make a purchase via links on this page we will earn commission – learn more ALIGNE rarely launches a sale, but when it does it's not to be missed. And that time is now. The fashion brand's sale is well underway, and some items have already sold out due to popular demand, though that's not all that surprising. We have long been a fan of ALIGN, and its bestselling waistcoats, though there are other stylish pieces we adore from the brand too. Thankfully, some of those staples we have had our eyes on for a few months have been reduced. From denim mini dresses and maxi designs, to the iconic Leo Denim Pinstripe Waistcoat, cotton midi skirts to trench coats, ALIGNE's sale includes stunning garments to wear now, as well as next season. So, without further ado, these are all the items on our wishlist (or rather online basket ready to checkout), and tips on how to style them for autumn to get your cost per wear. One thing before we go – it's unknown how long the sale will run for, so if you spy something you like that is discounted, we encourage you not to dawdle. Sizes are limited, but we like the louche look anyway. Pair with denim jeans, a simple white tee and a fine knit cardigan when autumn breeze hits. BUY NOW FOR £124.49 (WAS £249) A denim mini dress is a throw on style we often rely on when we want a chic but fuss-free outfit that packs a punch. Go bare legs with pumps in the spring and summer, or slip on a pair of black tights or knee high boots for autumn. Slip on a jumper on top and this dress could easily be mistaken for a mini skirt. BUY NOW FOR £49.49 (WAS £99) A flowy midi skirt has been our favourite alternative to jeans and shorts when the warm weather hits and for city breaks, but that's not stopping us wearing it come autumn. Just layer a knitted cardigan, jumper or sweatshirt, maybe even a trench coat or bar coat for extra warmth and trainers. It's giving scandi. BUY NOW FOR £84.99 (WAS £99) It's giving Ganni, but for a fraction of the price, especially now it's on sale. We love animal print, and no, a full dress is not too much – or giving Kat Slater vibes, trust us. We'd pair with a black roll neck underneath, tights and 70s heeled boots come autumn/winter. BUY NOW FOR £59.49 (WAS £119) There are not enough words to emphasise our love for a white shirt, and yes you need this one too. Structured shirts are back in a big way, especially designs that taper in at the waist, which is a stark contrast to our usual oversized boxy variations. Team with denim jeans for a classic, yet polished office look. BUY NOW FOR £49.49 (WAS £99) Whether you opt for a double denim ensemble, or simply want an extra layer to keep you warm and dry when the weather turns, this gets our seal of approval. You can layer fine knits underneath, even a chunky roll neck, or a T-shirt. BUY NOW FOR £59.49 (WAS £119) If an animal print dress is too intense, then opt for these jeans to ease your way into the trend. Pair with a white tank or t-shirt for now, then layer with knitwear or a blazer for autumn. BUY NOW FOR £49.49 (WAS £99) A boxy blazer never goes out of style, and considering winter whites are a huge hit every winter, this makes for quite the versatile, and seasonal, staple. BUY NOW FOR £84.49 (WAS £165) Barrel jeans have been a hugely popular trend of late, and this style is not going anywhere any time soon. The balloon cut curves around the thighs, knees and calves before tapering in at the ankles. Team with a classic white tee, cotton shirt, jumper or blazer, swap summer flats for trainers or closed toe heeled boots. BUY NOW FOR £49.49 (WAS £99) Would it be an autumn wardrobe without knitwear? This chunky knit is cosy yet smart to wear for the office, and weekend walks followed by a roast dinner. BUY NOW FOR £59.49 (WAS £119) A scoop neck blazer with a tailored waist has also become a popular staple, and alternative to the masculine styles we typically wear. If you have a date night in the diary, this blazer with a pair of jeans and heels is ultra sophisticated. BUY NOW FOR £89.49 (WAS £175) British weather can switch between extremes, so if you're looking ahead to next season a smart coat that will save you from the elements. Plus, it's a timeless style you can rely on year after year.
